Lance Rexington Hy. Yep I think you may be right about this....Ray was a business/Econ major in college and always seemed to be a bit more commercially minded than the rest of the doors. And he often helped fuel the rumors floating around Jim's death, leaving open the possibility that he faked it, thereby ensuring continued media and fan interest in the band.

I think Jim would have hated social media. Just from listening to his interviews from when he was alive, he was always against media and the belief that people lived their lives doing what society thought they should do. I think he literally had mentioned that he thought it was sad and that people should stop and live and not stay behind a television or fall prey to being programmed by society.

Yet aren't we all being hypocrites? What are we watching right now? Is looking at the media or TV really any different than going to a live concert? It's all relative. That's not to say that it's hard to beat the live experience. I do prefer a live performance.

Robert Plant made a reference to "Out here in the perimeter there are no stars" as being great lyrics. Myself, I'm awestruck by four words that sum up the human condiction far better than TS Eliot's “I will show you fear in a handful of dust.” (Ten words). Jim Morrison, "No safety or surprise." Poetic brilliance. There is no safety from death, nor should it come as any surprise when it occurs.

Agreed: The Doors, the Who, MC5, and a few others were "proto-punk," or the precursors of punk. Iggy & the Stooges -- influenced by Morrison, and even on Elektra for their first two albums -- were the first to actually *be* punk. They stood out like sore thumbs, in fact, in the musical and cultural landscape of 1969-1970.

It didn't seem like Morrison gave a cr@p though. He seemed he could take it or leave it but maybe that was the booze. I don't think Morrison could've made it without them. Robbie claims in his book that what Ray wrote in LIGHT MY FIRE was almost totally pure bullshit. More like a novel than a memoir. Likewise, he recounts how Bill Siddons would often visit Danny Sugerman's (who added a lot of his own bullshit to NO ONE HERE GETS OUT ALIVE) house in the late 70s, and find Ray behind the typewriter doctoring the manuscript. Jerry Hopkins tried marketing the book as early as 1976 with no takers. It only got published in 1980 after Danny and Ray filled it with piles of pure horseshit that made it sell. Amazing enough story without all the embellishment, but publishers in the late 70s evidently didn't think so.
