During that period of time the Doobie Brothers lived next door to my place, well one door down. We got along great. My roommate was a jazz drummer so music was everywhere. They did piss me off before I let it go. They parked their big truck, trailer on our road in our little dirt road town of Montara, south of San Francisco on the coast. We couldn't get around the big rig to drive up the hill! They were nice people all in all. Also used to see Neil Young come down from his mountain ranch to buy perogies at the little Italian Mkt. The cool thing was none of them wanted or were treated special. They just wanted to hide away from the public and be real. It was a great time to be alive.

I'm living in my 34th address in places all over the world, but was blessed to live in the San Antonio area for over 20 years, and in my daily commute passed through China Grove twice a day, so I love this song, even given it's two glaring errors. First, NO ONE from the San Antonio area refers to the city as "San Antone"--it is ALWAYS "San Antonio." Second, the Samurai were exclusive to Japan, so there's no reason decedents of China would have any connection to the Samurai or Samurai swords. Despite these faux pas, this is still in my top 5 favorite songs, and always brings my soul back to my beloved San Antonio.

This song is very emotional for me. The tune came out about a month before I started my freshman year in college. I was in the dorm room and my roommate takes out his Gibson SG and plays the intro from China Grove. I was a big city kid and he was from a farm near a town of 100 population. We were from two very different worlds and music brought us together for life. I live in MN and lives in CA. We had lunch together a couple of months ago.

That's right, we did. The actual DJ would answer his own phone. One time I requested a song the guy didn't have, but the next day he dug up another record by the same band and played it just for me. (Thanks, Al Otero at KABQ!) Many years later I called a Bay Area DJ and asked for Rush..... That did not go well. He couldn't give me a straight answer as to why, but basically corporate HQ had decided that "that music" wasn't right for "this demographic ". Psssshhhh.
