I’ve always felt that despite not winning a championship the Jazz have always done very well at building consistently good teams, considering the small market they operate in. Low-key an underrated franchise in terms of management.

AKA "mid"!! See, what they SHOULD do is trade all their picks for a disgruntled star that wants out 6 months later... then do that all again. But actually building TEAMS and serving THE COMMUNITY?? Fk that shit!

The internet has overused mid so much they’ve lost the meaning. Mid means middle. Something like the Hawks would be the definition of mid - always around .500. Half the time missing the playoffs, and besides twice, I don’t believe they’ve made it past the first round in like 15 years.

While definitely a small market, Salt Lake City really isn't as small of one as you think it is. The SLC CSA has like ≈2x the population of say the New Orleans or Memphis CSA's. Salt Lake City itself just isn't a massive city population-wise because of the way it was zoned and mostly being a commuter city.
@LockeDemosthenes2

@@Cooe. I mean, yeah. I live there, so I'm aware of this. The city has only like 200k people, but the metro population is about 2 million. Even then, it's smaller than the vast majority of NBA markets. It's rated 23rd out of 28 markets (because NY and LA both have 2 teams). Even then, with the exception of San Antonio (which is arguably the best run small market team in pro sports), the Jazz are among the best in terms of success in relatively low populated regions.
@THE_BEAR_JEW

@@LockeDemosthenes2 Still bad though. Impressive only when weighed on a scale of low expectations. Even their drafting is just ok. The best they've drafted since Malone is Mitchell and he's not exactly a top 10 player. Other noteworthy names are Hayward and Deron Williams, who were not top 10 guys either. Maybe Deron Williams was for like 2 seasons.

As a Jazz fan, the most frustrating thing is that these teams were actually good and so fun to watch. I remember prime Steph and the Warriors pulling up in Utah to get blown out by Rudy-Mitch by 30. And it happened more than once. Gordon Hayward hitting a buzzer beater against prime LeBron and the Cavs who would win the chip that year. And sometimes Stockton-Malone would dismantle MJ and the Bulls. The teams could just never do it when it mattered most. But hey, there can only be one champion. We’ll have ours one day, until then, we still continue to have our small moments.

As a jazz fan, I love our team. Even though I know the chances of keeping a superstar here are slim to none, it’s just cool to think we have a franchise that does their best to stay competitive amongst the other giant markets. As a Jazz fan, I seriously feel like we consistently get dealt bad hands. Our two best ever players are a pedo and an anti-vaxxer, we "contended" in the Jordan era, we consistently managed to rebuild and field competitive teams, but always seemed to catch some sort of all time player. Kobe dogged us for years, and even as an old man he dropped 60 on us. Then Hayward betrayed us to go to Boston, but we managed to draft a star in Mitchell, and things were looking up. But then we gave too much money to Ingles, Royce, Bojan and a few others. If we just had a few perimeter defenders and a backup big, I think the Mitchell and Gobert core would still be together. It annoys me how unfortunate we've been. Even the strain between Mitchell and Gobert was caused by the pandemic. Im especially pissed off because I became a Jazz fan over a game that I watched in 2011. Jazz @ Heat. I decided to root for whoever won, and Paul Millsap's stupid ass had to become fucking Tmac and condemn me to this shit. Here's hoping Lauri can turn our fortunes around, but idk

Lauri is rly good, and yall have a bunch of picks, Ainge at the helm, and young guys like Ochai, Keyonte, Hendricks, Kessler, Sensabaugh, Fonteccio, etc. The John Collins thing was a bad idea with hindsight, but he’s only got 2 more years after this one so w/e. Also the West is stacked, so even with a really good HC (forgot to mention that) and some good players, you should be able to keep your T10 protected 1st for this year at least. I mean you’re at the 10 spot rn, and Lauri is healthy…but some teams below you should start winning more. MEM is only a few games back. TOR should be a bit better with the fit of IQ and they have no incentive to tank bc they’re not gonna be bad enough to keep a T6 protected pick without crazy lotto luck, then maybe ATL makes a trade or something. You shouldn’t be higher than the 11 seed ever really, and as long as MEM passes you you’ll be 12. And all you need to basically guarantee keeping T10 protected pick is the 9th best odds. 9th odds is a T10 pick like 97%. Even 10th is around 80%. So if you’re around the 11th spot with like 8-10g to go, just gotta sit a couple guys and get that 9 spot and you’ll have a T10 pick 97%. ‘25 is T10 protected too, but ideally at that point you’re too good to keep it idk. Even tho this draft is weaker than normal, you never know…and it always helps to add one more T10 pick. Plus if you keep this pick this year, giving it up in 2025 isn’t so bad since that’s when the picks start coming in. CLE/MIN picks are in ‘25 so after this year you’re good. GL

You forgot how in the years b4 Mitchell, Hayward took them to the playoffs in 16 and 17 which is pretty hard in the west and in 17 they beat the clippers and that was cp3 last game on the clippers and interestingly enough the jazzs teams led by Hayward both years lost to the warriors

Utah Jazz can be summed up as 90s: Jordan and Malone is a playoff choker 2000s: Mediocre but still there, most known for beating the We Believe Warriors and losing to the Spurs the next round 2010s: Known for blowing huge leads and being mediocre One thing I will give Utah credit for is, they know how to produce QUALITY all star level Point Guards; Stockton, DWill, Mike Conley, Ricky Rubio

The Deron Williams and Mitchell/Gobert era Jazz are both what I would call "fake contenders". Good regular seasons, maybe even a good playoff seed, but never realistically close to winning a chip. Jazz only made the WCF in '07 bc they faced an 8 seed in round 2. Mitchell/Gobert, meanwhile, after getting the no. 1 seed in 2021, blew a 2-0 lead to perhaps the most cursed franchise in NBA history w/no Kawhi. Wild. Even so, I was still foolish enough to think they'd be favorites with Luka hurt in 2022, but somehow they got themselves down 2-1 before Luka even played. Fake contenders, no way around it

They had longevity but not greatness. Their heights were never as good as the best of their era, so they failed. There was always someone better, when it wasn’t Drexler, it was Payton and Kemp, or Olajuwon or MJ and Pippen.

It's okay, I missed the first few seconds... Who the fuck cares about "triple doubles"?? Meaningless arbitrary "catchphrase" isn't how games are won!! MJ didn't average a triple-double... so I guess he's trash... 20pts 8rbs 12 assts is arguably better than 20/10/10 9pts 17asst 7tbs arguably better than 20/10/10

93-94 no Jordan = Lost NBA Western Conference Finals (1-4) versus Houston Rockets Fair, Hakeem. 94-95 Jordan came back = Lost NBA Western Conference First Round (2-3) versus Houston Rockets Fair, Hakeem. 98-99 no Jordan = Lost NBA Western Conference Semifinals (2-4) versus Portland Trail Blazers Malone 35 yo, Stockton 36 yo 99-00 no Jordan = Lost NBA Western Conference Semifinals (1-4) versus Portland Trail Blazers Felt like they underachieved here this 2 years or the 90s competition really isn't there. MJ, Hakeem, Shaq+Kobe really gate-keep the sh** out of them. 90s Jazz probably had the best odds to win a chip - - - - - Deron+Boozer+AK just doesn't feel like a real contender Hayward's meh Mitchell+Gobert's meh (Totally forgot about this stint somehow) Lauri+Clarkson's meh Man they're like the Hawks of the West. Which technically isn't that bad of a team for fans.
