This tune hits the soul so very. very hard. Without a doubt -- the very best Doobies recording ever ... & that's sayin somethin, they've got so many great ones. Pat Simmons struck gold on this one!

The Doobies have an amazing, deep catalog. So many incredible songs beyond the big hits that always get played. Pat Simmons was a master of atmospheric, complex songs like this one. Clear as the Driven Snow has to be the best, in my opinion

You are so spot on! I bought DB’s albums for the song on the radio. I fell in love with the songs Par Simmons was involved with, Clear as the Driven Snow is my favorite, and I wish more ppl could hear it.

Great song written and sung by Patrick Simmons the other original Doobie singer. This was on my shortlist of Doobies song for you to react to. Now I’ll have to suggest Clear as the Driven Snow. Nice guitar playing intro Nick. I can’t wait to get a chance to support some more reactions soon. 👍👍👍👍

I love this song. The idea for the song came from the Ambrose Bierce short story, "An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge" about a hanging on a railroad bridge during the US Civil War. The short story is great, and this song is brilliant musically.

Don't know if you realized it, but the "old doobies" used 2 drummers AND a percussion section, which I always felt helped to "drive" their their songs and really made you "feel" their music.....

I think Nick is finally understanding what we have been telling him about the Doobies and the split personality that they had. I love MM's voice but I hated what he did to the Doobies during those years. I had the biggest fan girl crush on Pat Simmons. This is a great, great song, thanks for reviewing! You need to do "Clear as the Driven Snow" to finish your understanding of how great a band this was and is.

As stated, from The Captain and Me album, the tune Clear As the Driven Snow would be a track you would really get into as well. I'm always going for the lesser commercial tracks myself. With regard to the Michael McDonald/Doobie recordings, there are a lot of great tracks on the Takin' It To the Streets album....a lot of diversity on that one. Really though, all of their stuff up to and including Minute By Minute from '78 are great. My two favs would be The Captain and Me and What Were Once Vices albums.

I remember the Doobies doing a short version of this song on the 70's show "What's Happening" where Rerun gets black mailed into secretly recording a bootleg version of the Doobies concert, and well the fun and comedy ensue. When the band performed the instrumental last part of this song the late drummer of the Doobies John Hartman had a setup with a gong which he played with a flaming gong stick which was super cool. On a bit of a sad note, the Doobies had two drummers at the same time, John Hartman and Michael Hossack who have both passed away RIP

I'm 60, and I'm sure I heard this song decades ago, but The Drive in Chicago played it a year ago...and stopped me in my tracks. It was vaguely familiar...and hauntingly beautiful!! Thankfully I Shazamed it, and have been shamelessly indulging in it ever since. So my point is, I can definitely relate to your reaction since I was just there a year ago myself. I'm so grateful that 97.1 still plays some amazing classics! And Paul from Engineering is my 7:45 a.m. Friday weekly indulgence too. 😉

This is my favorite Doobie Brothers song. And I really wish they made more music like this…. Which isn’t to say I don’t like their other pieces because I do. And I guess it would have been hard in those days to release more than they already were doing. Nowadays bands probably could do so much more. It’s a pity that with all the creation tools and distribution channels available today the musicians are not making more music on this level. I think to make THIS requires a lot of collaboration, and people with this level of talent use tools to do everything practically alone because they don’t have to collaborate…. Anyway, something leaves us in a kind of desert these days and makes “the old days” very special indeed.

I so much appreciate this really deep into The Doobies, their catalog is full of overlooked gems. I, too, 😊agree that their earlier stuff is more to my taste than the McDonald era pop (but thats not all bad, either). 3 frontmen who can all write, sing and play killer guitar backed by a seriously underappreciated bass player, Tiran Porter. Toulouse Street is a great album for you to explore. And yes, their direction changed on "Takin' It To The Streets" with the addition of McDonald, it was still a VERY good album. Porter's bass drives every song.

Great reaction to this wonderful masterpiece. I saw them 4 times in concert in the Seattle area. Not the MM years though. Don't sweat the lyrics. In my day, we had the album covers to look at while absorbing the music. Ironically, my copy of the LP is a radio give away test pressing which only came in a plain white cover, so didn't help me out back then.

That whole Stampede album is great. Check out the song Toulouse Street from the album Toulouse Street. It sort of has that spooky, mysterious sound like Hangman. The original Doobies are the best. Nothing against McDonald. That guy has an amazing voice. I've been relistening to an album I had from the '70s, that you would like. I forgot how great it was. It's the Watch album from Mannfred Mann's Earth Band. Good from start to finish.

Hi Nick, another great early Doobie Brothers track. There are plenty more surprises in store with their early material. This one with the chaotic orchestral fade out, reminds me of The Beatles doing that on "A Day in the Life" and makes me wonder, just how much "Sgt Pepper" really influenced groups that followed, after hearing that album ? After a lifetime of listening to music, all I can say is, the musical journey you are on, is a joy to look forward to, what you will discover, and an even greater joy, looking back later in life, remembering the past. Tom Johnston's rockers are decent enough, if IMO a bit generic for all the airplay they get. And I pretty much loathe Michael McDonald with every fibre of my being. But now I'm actually angry. Because all those Johnston and McDonald songs kept me from buying their albums and finding all the great Patrick Simmons songs. I mean, "Black Water" was nice enough, but I had no idea there was stuff like this in the back catalogue. Jiminy Cree.
