Hey Brother it's Surfer John from Oceanside California again on 55 and I got cold chills when I saw the two songs you're about to do from the doors! I knew you were going to do an amazing job and I knew you're going to love it Jim Morrison it has the voice where me and my buddies can get drunk and sing like drunken Sailors that is so fun and we know every lyric by heart because we love him so much! Also this is very important for you to understand when he sings about a woman he sings about Pam his girlfriend his longtime girlfriend women wanted him all over the world but he stuck to her he died with her the songs he sings about women is about Pam always Pam very important also he was very non-confrontational even though he look like he was he's scare you with his presence but really wasn't a fighter at all except for one brawl with some Harley-Davidson Hells Angels guys back in the day but that's about it! I'm so excited for you to do the rest of the album and all their albums cuz it just is amazing and I love watching your reaction cuz you're so damn smart mate have a beautiful day!

The Doors just has their own unique sound, a combo of Morrison and talented musicians. They borrowed from a lot of influences, but made it their own.

One of the great debut albums of all time. Yes it's Morrisons voice backed by his great songwriting and of course Krieger, Manzarek and Densmore.

My first Doors experience…. 1979 .. I was in third grade and asked for this album for Xmas…. All because an older girl on the school bus had a picture of Jim on her notebook….. I wanted to get yo know her in the worst way . So I asked who and then decided to listen…. Can’t remember the girl anymore.. but The Doors changed my life forever after …. Fair trade in my opinion….

Growing up with this album, and other groups of that era, was amazing, we just didn't know how amazing and how fortunate we really were, until years later. Also, I think the term "20th Century Fox" was a play on words for the very popular movie company of the time (still around, with a name variation).

You said it correctly my friend. The Doors are all about atmosphere and vibe. The combination of the music and Morrison's voice create an otherworldly space. The Crystal Ship is one of my favorites and in fact, I sang it many times in cover bands. Keep listening and discovering all this great music. Peace.

If you really get into the Doors they released a poetry album called American Prayer, after Jim died, it's amazing, they put music to spoken word poetry and different things from Jim, and is very well done my friends used to listen to it when we were teenagers and some of the quotes from that album I still use today, and I'm 43

An American Prayer is the 4th best Doors record, IMO, behind L.A. Woman, The Debut, and The Soft Parade in that order.

My generation was blessed to grow up listening to these great poets/musicians on the radio. There were just too many to name, as each week it seemed you’d hear another new band that just blew you way. The Beatles showed the World that there was a huge teen market out there, inspiring countless musicians to pick up guitars. And Dylan showed that the lyrics could say more than ya, ya, ya. And we got to enjoy all the classic music that followed. Thanks for sharing it with your generation.✌️❤️🎶

"The Crystal Ship" was sufficiently influential that it led SF author Joan D. Vinge to write her (also somewhat psychedelic) 1976 short story of the same title.

John Densmore was drummer in a marching band as a teenager..which involves a lot of wrist action. and movement.most rock drummers drum from the arm, but Densmore's uniqueness is his loose wrist style. I saw the tribute band 'the Australian doors' in the early nighties and they were pretty good imitators..when i closed my eyes it was almost like listening to the Doors, except for the drumming as Densmore's style was very hard to replicate without that same formative learning experience

Good idea on jumping back after pausing as a significant part of great music is the rhythm, key and other changes.

The Doors were actually not a rock group in the classic sense whatsoever. Classical keyboards, Spanish/Flamenco inspired guitar, jazz drumming. It all worked beautifully with Morrison’s poetry.

Two American writers (Eve Babitz and Joan Didion) wrote separate essays about their encounters with Jim Morrison - both essays are brilliant and it's hard to listen to Jim Morrison without thinking of the man portrayed in them.

Jim Morrisons dad and Steven Stills dad were high ranking navel intelligence. Mommas and Poppas, Byrds and Moby Grape also tangentially connected. They congregated in Laurel Canyon to create a scene. In London the Tavestock Institute was connected to the British Invasion bands. Kubrick directly addresses it Clockwork Orange and indirectly in Lolita. He revisited the theme in Eyes Wide Shut.

someone said further down in the comments the crystal ship is a reference to heroin.. i heard different the crystal ship is reference to a crystal decanter of whisky and morrisons love of whisky .. he was drinking 3 bottles a day b4 he died .. the lyrics are very ambiguous as always with the doors and what songs like a love song could easily be interpreted as a love affair with a woman/women or love affair with drugs/whiskey

Someone told me that "Crystal Ship," is a reference to heroin. It kinda makes sense since Courson was addicted to heroin.

I've always thought this song was about a real young woman. Maybe that's because I've always associated it with my wife. This song was from the women's liberation era, and the woman he describes in this song was well ahead of her time. Always loved that line "she won't waste time on elementary talk."

But it was called "Hip-Hop" then. lol....we had no such word...right...it was just music that had this cadence that emphasized certain phrases or words.....now you can see where Hip-Hop got that cadence from.

One thing I liked about being in the 60's was most major bands had a signature style and voice and when you heard hat voice or style ..we knew what band we were listening to....now in these days there are no signature style or voice to recognize that band. Sounds the same..same cadence....almost same vocal.....more vocals than music solos......so, I pay little attention to today's music.

@@seandeoro7995 zappa was hip to early '66 doors & also gave the band credit.... however, a lot of their other peers like byrds, buffalo springfield, stones, hendrix didnt like the doors & morrison in particular. imo they didnt get what he was really doing, plus were turned off by his inconsistency and belligerence when drunk.

I feel like Jim Morrison's death was always just lurking in the background. That was his dark intensity. He had that magical charisma, but was so self destructive. His girlfriend who was with him when he died only lived a few more years after him. You were curious about his women. This is her en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pamela_Courson
