something i think needs to be made clear before visiting is that if you dont know how to swim, dont go in the water! many foreigners go into the ocean when they dont know how to swim, and its really dangerous. knowing how to swim is a must if you wanna go in, lifeguards on busy beaches are always run off their feet bringing foreigners who cant swim back to the shore

True dat. I saw it every cuppla years as a kid on my Apollo Bay hols. The poor buggars would get dragged in the undertow, then caught in the rip, freak out, swim against it, get exhausted, and drown. Whereas the Aussies would magic carpet ride the rip out to the good waves, then right angle out of it.

@happycamper8974 жыл бұрын
Google it... the hole in the ozone layer does NOT extend over Australia.
@overworlder4 жыл бұрын
UV is stronger in Australia partly because of ozone depletion, also because the Earth’s tilt and orbit puts the southern hemisphere closer to the sun in summer than the northern hemisphere, and because the atmosphere is dry, the generally low humidity and lack of water vapor haze allows more UV to pass through.

More recently (past 7 or so years) the cameras have advanced in technology & have become extremely accurate. So I believe it’s only a margin of 1km.

Nobody eats prawns tho right..? ...Insects of the sea. Forest Gump was a pretty good movie. Yeah. Bears are scary. Most places you'll ever go, unless you're a seasoned rigged-up remote exploration nut, are domestic af. Swat spiders dead, and bang out your shoes if they've been somewhere dank & you'll be fine. Cows & pedestrians in most states have right of way (on the roads). Zip up your tent. Wear footwear in freshwater (thongs/sandals), cover up your skin if you go out bushwalking. Look before you leap in general. Snakes will generally flee away from noise/vibration & the lingering scent of ppl. If you step near one, don't stand still and wait for it to bite. Don't let Spidey live if he ventures inside. The smaller ones that wobble around looking slowish, fat, or dopey, are poison. The ones that look quick, fierce, and gesture to threaten your composure, are not. But kill them with your shoe either way immediately, before they can hide out and make you nervous. Wow. Horseplay and on-road cow collisions is the only real danger; unless you're laying down drunk & naked by the waters edge way up near the equator. Fuck me. Good to know. I knew there was a reason I instinctively don't go speeding or hopping on horses.

It's not true that Aboriginal people weren't legally considered human until the 1967 referendum. They nearly all had the *vote* from 1962, and nobody thought of that as non-humans voting. (Aboriginal people's right to vote was suppressed by some states before federation, their right to vote in Federal elections was stripped away by a very questionable ruling by the solicitor-general in 1902, and then their right to vote in the other states was unlawfully denied to them through a series of very suspicious "confusions". Aboriginal voting rights started to be restored in 1948, piecemeal.) The 1967 referendum did two things. (1) It changed the rules so that Aboriginal people were included in the census. (2) It transferred the legal power over "Aboriginal affairs" from the states to the Commonwealth, which had the effect of abolishing a lot of racist laws and institutions, such as the exclusion of Aboriginal people from public housing and other entitlements. Excluding Aboriginal people from the census was racist, and also weird. I don't know what it was intended to accomplish. I think that maybe Wentworth borrowed it from provisions in the US constitution that deal with "Indians not taxed", treating them as a sort of foreign national.

I don’t think I’m the best person to talk about their politics. I know some of it but you almost have to live here for a long time or study it to fully understand it
@RandomStuff-he7lu4 жыл бұрын
The Liberal Party is the conservative Party and the Labor Party is the liberal party. We vote by marking the candidates in order of preference - 1, 2, 3, 4................. Voting is done either in person on a paper ballot or by posting in a postal ballot. Voting is compulsory at the Federal and State levels. Some states have compulsory voting in local council elections and some don't.
@allangibson84944 жыл бұрын
Australia has the Liberal Party and “liberal parties”. The Liberal Party is on par with the Democratic Party in the US with their perennial coalition partners the National Party being more right wing. The Labor Party is more left wing but the Reason Party (formerly the Sex Party) being more libertarian. The preference system works by assigning preferences from most preferred to least preferred, the first pass assigns the number of votes with first preference to each candidate, the candidate with the lowest first preference count is then dropped and their second preference is assigned to the other candidates and this cycle continues until one candidate has at least 50% of the preference vote.

Visitors to Australia are more likely to be murdered here than killed by the native wildlife (and Australia is WAY below the US in the global homicide rankings). That said, if you really wanted a fatal encounter with a deadly Oz animal, it wouldn't be tooo hard to arrange! Also, the word "shrimp", going by how tiny the marine animal is, is frequently used by Australians, Kiwis and Brits to describe a person - usually male - who's physically small for their age. "Small fry" would be the American equivalent.
