Early Doobie Brothers just cranks. They sound loose, but they are actually very tight and everyone could sing. Massive sounds of my summer teen years.

I remember as a kid working at a Honda dealership. There was a used car there on the lot that I had to clean up because they were going to sell it. There was stuff left in the car that you would throw away and one of the things I found was an old cassette tape that had several songs on it recorded by some one and one of the songs was "China Grove." I kept that tape, and that, ladies and gentleman, was my introduction to this song. Great groove, China Grove. 0

As others may have said, it seems like they have 2 eras; their 70’s era (Mom had Doobie Brothers Albums that I l grew up hearing), and then the 80’s era with Michael MacDonald, which I leaned towards. ALL of it is so good ❤. Your reactions are truly the best; we reap the benefit of the fact that you are both musicians; you react to the feel and the technical; so many times we are learning more about the songs from your first reaction ❤

I like Michael McDonald but this is my favorite era of The Doobies 😎
@kbrewski110 ай бұрын
They continued playing all their classic early 70s tunes under McDonald. They just broadened their sound, increased the fan base and became even more well known. I saw them in 77 or 78 and they were a great live band with McDonald. I never understood the need to create a split, a division, make it an either/or. You got both w McD, you can enjoy both.

Hey fellas. It's amazing to me that although I've heard this song thousands of times and even sang it in cover bands, it still sounds fresh to me. The Doobie Brothers had hit albums again and again since 1971, but The Doobie Brothers didn't make the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame until 2020, Other great artists like Joe Cocker Boston, Peter Frampton, Barry White, Humble Pie, Supertramp, Toto, and Kansas still aren't In the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. It's a shame so many great bands and musicians are left out. Thank you for playing so much of the music some people considered good enough for a bit of love. Airplay Beats gives love and respect to all the music. The Airplay Beats Hall of Fame is better anyway.

I grew up not far from "China Grove." History has it that its named after a type of Chinese type of tree or shrub that grows wild in that area. Another story tells of a late 19th century migration of Chinese immigrants that came through this area. You could say historians are at odds as to which tale is truth. All I know is San Antonio (just 30 miles or so West of China Grove) sure has a lot old Chinese graveyards.

China Grove Texas. It isn't the same little town they were singing about in the 70s. Like most small towns, they tend to get bigger. I couldn't get enough of this song in junior high. It's still sounds great now. But I would say, yeah it's definitely more rock for them, but really it's quite funky underneath. Not just the incredible bass line, but also you can see people just doing a really funky kind of rock dancing to this.

Love the Doobies & have seen every version of the group. I prefer the earlier version of the band ( pre Michael McDonald ) & the later version when they reformed in the 90s. They are now touring for their 50th anniversary & Michael McDonald is joining them. Once a Doobie Brother always a Doobie Brother. Check out their Motown Covers of " Take me in Your Arms" & " Little Darling". When they reformed in the 90s they had several hits. "The Doctor" & "Dangerous" Peace!

@scottsnyder272610 ай бұрын
William Payne, co-founder of Little Feat with Lowell George, on the piano. And yes, having piano while rocking out with guitars a fixture in the 70s. Added a more robust sound. Doobies were well-respected in the music community and their session personnel overlapped with other era bands. There was a bit of a musical formula during that time that developed with chords, hooks, repeating choruses, etc. but The Doobies, specifically with this song, did it well. And strong harmonic voices.

Great song in a super era of music! If you can, check out a cool tune of the Doobies from about 1975. It's called 'For Someone Special'. It was written by then bass player for Doobies, Tiran Porter... who also was the vocalist for the tune. Really a smooth groove of a song. Tiran composed it in honor of Tom Johnston, who had to leave the band for quite awhile due to health reasons.

The Doobie Brothers is from San Jose. It used to play ▶️ at San Jose State University before being signed by Warner Brothers. Produced by Ted Templeman, a Santa Cruz native. He also produced the late Nicollette Larson, RIP, Michael McDonald, Montrose and 6 Van Halen albums. Written by and sung by Tom Johnston. Album including this song was released in March 1973. Baseball ⚾️ notes 📝 By then, the Athletics won its 1st World Series title while in Oakland🏆 The 2nd title will have been won in October, 1973 🏆. 50 years 🎂 Tom Johnston wore an Oakland Athletics jersey 🎽 whe singing this song at the Greek Theater concert in Berkeley in 1982.
