The DOMINANT Eye & HOW TO SIGHT!

After nearly a year of test and trials, I’ve finally learnt how to pot almost every shot successfully by just following this simple 3-step method: 1. Lining up - This is the most critical part of every shot. 90% of shot accuracy lies in lining up the shot correctly. For this, stand behind the cue ball and align yourself correctly by visualizing where you need to hit the object ball, to pocket the object ball. 2. Feathering - Never spend too much time feathering, you’ll eventually miss the shot as your brain processes too much unnecessary info which will result in a complete miss to a simple shot. Instead, feathering is to only ensure you are cueing straight and have the cue ball and object ball aligned the way you wanted when you lined up initially. 3. Back Swing Pause, Sighting and Delivery - This is the most important phase of every shot. Any minuet miss on this will result in a complete miss. After you’ve feathered 2-3 times and are confident that you’ve aligned correctly (i.e with the cue ball, object ball and straight cueing): a) Stop your cue tip at the cue ball for a second b) Then pull your cue back (as part of your back swing) and wait for at least a second. Never rush into delivery as it is an incorrect and inconsistent method. c) At this point (i.e at your backswing) your eyesight should be only on the object ball and nothing else d) Finally, complete your shot with your eyes on the object ball and ensure you’ve delivered the cue straight! Hope these tips help. It’s not coming from an expert for sure, but I’ve tried and tested everything, and realized the above helped me to a great extent.

It's different for everybody but there are some common themes for me. Every shot is an experiment with a hypothesis, test and a conclusion. Eg. 1. When I line up as a right handed - left eyed player, it's important for me to get my dominant eye on the line of the shot just as Steve describes by turning my head slightly to put my left eye on the line of the shot. I'm standing with the line central to my body, with a foot either side. 1.5 - Getting down on the shot is THE most important thing for me. If 98% of my aiming is done at 1, then getting down on the shot if done without care, can lose 50% of my aim. I get my cue on line early up on the shot and point it at the line, and I have to step slightly sideways to put my right foot on the line, keeping my dominant eye and my cue together as I lower the cue already quite parallel down onto the line as I lean forwards, visualising the line and path of the object ball to the pocket as I go down. This is where the last 2% of aiming is done, as I slide into the address position. This also has to be carefully done to keep exactly on line I chose. 2. I don't feather so much, so the pause at the cue ball is mostly all I do (except for tricky shots that need a bit of a rehearsal). This pause time I spend checking if everything went as planned, and if the cue is parallel and straight, if it's on the white correctly, and if the line looks right now completely down on the shot. If I have to compensate here, it is only for micro adjusting on the parallel axis, which might pull the cue tip off position on the white. There is no aiming done here, just micro-aligning to find the point on the white. The last thing I'm looking at is the white to check where I'm hitting the ball. 3. Then I do a slow backswing, paying attention to just pulling the cue back in line. The pause on the backswing is for checking that I did that, and the cue is still aligned. At this point I am looking at the object ball and the path of the white to it (the line I chose), this is the point of aim. Then I look back to the white. 4. Shoot - whilst looking at the white, I think that I get a better timed shot, and I can concentrate on the point of impact and acceleration into the cue ball. Ronnie is a white shooter and does this. 5. Observation and conclusions: Look up at the object ball immediately after impact of cue and cue ball, decelerate cue, keep head still and down, observe what happens. After ball hits or misses, check the end of the cue is still on line, or if I have twisted, or shot across the ball. The I make conclusions, and get up off the shot. I think the big advantage is if you are right handed, right eyed - all the good players who progress quickly I know are. They can just step down into the shot, as they already have the eye and foot lined up and just keep them this way. We left eyed, right handed players have to learn how to move our feet and body slightly across the shot, whilst still keeping the left eye on the line of the shot, and this adds a difficult stage to master, which I believe makes progress at learning the game slower.

@@welshfreedom1451 Relax :) - everybody has a story and a different way of doing it, but there are similarities. Steve is a good coach and his way is therefore the most consistently reliable for teaching, but it's not the only way to play snooker and even top profs have slightly different approaches. I have had coaching from Alan Bell (a top coach / Jimmy White / Stuart Bingham etc.) his way is very different to Steve's, and even some elements of his advice is not something I use - same with Steve's coaching. You have to be flexible in your method to find what works for your game, and sharing views is educational and personally I enjoy hearing what other amateur players do and what works for them. Sometimes I might get an idea from people here who spend the time to share their method. It's all good - just don't read it if you don't like or need it.

I knew something was wrong with my aiming and started to think about dominant eyes. I noticed yesterday that if I played a shot with my right eye open I would pot it, but playing the same shot with my left eye open I would miss it by a ball width every time. Did some googling on snooker dominant eyes and was very glad the first search result lead me to one of your videos as I already trust you as the best online coach. Right handed left eye dominant. I actually figured this out organically at the club a few weeks back. I am taught (25yrs or so ago) to place my right foot on the sighting line of the shot as I was walking in. It worked well but a few weeks ago I started refreshing my stance, cue action, delivery etc etc....without knowing about the dominant eye thing or ever checking I naturally wanted to try and stand slightly to the right of the sighting line....shots started going in more consistently. Its not something that's natural yet because I've done it the old way for so long. I get down on the shot and a lot of the time will have to reset and move to my right a few inches (2-6") get down and play the shot. I have obviously since come across this video, done the test and found out I'm left eye dominant. So a right handed player but left eye dominant would mean that what I was doing naturally (stepping slightly to the right of the sighting line) was correct. I am now working on making this my natural setup so I sight the shot as I used to but walk in with the right foot just to the right of the line. It's quite surprising how much of a difference this can make to how consistent your potting is! Great little video here and a wonderful channel overall. Giving free invaluable coaching. If any of you are within an hour of this guy I would get some coaching with him for sure. We don't have many coaches here in South Wales. We used to have Terry Griffiths in the local matchroom but he doesn't really coach anymore. If this Chap was closer to me I would absolutely love to have a good few sessions.

I was looking for something tonight, after our last game, team won i won also but felt like i wasnt sighting it right, i’m exactly like you left eye right right handed, when my right foot is on line i have to bring my left eye over wasnt working,so it was doing my head in, so i lined up with everything in the middle of my feet but left eye on line of aim and done what you did kept my right foot slightly out to the right stepping forward and hey presto felt so comfortable they strted going in short long mid,so i done a little vid all down the line of aim to remind me not to forget in the next praccy session,glad you posted i was looking for someone to say that, right foot doesnt need to be on line of aim just off to the right for us left dom eye right handed players 👍

Hello Steve - The video is quite useful especially for those who believe that they need to always lie down on the shot under their dominant eye. That said, this video made me think of a couple of issues. First, I think when a player is left eye dominant and is right-handed or vice-versa, i.e. when a player cues with the opposite arm relative to his dominant eye, there's a higher chance of cueing across the ball simply because of his approach to the ball (which seems to cut across the line of aim). Second, and this is something that I don't see addressed anywhere, is that on specific shots this sighting problem becomes very complicated, especially when one is lining up a shot from the cushion at a 45 degree angle relative to the table (imagine you're close to the cushion next to green and you are aiming for a red to the far right of the pink. I wonder how this test you make on this video would fare if you were to play a shot like that when elevation and perspective come into play. Especially for a player like myself who's left eye dominant and right-handed, these shots are super hard not in terms of potting necessarily, but with respect to actually finding the right line of aim. I look at the shot from a distance and feel like I have figured out the correct line of aim, but when I line up and play the shot, I consistently hit the wrong point on the object ball even though everything seemed fine right before I played the shot. I'm aware that such shots are super difficult to begin with, but I guess their difficulty stems precisely because of the complications that arise due to changing elevation and perspective. I wonder whether you would be willing to address that in the future. Anyway, thanks for the content, as always.

Most of the right handed right eye dominant people, when they play snooker for many years, they will change their dominant eye to left, but still use right eye dominant for gun shoting. That is because our brain wants us to use left eye on snooker aiming, it is because our left body and left head are in front.

The way I learned how to test which eye is dominant, is to sight an object exactly as you did, and then draw your hands back towards your face, keeping the object in the "hole". When your hands reach your face, you will have your dominant eye looking through the hole, and your "non dominant" eye covered. Either way, you will get the same result.

I'm seriously left eye dominant - right handed. I have learned to cue straight - that's really important. I stand square to the shot with the line centre, but as I go down on the shot I have to angle and tilt my right eye forward and tilt my head up slightly so that when down on the shot the line lands slightly left on my chin - about 0.5cm. My brain compensates for my left eye dominance apparently - but not all of it. The rest I get by tilting the dominant eye slightly back. The tilt is important - if I don't tilt they don't go in.

How the head comes down onto the line of aim because the actual line of aim is found from a standing position. So the whole head must come down on that line and that's where different chin positions come from it is a result of maintaining the line of aim as you bend and bring the head down onto the cue not from a dominant eye as both eyes are used to bring the head down properly on the line of aim.

The head position is a valid point to talk about. I'm right-handed, right eye dominant, however I place the cue more to my left side, more like under my left nostril, it seems more in line. I've tried to land over the cue with my right eye before, but it's off line when I do the head movement test over the cue.

My Interpretation of this is maintaining discipline of your overall positioning and not letting your eye dictate your stance. It's very easy when in the flow, one shot after another just from excitement and the adrenaline to let slip. This is why you will see for example, a Pro Player walk into to a shot only to then take a step back.

Thank you for this video. I watched Dr. Dave on this same topic, but his advice to “move your head further over the cue” just did not work for me (pool player not a snooker player). I was constantly seeing the ball straight, but the object ball constantly went too far left. When I hit the object ball with low spin against the aim spot (middle diamond with a golf tee on the rail) on the far rail it would return with spin on the right. If I used a striped ball it looked like it had no spin going down the table, but as soon as it hit the rail it would squirt off to the right on the return. I spent many hours over several weeks trying to fix this problem - it was getting into my head and ruining the rest of my game. Your solution of cocking my hips immediately corrected my problem. I shot a number of shots down to the aiming point on the diamond and the ball came straight back and hit my cue tip dead on. I then played a couple of hours of eight ball and my game is definitely much better. Great video; can’t wait to see more on this subject - would love to see one about wearing glasses (single focal point vs. no line bi-focals as an example). A lot of us older folks (I’m 76) have presbyopia.

I wear varifocals in normal everyday life but have single vision snooker glasses. The varifocals simply don't work for cue sports as the differing stages in the lenses cannot be used from the same position, your head needs to move to look at the cue ball and then the object ball, you cannot simply flick your eyes from one to the other. Ask your optician to find you a prescription that gives you the best single vision over the distance needed for your chosen cue sport.

I’ve just learned the appropriate stance (for me) where I can just flick my eyes up and dow and experience a good clarity without moving my head. My neck hurts after awhile, but it’s worth it. This past week of practice has brought me much closer to my idea of where I should be, where before I had several months of frustration. I also have to that watching Han Yu (female Chinese player) play has helped sharpen parts of my game - so much draw on such a short controlled stoke amazes me.

Probably the best description i have ever heard on the subject...My eyesight has gone n need the lens replacement thing now its messed a lot up for me and the glasses make the balls look like cannon balls ... i just guess now...and have lost a lot of timing and technique because the sighting thing has messed up the PSR I once had. I still make a few fifties every week...it is sad though because i was better than this but I suppose age comes to us all but if i ever get this eyesight thing sorted i would love to have a tune up with a coach this knowledgable ..cudos to him

Great video Steve!!! I am not much of a snooker player... pool is my game. I was wondering how you adjust sighting for side spin? I have been doing just as you have demonstrated in your video for years and it works for center (vertical cue ball aiming), however when i use side spin I have to place the cue in a line parallel to the sight line and it changes my chin positioning on the cue. So I am actually not sighting with the cue at all, but instead sighting with the cue ball and dropping my chin down to the cue while sighting through the cue ball. For example, I am left eye dominant and using center cueing my vision center is slightly to the left and my chin rests just slightly to left side on the cue when I am cueing center cue ball. However, when I using right side spin and drop into the shot (sighting using the cue ball) my chin ends up on the right side. If i aim with right side spin and drop with my chin to slightly left center (using right side spin) I most certainly miss the shot every time. Sorry if this is confusing but I am very curious what your thoughts are on the subject and how you approach side spin sighting and aiming. Cheers!

For way too long I've been inadvertently placing a little bit of right side (I'm right handed and left eye dominant) on most shots that were meant to be cued straight. Hello Steve, I'm Right-handed and Right dominant eye I used my right eye for years but I always had a feeling something is not right! recently I'm playing with my left eye it was a little bit hard in the beginning but after few days of practice with my left eye even I'm right eye player, I had a massive improvement on my cue action and vision even! Also, I had a new break record with my new vision! (finally, I did a +100 break) I think The Dominant eye is not a good theory. Also, you explained perfectly that how we can find the correct head position. (I did exactly the same thing and I realized the cue should be under my left eye !) thank you for your great content.

@@alifaizan4430 for me cue is a little bit to the left of the center, i suggest forget dominant eye theory and try to find a cue position for your self when you approach the shots on table. in my opinion dominant eye is only useful when you are standing behind the shot, after that you should not use the dominant eye usually

it's important to understand how hand/eye co-ordination works in the human male for whom it evolved for hunting with weapons. Humans have binocular vision, two eyes giving the brain two images, both slightly different, with which to form a 3D picture of height, width and depth, but there can only be one straight line to any given target, so the brain chooses just one eye for this purpose. There is only one line of aim in cue sports but with binocular vision you see two cues so the brain will choose one eye to see only one cue and put that cue on the line of aim. Finding the line of aim is done 90% when stood up behind the shot with the dominant eye and that's the eye that in most males is opposite to the dominant hand. This is because when hand/eye co-ordination was evolving the weapons used were throwing weapons and the body turns to the opposite side of the dominant hand in order to throw hard and fast with greater distance while looking at the target with the head turned to the same side as the dominant hand. So right handed left eye dominant is the norm and vice versa for left handers. You may be right handed with a dominant right eye and actually use this eye to find the line of aim when stood behind the shot but on many people once down in the stance the left eye will naturally take over as the sighting eye. This dominant eye theory is not a theory, it's a fact but not everyone uses their dominant eye as the sighting eye in cue sports, it changes from standing up to being down in some, don't overide it to get cue centre chin, just look and see and your natural hand/eye co-ordination will take over.

I’m right eye dominant and shoot Left handed. I’ve noticed that I look at different things at the time of impact depending on the type of shot. Sometimes I’m looking at the cue ball at impact. I typically look at the cue ball when trying to do more with the cue ball and precision is more important. Other times, especially long shots, I tend to look at the object ball. Funny thing is, I never thought about where I was looking at the time of impact until I watched a video about it. Most players shouldn’t even worry about where they look unless they are having issues potting balls. Our brains compensate a lot when receiving the vision message. When looking straight forward your nose is always visible, but you never see it because your brain filters it out because you have no need to see your nose.

Hi Steve great video. I play snooker as a hobby at my local snooker club. 2 years ago I had retina detachment and get very blurred vision in right eye. My left eye is good tho. But when I done that test your doing in the video. It’s showing my right eye is the dominant one. I thought my left eye would be due to better vision.

I think eye dominance is actually how your brain processes the signals from your eyes, more than just being directly related to the quality of the image your eye creates. I developed short-sightedness as a 11/12 year old. Initially it wasn't picked up, and I went a couple years before getting glasses. As a result my brain developed to use my left eye for distant objects, and my right for very close ones. Now that my vision is corrected, my brain still does what it learnt back then and I see thru a single eye constantly, despite both being open.

I have 20/20 vision in both eyes. I am right handed. I shoot a rifle and pull the trigger with my right index finger. I practice right eye dominance. Good video.

Very difficult to do unfortunately as I would have to move the camera perfectly behind the line of aim for every single shot. So for every pot I did, wherever the white landed, I'd then need to move the camera perfectly behind the potting line of the next ball, then go back and play that shot, and then repeat the process for every single shot. So it would probably take me a week to do a line-up! I'll do something similar in the future though I'm sure. Just maybe not an entire line-up 👍

Nice Video, I`ve been try something different.... I`m left handed, & right eye dominant, I have always stood middle of the body behind the shot, with my feet touching ( when sighting ) .....not walking forwards into the shot, but judging distance away from table when sighting, once I find the line of aim, I shift my non cue side (Right) leg away to where its comfortable,.... then my cue side (Left) heel (not the whole foot ) pivots a small amount inwards to where the middle of body was when sighting, == meaning cue side heel is bang on the line of shot. thoughts ??

So i’m 100% left eye right handed,2 years ago i had my best season in ameture league 4th overall, won a comp and won 4 inclub comps on the trot and got to final in the 5th, i found a way that worked for me, by placing my left eye on the line of aim and i would slightly step in and bring my right foot on the line too with a bridge of 10-11 inches , it worked i was becoming hard to beat.Start of last year i went to a coach to up my game a little further,he told me to stop doing this and put my right foot on the line of aim and move it forward to step into the shot , so now my left eye was’nt on the line of aim,was told to shorten my bridge too.This year ive had my worst year, rubbish in the local league,not won 1 inclub knocked out of every comp,i feel theres to much going on in my head now,so after being knocked out of the last comp yesterday, ive gone back to the club and started lining my shots up like i did 2 years ago a bit like Neil Robertson as you see him step in, everyones different in their approach as long as they have the line, seasons done now, i’ll be going back to pactice my old routine of lining up the shot in the coming weeks ready for the next league starting. Do you have any thoughts/advice on this Steve, anything would be appreciated 👍

Very useful for me as I don’t have binocular vision. My dominant right eye can’t look at the ball at the same time as my weaker left. Is this why I miss so many easy pots!?😂

This is just what i needed. I have a lazy eye but putting my cue right under my strong eye doesn't fix anything. Its like my eyes are playing a trick on me on every single shot. I don't know how I managed to kept playing all these years its extremely frustrating. I say to myself I'm gonna quit every time after a session. I'm either hitting the cue ball with left hand side or I over cut the object ball to the left side. Its unbelievable how I managed to pot some of the balls with this fucking eye. Well I'm gonna give this a try I really love this game, imagine if I could just pot balls like a normal person.

Really interesting video to me this as at the moment im obsessed with the line of shot. Youre spot on for me...central line because im right handed and left eye dom. This works for me but I dont get why because central line walk in is not putting the left eye over the shot...so why does it work? Also when youre down on the shot are you moving the head just until it doesnt look wrong..because I find when it looks right my cues off the baulk line?

I'm the same as you - left dominant. For me, my brain compensates for the dominance and provides a balanced 3D picture using a bit of dom eye and more of the right eye. I find that tilting my weak eye forward and head up is also important when down on the shot - as it does the same thing.

@@sj460162 to be honest with you - I pretty much ignore how it looks down on the shot these days. I can personally have many opinions on if I'm straight or not depending on how I move my attention around the scene, focus on the object ball gives me one look, on both balls gives me another, on the cue ball alone another. You can always see the other ball in your peripheral vision and it can make you uncertain. I started lining up up on the shot, committing totally to the line, and paying very close attention to how I go down on it - after that I can in principle close my eyes and still pot the ball if I picked the correct line and cue straight. Watching the ball travel to the pocket and staying very still though is the most important part to keep learning the angles.

@@sj460162 besides the white ball position, it is actually what I pay most attention to when I'm playing snooker at my best - after all it's the goal to send the ball along that line and into the pocket. It's kinda like music - you can play it and you can practice it. When you practice, you are breaking it down and thinking deeply about certain aspects of it one at a time, that doesn't sound good - but when you play, you have to forget about the details and get it all to to flow dynamically and sound like music. If you practice snooker too much, then you might find you are doing it when you play - and for me, that tends to mean I start missing balls. So the main thing I focus my attention on when playing (after the pre-shot planning), is the path that the object ball has to take when it travels into the pocket, the rest is happening automatically. This way you can connect your plan 'is this the right way to pot the ball' in pre shot, with a result 'yes it is' or 'no it's not' after you played the shot. Then you are learning from every shot you take, instead of concentrating on your mistakes in stance, sighting, cueing, etc. etc. etc..

It's honestly down to the player to be honest. It doesn't really matter that much. A lot of which tip a player uses is down to how they like it to feel. The feedback they get when playing shots. Do you want it to feel absolutely solid with no give at all, or do you want to get a bit more vibration through the shaft of the cue 'feel' the shot a bit more. I'd just try a few and see what you prefer. There are so many to pick from these days it's mad really. I use an Elkmaster Pro Soft. Cheers, Steve 🙂
