I've read a lot of comments about the one-dimensional portrayal of Morrison in The Doors movie, but I think the one who was done the greatest disservice was Densmore. IRL, he's such a thoughtful, honorable man of integrity who clearly holds Jim in the highest regard. But in the movie, he seemed like more of a foil to Jim, like he was on a completely different wavelength and didn't seem to get where Jim was coming from.

However, John's words are too harsh at some moments, as if he was not able to put himself in Jim's shoes. I don't believe that Jim's problems are caused just by his desire of unlimited freedom. I don't agree with Jim's attitudes but I also can imagine myself at his place. He had a troubled relationship with his parents because of the authoritarianism which he hated (and me too). He was a sensitive and intelligent man who thought about the problems of society. He was not just a crazy man. I'm not saying that John is wrong, but I think that he could talk more about this another side of Jim's personality. What the remaining Doors should have done is to take the money, the $15 million, and given it to Martin Scorsese, so he could make a movie that showed Jim as the three dimensional person he was. Ston'es movie only presents one side of Jim, the guy Ray referred to as Jimbo. But as one of Jim's girlfriends said, "Jim was a complete person on both sides of the spectrum." Not to mention Robby wrote a lot of songs as well. John was also very creative in the fact that he added a lot of unique and out of the box drum patterns to the songs. A lot of those were influenced by latin music as well as jazz, he was not a simple four on the floor rock drummer. Robby was also had a unique sound of his own due to his upbringing in classical flamenco guitar, and carried that over to electric as well. And of course Ray is just plain fantastic as well. Densmore is vague when debating what legacy he protected by suing Ray and Robby.
@amandajstar4 жыл бұрын
Yes, and is rather incoherent about it. On the one hand he admits that he was 'enticed by the dough'. A bit later he says it wasn't about the dough because the band had nice houses and cars. Still, how much is enough? And unless I missed something, he pretty much skipped the question of what exactly he objected to about Ray and Robby playing on their own in any way as 'the Doors'. Everyone knew it wasn't the old fab four Doors: it's not like they were trying to fool anybody. Either he had unexplored motives, or he knows his motives well enough but doesn't want to share them.

@@amandajstar definitely agree. The whole thing makes him seem very shady.

@ He comes across well enough: polite, friendly, smiles appropriately, and so on. But there's something else going on in this story that he isn't fessing up to, I think. Otherwise, why not say straight out why he felt stung into suing? Going into court is no fun (nor cheap) for most people: you have to be really motivated.

@@amandajstar good point.... the cadillac commercial thing was more clear cut. I can get that, though I also understand ray/robbie take on it.... but the band using the name was bordering on petty on his part in re to bringing a lawsuit against bandmates.

I think rest of the band just want to go out there and play some Doors songs it really wasn't about making money
@amandajstar4 жыл бұрын
It's always about making money. It may be about many other things, but it's always about the money, too. As an artist myself, I never bother to kid myself (or anyone else) about that. I'm not any less an artist just because I want to be remunerated.

i think john really liked tackling the denser questions then usual, but i think jian comes thru a persisting a bit much, almost like he wants john to back track on some of the choices he made for the vision of the doors, i respect the fact that there was a idea the four members had of the band going, and john is upholding that, and there are songs that have been tarnished from hearing it a bit much on car commercials

@2:40 there was a guy up here in the Seattle area who became a local celebrity by smashing a car with a sledge hammer in a TV commercial. He owned a Chevy dealership and smashed a Vette. It shocked the hell out of everybody and he made a crap ton of money.

The sad thing is the Doors estate seems kinda greedy now with all the re-issues and re-issues and re-issues of the same songs. Still my favorite band of all time though

they put out a Doors album without Jim i think Ray did the vocal
@breando110 жыл бұрын
Yes they did two albums like that actually and I've always wondered where that fitted in with what John has been saying about never being the Doors again without Jim. I wish someone in these types of interviews would ask him.

Two albums - Other Voices (1971) and Full Circle (1972) they then toured for Full Circle, some shows were excellent, some not so good, but with no big hits and only "The Mosquito" making it on the charts (barely) they called it quits, and Ray began his solo career, and Robbie too.

Just an FYI, Densmore had a significant payout as a result of him suing Robbie and Ray. Also Morrison’s family and Morrison’s girlfriends family also split it

Great questions! Love DENSMORE..not convinced he's totally respected as a great drummer but John... you are mistaken. Ray and Robby are right to give the songs to commercial and reach out to younger audiences. Your in mid 70s and I 60s... we are a dying breed. Nothing wrong to use your songs, they're are not butchering it, they love it that's why millions of dollars were offered

Turning down money when you're no longer wealthy is a bitter pill. I can understand why Ray was angry; money buys freedom.
