I was 12 when The Doors started on the music scene early 1967. They blew me away too. I grew up on the Doors and Cream. To this day I still have difficulty ranking Led Zep, The Doors, & The Who, 1 through 3. Thats pretty good company. It is fun knowing the words and music many years later before its even spoken or played. The two songs she played I can easily play them from beginning to end in my head. Thats a mind blown away by The Doors.

It's like The Doors sang those two songs especially for you, Rebeka. As you may know, those two songs are off their first album. The depth, musical complexity, and the lyrical poetry of The Doors' music stays with you and leaves you contemplating life's mysteries, meanings, and realities. Jim Morrison proposed the name for the band from a book by Aldous Huxley called The Doors of Perception. Huxley took the name from a quote by writer William Blake, "If the doors of perceptions were cleansed, everything would appear to man as it is, Infinite." Jim was going deep and the band went with him to produce some of the greatest, most interesting rock music of all time. 👍💖🎸😎

Rebeka...I always enjoy watching your reaction to videos. The bands from my era (I'm 65 now) and especially those I have seen in person are definitely my favorite ones. Two quick notes here: 1.) The show was called American Bandstand and they only allowed bands to perform previously produced musical tracks from their records and tried to pass it off as live with lip syncing and fake playing. Those were both studio versions of those songs. John Densmore could not have played the elaborate drumming of Light My Fire on that little set they had on the platform! 2.) The version of Light My Fire we watched was the 45 version of the song and they totally cut the keyboard and guitar solos, which is what made that song an instant iconic rock classic. The Doors were so prolific at song writing that they recorded 5 (count them 5) classic rock albums of original material in three years. The Beatles, Stones, Pink Floyd, U2, Eagles all the other other top rock bands never even came close to that accomplishment. The Doors were way ahead of their time and their music really is classically timeless, even 55 years later!
@johnplaysgames3120
@johnplaysgames3120 2 жыл бұрын
Any fan of these songs can immediately recognize that they're the studio version but, especially with "Light My Fire," you could see the lip-syncing pretty clearly here. There were several times that Jim threw in an ad-libbed "yeah" at the end of a line which we obviously couldn't hear because it was a dead mic, and he also missed the ad-libs from the studio version in a few places (so we just heard a "yeah" at the end of the line while Jim's mouth was closed). It's a bummer that Bandstand did things that way because live performances (and the unpredictability that came with them) was where the Doors really shined.

The Beatles recorded 5 albums from 1966-68: Revolver, Sgt. Pepper, Yellow Submarine, Magical Mystery Tour, and the White Album (double album). The Doors recorded 4 albums from 1969-71: Soft Parade, Morrison Hotel, LA Woman, and Other Voices. I didn’t see where the Doors recorded 5 albums in 3 years unless you’re including their greatest hits album compilation “13” from 1970.
@patrickmitts4903
@patrickmitts4903 Жыл бұрын
@@straycatttt2766 The fifth album was called Strange Days, their second album, released in September of 1967. My apologies for not getting it right on The Beatles. They were also very prolific songwriters with a phenomenal catalog of music that is certainly generational. They inspired many, many famous musicians to start playing their instruments with The Beatles first appearance on Ed Sullivan! It definitely was a turning point in my young life when I saw them! Their timeless legacy endures and captivates more audiences today than The Doors ever will. I really do admire what they did and I've seen 3 of the 4 Beatles live as solo acts, but I never got to see The Doors live (Morrison died when I was 14). All in all, I will always choose to go to The Doors before The Beatles on a long roadtrip. That's just "my" taste buds, however.

The Dick Clark Show was never controversial and the questions were always easy for the artist to answer very quickly and any chance of something going wrong during an interview was totally avoided especially in the later 1960s with the long haired beatniks and hippies on the show .. It was a weekend TV show aired every Saturday for a daytime TV audience to be shown around 1 or 2 o'clock so it had to be nice and easy .... The Doors were banned from The Ed Sullivan Show because of the word Higher was used when Jim was told not to use it on this same song Light My Fire ,Iricnly it was no big thing to worry about on this show ... The very best TV Live Show is The Midnight Special with reruns from the 70s and it is nearly all real live performances and hardly any tape overs for lip synch

The Doors were without peer -- absolutely singular in their sound and creativity. That whole first album is outstanding. I love how Francis Ford Coppola used "The End" to begin his seminal movie "Apocalypse Now". The napalming of the tree line right as the words "This is the end..." is a cinematic masterpiece. Also how the helicopter rotors morph into the ceiling fan. It's a shame that Morrison's ego spiraled out of control.

Crystal Ship is one of my favorite songs by any artist, so beautiful with evocative imagery. The questions and format were very much of the time so no depth to be had here. This was pop for TV teenage audiences watching at home on their black and white sets. Not a great fit for The Doors but they had to start somewhere. It also wasn't really possible to do live performances then so this was actually the album version they mimed along to. At best you'd have live singing over the album track in shows from this era.

The Doors got banned when they played Light My Fire on The Ed Sullivan Show. The producer asked them to change the line "girl we couldn't get much higher" to "girl we couldn't get much better" because of the TV censors super sensitivity to any drug references. The band agreed and then when they were live on the air they just sang it the original way. Getting banned only upped their cred and increased their legendary status.

That night I set speakers on each side of my bed (Stereo was relatively new and so cool then). I'd never heard the Doors before and had no idea what to expect. But when the needle dropped on the record (you may know that sound) and "Break On Through..." kicked in, I was blown away. I must have played that album 10 times or more that night until I finally fell asleep... I still have that album. It's in good condition, but I still play it all the time. It never gets old as true greatness never does.

There was a lot of talk about Jim's thoughts about death but these two songs and most of the Doors' work are very life affirming! I saw them do these songs in 1967. Robby is a friend of a friend. 🙂

The song “Crystal Ship” is about shooting Crystal meth speed, a crystal ship was slang in the 60s for a syringe & needle, with a dose for injecting the drug. proof? lyrics: “The Crystal ship is being filled with a thousand thrills for another flashing chance at bliss, you wanna cry, I’d rather fly” if that ain’t a speed freak line, I don’t know what is. Listen to the song again with that theme in mind, you’ll see it.

I haven’t heard Crystal Ship for 40+ years and still somehow remembered all the lyrics. The Doors was one of my favorite bands in high school but then they mysteriously vanished from my life. Interesting how time and music flows.

Good Reactions! The Doors music is immortal! Great rare footage of the Doors talking on TV. Thank the Gods for KZbin! Jim Morrison was like Elvis in that they both sang Ballads well as well as Rockers! They were both great singers! And Morrison was a Crooner! Which is a lost art.

Start with the first album and go forward with the trip. We did it on acid 55 years ago which made quite a realization to how we viewed life. Still the best group I believe ever along with the Beatles.

RLB: Dick Clark, the nation's oldest living teenager, never wanted to ask serious questions. It was the 60's, it was about fun. There was the great moment when he asked ? and the Mysterians how they got their name. One of the group said," I don't know, it just came to us ,man". Now THAT was intense.

Crystal Ship, a song wrote, by Morrison, is about a former girlfriend, Mary Werbelow, whom were together till 65', but saw each other off and on till 69', much to the chagrin of Pam Morrison..

That was just how Dick Clark did things. This was interesting to see, since "Light My Fire" got them banned from Ed Sullivan, when Jim was told not to sing, "Baby can't get much higher." and he went for it anyway, knowing it would get them banned from performing on that show again.

Hi Rebeka, Awesome reaction. I too am a huge DOORS fan. IMHO - They are the Best Group from the 6o's. You mentioned Jim's Baritone Voice, Two of his Influences were Frank Sinatra & Elvis. "Light My Fire" is one of the Finest Compositions in Rock music. Keep up the Good work, More DOORS Please. Perhaps you could React to "The End" - (if you Dare)... Or " When the Music's Over" Or "Riders on the Storm"

You understand- the band was miming the songs. Robbie's guitar was unplugged, for instance, and Doug Luban's studio bass part is quite audile in the mix- Maybe Jim was actually singing live, though.

Was knocked out by the album when it came out, such a completely different sound somehow, using all familiar elements. Writing by Jim and Robby Krieger, separately or together was unique and inspired. Two of my favorite songs to play.

Jim Morrison was a zany Cali-surf scene poet from the good old days. He was one wild dude. On stage he what's a complete character. The band had some pretty cool tunes, great music to cruise in you Camaro around the strip in. I had a few cassettes and 8 tracks in my sleeper. Great choice Rebeka!
