Heading out on a European Riverboat Cruise? Or perhaps thinking of booking a Caribbean Cruise on one of the big cruise lines like Carnival Cruises or Norwegian Cruise line? Well here are some things cruise travelers should never do when they go on a cruise, or as we like to say, The Don'ts of Cruise Travel.

Our Gear:
We travel with a Microsoft Surface everywhere we go. I edit my videos on it & use it to backup my pictures and vides while we travel. It’s light and the best travel laptop on the market in my opinion.

We use Sony Alpha series cameras to film our videos. They are compact so you don’t look like a super tourist when you take great pictures and videos while you travel.
amzn.to/2WbTNFH
We use Manfrotto Tripods. They are compact, travel well, and honestly I would not use another tripod for my nice cameras.
amzn.to/35AWqUs
Travel Plug that works in pretty much any country & has four USB ports. A must for any traveler.

Not flying in the day you leave is a must! We went on a cruise last year that left from Venice. Flying from the US, KLM lost our luggage at a connection in Amsterdam (including a bag they forced me to gate check). Thankfully we had 3 days in Venice. The luggage was eventually delivered by KLM...directly to our cabin right before the cruise left port.

IF you take a cruise from Los Angeles and fly into the LAX airport you won't know the ships leave from San Pedro which is a long way from LAX. Ask your hotel to arrange transportation, they are usually happy to do that.

Alan Ferlet So is a mall, your lawyer. Dentist, Disney World, (the government)..... Here’s a example of how much the government screws you out of your money 💰 A very credible auditor named Mark Skidmore conducted a independent audit of the United States and found $21 trillion STOLEN. All expenses must be passed through Congress and $21 trillion was not. Safeguard protocols were purposefully ignored meaning that this was premeditated theft. No one authorized cheque’s adding up to $21 trillion. It is an absolute humongous amount of money. Enough to pay off the debt. www.forbes.com/sites/kotlikoff/2019/01/09/holding-u-s-treasuries-beware-uncle-sam-cant-account-for-21-trillion/

ALWAYS, ALWAYS look for other options for shore excursions besides what the ship offers. I learned that during a vacation in Mazatlan, and the lady who took me horseback riding explained that her company caters to cruise ship passengers. So, in Ketchikan, Alaska, I found a kayak fishing trip where I caught a bunch of fish and even fed one to a bald eagle. Meanwhile, the fishing trips from the ship didn't catch anything, and the bald eagle spotting trips didn't see any bald eagles. At the same time, my wife got off the ship and walked a couple of blocks to the lumberjack show, and paid $6 for the ticket, while the ship was charging $20 for the excursion.

DO NOT book a cruise without getting insurance...Not through the cruise because they are 3rd party and it is much more expensive, usually only getting g a cruise credit..get it through a reputable trip insurance company. 2- Dont assume no one in your family wont get seasick, the patch behind the ear works great, you need a RX..getting sick on board is not only expensive but it can ruin part of your cruise.

There are cruises for all budgets these days. Depending on where you live and how easy it is to get to a cruise port there are always good deals available. It may take some time to save up the fare but if you want to do it I think you should. Cruising is pretty inexpensive really since it includes your transport between places (once on the ship), your accommodation, a lot of entertainment and all your meals if you stick to the restaurants included in the fare. A lot of extras are available but you don't need to pay for these if you don't want to and you'll still have a great holiday.

Never say never! That will guarantee that won't be able to do it. First, do you really want to go on a cruise? Second, why do you say you can't afford a cruise? This is when you look at your expenses versus income. Can you lower expenses or increase your income? How much will it cost you to take a cruise. Look at sites like Vacations to Go to see what cruises actually cost. Third, read some cruise guidebooks. Borrow from the Library or read an older edition for free online. Books will provide an organized look at cruising and all areas of consideration. Videos are great but they can't cover everything. Yes, you do need to get to the port. How will you get there and where is "there? I live in San Antonio, Texas, USA. I can take a plane(s) any where in the world. Can I afford the flights? It depends on where and how much. Can I take a cruise without flying? Yes! I can drive or take a bus or train to Galveston, TX or New Orleans, LA. I am going on a cruise in March 2022 from New Orleans. I already bought my Amtrak round trip train ticket.

Rule 11. Don't get sick! My wife (teetotal) went down with a migraine and sickness, preventing her taking any medication. 30 mins in the sickbay, 3 ECGs, blood tests and 4 small phials of tablets later, came to $1966.00! As to drinks packages, the drinks may be free but you will still be billed for the service. Factor in money for tipping your steward ($15 person, per day last time I went with NCL), head waiter, etc. They actually rely on such gratuities to make up their wages. Also, be prepared for the hard sell, getting you to buy future cruises at "knockdown" prices. This seems to be a bigger problem with line/cruises leaving US ports than ports in Europe/Mediterranean.

This guy is 100% legit. Never been on a cruise (and NEVER will) but I just watched his "don´ts" video about my city, Buenos Aires, and he was spot on. And I also agree with his take on all-inclusive resorts. As a Spanish speaking frecuent visitor to Riviera Maya, with family living there as well, sometimes I rent a house and do the shopping/cooking and we have a great time. For non speakers or those with safety issues, all-inclusive resorts in Yucatán are great value for money. And you can always walk away on the beach when something is not right, as opposed to a cruise, an expensive prison!

The big shock for me cruising was not feeling like I had enough time at a location. I think of cruising now as a great way to scout a location to see if it's awesome going back to. Update 2022: #1. FLYING IN THE DAY OF THE CRUISE. Most large Cruise Lines now offer Fly and Sail Programs. The May cost a tad more than your favorite airline, but you save the cost and hassle of an extra day and motel stay. The Cruise ship will WAIT for tardy flights booked through THEM! #2. Be WARY of getting LEFT BEHIND on a non-ship sponsored EXCURSION !! They may be a bit cheaper, but the ship will NOT WAIT unless it’s one of THEIR EXCURSIONS ! Times are different now,,,,,

And maybe walk for about an hour if it's a nice small town or area. Being on a small cruise ship with the same small group of people every day....I would go for a much larger boat I think. You showed a clip of people with life jackets when you mentioned “orientation” - on the cruises I’ve done, they don’t let you miss it, it is mandatory (and On Carnival, they demonstrate the jackets, but they don’t make you actually put them on, anymore). Maybe for Europe cruises it is different?

On the Holland America cruises, even when departing from Europe, the orientation was mandatory. Perhaps for cruises with only a couple of hundred passengers, they might be optional. Some call it orientation and some call it muster. I think the smaller ships have an orientation that has everyone in one group for safety instructions and details about the ship. The mid size ships (and larger ones too I imagine) we've sailed on just have a muster before sailing where each section meets at their assigned station with their life vests for safety purposes only. Definitely mandatory on the ships we've been on.

That’s what I thought. In the video, he’s talking about it like it’s optional. Odd.

That’s what I said before I saw your comment. The muster drill is not optional. It’s required by law. Maybe he just meant orientation, but he showed people in their life jackets.

When my mom and I did a cruise around the hawaiian islands i was soo worried about her missing the ship to the next port as she is always late.. In Honolulu the ship was about to take off from port and had to backup again after a few mins because someone else was late and the boat waited to pick em up. Thank god my mom wasnt that person.

Almost all cruise lines have a special package for a hotel for a night or 2 at a nice hotel. NCL used to ahve a great deal on an embassy suites hotel for a night or 2 before the cruise and or a night or 2 afterward.

Good points especially for smaller european cruising. On the larger ships, if you do plan on flying in day of departure (which we do most of the time), consider booking air through the cruise line as if you're flight is delayed and you miss the departure, they will get you to the next port of call (on them). Also don't think you won't spend time in your stateroom. We spend a lot of time (got to get away from the hustle and bustle that now-a-days are more like amusement park stays than cruising, so we always get a balcony cabin to have a little haven while others play. Also if you are worried about not getting back to shop from an excursion, book the excursion through the ship as they won't leave you behind. Don't overpack. You won't see these people again so who cares of you're wearing the same outfit every night for dinner. Most of all, don't worry, be happy. You're cruising.

If you're on a river cruise, excursions are included in your fare, so if you don't go, you are paying for something you don't use.

I won’t ever do the excursions through the cruise line again. We were on a Disney cruise and we almost missed the Skagway train excursion because they were slow getting off the boat, and did completely miss our Juneau whale watching tour because we were waiting for one person. They are also a lot more expensive. The only good thing is that they say if you are on the cruise excursion and they are late getting back, they will wait or pay for you to get to the next port rather than it being your expense.

Laura Z The problem was that Disney left us sitting on the ship so we didn’t meet up with the excursion people on time. I realize they can be cancelled, but the left us sitting on the boat is the tour group room, when we asked several times if we were late and going to make it. We could have walked off the ship ourselves and gone to the excursion point ourselves. Same problem with 2 excursions and completely the fault of Disney. They were very disorganized for some reason.

Another thing, do NOT call the ship a boat. You WILL get people that correct you. If not then they will roll their eyes or grit their teeth or something. Trying to skip the muster drill WILL get you kicked off the ship because it is maritime law that everyone attend. But yeah, if you’re late, they will leave you. It is on the passenger to get to the next port and it is at the passenger’s expense.

Don't leave your room key in the room Also don't eat too much icecream if they have it. I made that mistake as a kid. Also I was in a room with no windows and it's not the best but it works but I would suggest at least a room with a window if you can afford that kind of room. Trust me on on the first two since that happened to me back in the day of 2011.

Don't book tours on the boat. As soon as you get off at your ports of call there will be places to go on the same tour for half the price.. I'm not a cruise fan. I feel like a sheep being leed around. I travel with no itinerary because some places that are not what I like and I leave quickly and other places I really like and stay longer. Example I went to Berlin and only spent 2 days. I almost skipped prague and ended up spending 3 days there. Loved it.

Flying the same day is no big deal. IF......Your flight arrives in the AM at your port of embarkation You’ll have time for some snags. These cruises DO NOT leave till the afternoon as they are letting off the last cruise in the morning. (Especially true for large ships) Boat excursions are a big WASTE of money. They cost often 3x or even more (especially in the Caribbean) than what you can find as soon as you walk off the ship. Just make sure you have time to be back on time. Good rule of thumb is plan to be back 90 min before they say you have to be. DO bring your own booze on bigger cruise lines. Wrap it in some clothes in “check” luggage there’s less than a 5% chance they will ever know, as they are moving fast and can NOT check each bag. The risk of it being found is worth trying to save on obscene alcohol prices. Worst case scenario you’re out money on a bottle or two of liquor. Happy cruising.

Some people have commented on how cruises 'nickel and dime' patrons to get them to spend money on booze, and tours. Economically speaking, this is 'price discrimination' which gives everybody the cruise the want and by 'legally' pricing down the demand curve produces a lower breakeven price so more of us can cruise like the Rockefellers.
