Glad to see someone “discover” the talent of the Doobies, and how great this song is in particular. Patrick Simmons is a phenomenal, underrated guitarist. You know why you never hear anybody cover this song? It’s extremely difficult to play. Yet Patrick Simmons, Tom Johnston, and now John McFee pull it off night after night live. If you liked this you’ll also probably like “I Cheat the Hangman” on “Stampede,” and if you want to really dig into their early rockers check out “Without You,” “Disciple,” “Down in the Track,” and “Road Angel.”

Awesome review JP! It was such a pleasant surprise to see your review of this Doobie Brothers deep cut. "The Captain and Me" has been one of my favorite albums since I bought it as a teenager in the 1970s. In my opinion it's the best Doobie Brothers album and worth a complete album review. Aside from "China Grove" and "Long Train Runnin'" which were both huge radio hits, the album includes several gems in addition to "Clear as the Driven Snow". "South City Midnight Lady" is a country-style ballad that, similar to "Clear as the Driven Snow", transitions to a strong instrumental finish. The connected "Ukiah" and "The Captain and Me" are a fine pairing and the latter track is one of my favorite songs of all time (check out the lyrics, they pretty much fall right into line with the album theme that you deduced from the cover photo). Trust me, if you're not already familiar with the other songs on the album then this one is worth a deep dive.

JP! Just to let you know, it was some time ago that I mentioned this song. I saw them at the Veterans Stadium in Columbus Ohio about the same time they released the album The Captain and me. I loved the (pre McDonald era) Doobies and never was into country. It felt like a little Cajun was in their music that was influenced by their home in southern Texas. You can catch their lyrics that hints of a Louisiana heritage. Anyway, it was a great concert and I feel that I was in a blessed time for music. At 73 yrs, I still love rock.

As far as seeing snow, I live in the northeast where snow is the very definition of winter so to hear you say you've only seen it once made me chuckle. Speaking of snow (lmao you know where this is going), you know there is another artist who sang about snow and it was among his most well-known songs, the artist is Frank Zappa and you should listen to "The Ocean Is the Ultimate Solution" Its a great song I think you'd like it. What a great reaction. This song is one of my favorites, but it's such a deep cut nobody outside the Doobie fans really knows it. This is an interesting mix of rock, country, and to some degree prog elements, coming unexpectedly from this band. I bought this album when it came out (I was 9!). The guitar solo at the end ranks as one of my top 10 favorite solos, mostly for how well it evolves from the earlier parts of the song. The dichotomy between Pat's finger-picking style earlier in the song and the good heavy early mid-70's guitar tone in the solo has always captivated me. The whole song is very organic and could indeed be the product of them just jamming around. And I agree with others below, I always took the lyrics to be about drug use and trying to stay clean.

The last 2 songs, Are joined on the album ( Ukiah, The Captain and Me ) much like the last 2 songs on Joni's "Court and Spark". However, these two can be played separately without any problem. Still, playing the final two together creates a bit of a "feel good opus" to end the album, and it gives you a chance to hear the main lead singer, Tom Johnson, do his thing. I always smile when I see some of the comments from the younger folk hearing some of the classic groups for the first time. I grew up in the South Bay and think of them as the local biker band that made it big. They played at a bar in the Santa Cruz Mountains called the Chateau Liberte and my older brother snuck me in when I was a high school senior and saw them many times back then. They started by trying to revive Moby Grape who, if you don't know, was one of the greatest bands from that era along with The Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, and The Quicksilver Messenger Service. The Doobies morphed when Tom Johnston had to quit mid-tour from a bleeding ulcer and was replaced my Michael McDonald who brought the whole jazz influence. All of the above were great bands and The Doobies are still touring 50 years later.

Your making me a Doobie Brothers fan. I only own Stampede, this is really good. I love early Southern Rock, like the Allmans, Marshall Tucker, even Charlie Daniel's. They were willing to stretch what you considered "County". I didn't realize the Doobies belong with them. I'm not a fan of what came after, cliche Southern Rock and today's slick Nashville Pop County. Thanks for playing this, I gotta give it up to the Doobies!

This is another Pat Simmons song as was I Cheat The Hangman. He has a terrific voice and guitar skills. As for this era of the Doobies, the primary writer was Tom Johnston who has a more R & B approach. You must remember Justin...that The Doobie Brothers were/are among the gods of Rock n' Roll. The music they played was Rock n' Roll mixed with Cajun music which is French style fused with Blues.......Arranged vocals harmonies...."Black Waters" their big hit before Michael come along who added more soul and Black Gospel music into the group...They were a good band but their vocals and sound was similar to Three Dog Night......Grand Funk Railroad....and Deep Purple.....with Michael come in ...... His unique vocals and keyboard and songwriting...set they group apart and gave them a real "Identity." This song show off their musical abilities.....great stuff.....but with Michael in there..it would have been more "Funkier."

It sounds more folk than country to me but they both have the same roots I guess. It is another great song that I had never heard before from a band I only knew from their hits. Black Water was my favourite so it isn't any surprise this works so well for me. Listening to this, I am reminded, musically, of Bruce Cockburn's Badlands Flashback. I am not interested in Cockburn's mystical religious views (though they certainly influence the lyrics on a lot of his songs) but I like his music (he has a unique guitar style that Wings of Pegasus covers) and his willingness to take a moral stance. He is well known in Canada and Europe but for some reason, even after releasing 34 albums, the USA never developed an interest in his music. He has been covered by Jerry Garcia, The Barenaked Ladies and Blackie and the Rodeo Kings to name a few.

I heard Pat wrote the song after getting up one morning with a hangover and thought about quitting drugs/alcohol.
