Well, we've listened to 3 live versions and all of them sound like "he". The meaning of that line we could debate all day I guess, but a gentleman would stand up when a lady leaves the table in times gone by. But I did check myself before I commented - here's the version I listened to: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fWOvlIV-hNR_j6ssi=y0EGRB5sSZ7KohTE. Doesn't that sound like a 'SHE'? What do you reckon? At both points in that version it sounds like 'SHE' I think. Perhaps there's some variation in different versions that has created the confusion - my apologies for not realising that. Even in your video here you use both: 'HE' at 1:07 and 'SHE' at 2:19. I mean, both make sense and it seems like Michael McDonald himself swapped them around!

On that version I think the first one has a cymbal (possibly hi-hat) sound just as that word is being sung, adding an extra 'sss' sound to the word. @Tyler P the background vocals (which are not muted) sing a different part than the lead vocals at the end. Listen to the song and you'll see, it's not messed up at all. Believe me, I was confused too at first
