Read somewhere that magpies can remember 20 (?) faces so we name our magpies and feed them to keep on their good side. Gary and Wendy usually turn up at least once a day a warble to get my attention. If I am not fast enough, I have turned around and found Gary at the back door. Obviously checking to make sure I was getting the food. PS. No.1 rule, swim parallel to the beach if you're in a rip, not against it, then swim in when you're out - they're actually handy, they carry you out and you can ride the waves back in. One thing I have noticed with some overseas visitors, is they don't realise the size of this place. Had a friend from the UK say they were going (from country Vic) to Sydney for the day. They were so used to being able to drive to a different country within a couple of hours that they didn't realise it would take the whole day to go from one city to another.

Pretty good observation for a pom. I want to correct the "Magpie Mating Season" though. Magpies do not swoop during mating season.... they swoop when their chicks are "on the ground". Magpies are wonderful, protective parents and they will warn humans, animals and other birds to stay away once their "children" have ventured from the nest and are learning to fly. Also, the use of "Mate" is correct, but "cunt" is also used as a term of endearment, an insult, in anger - it is all in the way you say it.

@@urizen7613Feeding magpies is contrary to the “don’t feed the wildlife” advice. Near my home we have lots of trees and lots of birds here, including magpies. When I (frequently) see maggies nearby, I just say hello and speak (in a nice and friendly voice), keeping my movements slowish and steady and not crowding them. I don’t feed them. They watch me closely and warily but do not appear to be at all frightened by either my presence or behaviour. Honestly it's only a very small minority of magpies, always the males (less than 10% of males) that actually swoop people. And then it's only a few short months of the year. We all live with resident magpies in almost every street in every town and city throughout Australia most of us, tourists included will never even see a swooping Maggie in our lives. Like the supposed spiders and snakes and almost everything else that's a much over exaggerated and over hyped myth that is completely untrue. Most of us even have daily visits by the local magpie family just coming to say g'day and have a chat about the weather. Coffee tip: Why pay some hipster with a beard and a rat stuck in the back of his head rolled in his hair when you can by a jar at the supermarket for the same price? Then after the cost of proper cow juice you can make yourself 50 coffees how you like your coffee and not what coffee trend you think you should be seen drinking with fake milk trying to fake being the hippest cafe hipster drinking some disgusting tasting inner city coffee that tastes like sh!t.

@@TheJordanaGrace ok thanks for the reply, but maybe in future make it a bit clearer that we have these laws for a bloody good reason, not to annoy tourists who could devastate our wild life and agricultural industry simply because they want to bring in a roll of salami,cheers

Mistake number 6 don't show foreign animals claiming them to be Australian natives. 1:42 that is a squirrel, we don't have squirrels. 1:47 not a possum, that is an American Opossum and a rather nasty little creature unlike our possums. 2:07 Rodger the kangaroo died a few years back. RIP Rodger. I heard he was quite old so he had lead a good life. 2:34 Giant pigeon is an apt description for the bin chicken. 3:46 Good information. You might want to add that emergency here is 000. Although honestly I think a UK tourist is far more likly to need sunburn gel than antivenom. 4:11 Not a magpie. I think that's a Butcher bird. And at 4:31 I think that might be a flock of pied currawongs. Magpies are larger. 4:39 That is a magpie. 5:59 Rabbits were brought over from England by Thomas Austin. He released 24 rabbits on his farm in Victoria for sport hunting and those 24 quickly turned into millions in no time flat. Many fences have been tried as well as bounties and diseases to try and curb the pests. They have done untold damage to the environment. Most cafe's will have good coffee. So long as it isn't an American chain.

Oh my gosh Jo and Sarah thank you so much for the info! 🤩 and great idea for adding 000, I’ll remember that for next time. And poor Rodger! I’m in a rush but just wanted to say thank you and I’m going to copy these notes for later. Please feel free to comment on any videos of things I missed. Might need to get you both on my team lol

I think some of those magpies were European magpies. I think our European settlers came out here, saw some black and white birds and thought they were related to the European magpies - at least until the breeding season.
@joandsarah773 ай бұрын
@@johnganderson Ah a European magpie, that would make sense. It didn't really look like a butcher bird either, but I thought it could be a different type from another area since we are a large country.

... And never tell an Aussie to "throw a shrimp on the Barbie." That's a tourism slogan specifically designed for the American audience. Oh, Aussie is pronounced Ozzie, not Arsie

@@TheJordanaGrace One has opened up in Southern Cross Station, Melbourne, I have seen, maybe, two customers in there. As a fellow pom (now Aussie) I was surprised to see a purveyor of generic brown fluid, open up here. I was told that they tried before, but found that the locals liked real coffee too much...
