One of the greatest songs ever written. The rumor was that Jim wrote this song after observing the twinkling lights of platform holly off Isla Vista beach in California. I was there a few months ago, and it's not surprising to me that Jim was inspired there. Beautiful.

Is the same no one can’t replicate Save a prayer because he experienced that romance with that dream girl. Both songs are haunted but one is beautifully sad and the other one is beautifully happy with dreamy locations. It’s double meaning... morrison did that a lot, like in waiting for the sun.... it’s both literal, to Mary werbelow, but it’s also symbolic metaphor as you pointed out.... morrison at his best, wrote 4dimensional lyrics. They could tell 2 different narratives, yet in a transcending way converge to an even greater meaning... that was the Blake symbolist influence... morrison was inconsistent. But when he was dialed in, he’s mt Rushmore level lyrically in the history of popular music.

In the late 60s, the big Chicago AM station was WLS, but the hip station was WCFL. One reason was the great radio jock Ron Britain, who every Sunday night hosted an underground music show, the Subterranean Circus. At one Chicago show, he had the privilege of introducing The Doors: "Ladies and gentlemen, Jim Morrison and The Doors!" As Ron humbly recounted on air, at set break Morrison, in a high state of dudgeon, cornered him backstage and told him, "Jim Morrison and The Doors?!?!? It's not 'Jim Morrison and The Doors'! If it were 'Jim Morrison and The Doors', there would be five people on stage. There's only four people on stage!" Ron, to his credit, took the correction, and said this increased his respect for Morrison immeasurably. Thanks for reacting to this--more reactions from their first two or three albums, please!

Jamel that "I'll drop a line" used to refer to the writing of a letter as a friend would say to another he wanted to stay in touch with. "Drop me a line" was a common expression at a time when there was no Email. Mailing a letter to a girl, romance I miss. I saw the Doors in 1969 at the Cow Palace in San Francisco, a long story, the best concert I ever saw. The sound system was perfect, The Doors were at the top of their game. Jim Morrison was great.

Back in the late 70's - early 80's, there was a band in the NY area called "Crystal Ship". They were a Doors cover/tribute band. I still remember their commercials on the rock radio stations advertising their shows. They were supposed to play my high school once, but only a handful of us bought tickets, so they canceled. That's the closest I came to ever seeing "The Doors". 😔

sniff My favorite song! In the 90s, it was easy to contact people in the music world and I had a running communication with some of the people in Jim's life. I also wrote 2 poems about him. The Doors was my obsession at the time. Unfortunately, in 1969, when they came to Red Rocks, I wasn't able to see them. Biggest regret ever.

Jamal, another great Doors LP/CD is "Waiting For The Sun" from '68. The great songs from this CD are: 1) Love Street 2) Wintertime Love 3) Summers Almost Gone 4) Unknown Soldier 5) Crystal Ship (was also released on this CD).

"Spoken word with music in the background" is exactly what the album An American Prayer is. They took his recorded poetry several years after he died, and put music to it. Some of it is medleys, but man, it's exactly what you described. I highly recommend "Newborn Awakening" and "Ghost Song" from that album.

I dabbled in writing songs and I never really experienced romantic love so back in the 80s I had written songs that were lyrically aggressive. The first song I wrote entirely was called "Caroline". Caroline was in my eighth grade English class. I played the song for her, thinking she was going to eat it up. Other people loved it and told me I should write more songs, which I did and lost a lot of sleep because I kept hearing the musical hook in my head then when Caroline shot me down in flames I went s little darker lyrically, writing about other things. When I reached the 10th grade I became a "hesher" (a die hard Heavy Metal enthusiast) and concentrated on writing concept pieces. So, I don't believe in romantic love but I was still writing lyrics, which is poetry.

Back in the day, I was not a "Hip" person, so for me the term Crystal Meth was an unknown until years later. I envisioned "Crystal Ship" as being connected to fantasy (cosmic or mythical) or to a crystal ball.

When The Doors recorded their music, they brought in a bass player to do the bass lines, but live it was Ray Manzarek who covered the bass notes using the Fender Bass keyboard. Morrison viewed himself more as a poet than a singer or rock star.

I've always loved this song, and I don't even know what the words are. The SOUND of it is what interests me. This particular song is unlike any other that the Doors ever wrote or sang. It's the weird atmosphere it creates that I find interesting. And I'm not the only one. I actually once was at a "Crystal Ship party," where they just played this song over and over for the entire night.
