The Dorado

From the 2017 International Fly Fishing Film Festival.
Fly-fisher April Vokey heads off to the deep jungles of Bolivia to try her luck at Spey casting for golden dorado. Her journey begins with a century-old book and a reference to fly-fishing for dorado. Pairing with a Bolivian native, she sets off to explore what the book never managed to achieve, only to soon realize that the truly magnificent journey is the one she is on.

Nicely done! Here in Argentina we have Dorados from Iguazu down to the coast of Rio de la Plata in front of Buenos Aires city. Big 20kg you can find in the north Parana river. Unfortunately, its being overkilled, and its endangered.

I live in SE Iowa. A friend of mine from Utah used to fly fish the lakes around here. People would shake their heads when he rigged up but then he would start catching fish! And yup, catfish would take his flies off the surface.

This is a beautiful video, and speaking as an explorer of Bolivia myself, there are some gorgeous, absolutely untouched places in the Bolivian Amazon (including the Andes! Hey, I'm really proud of that moment (actually one of the coolest moments in my life). I'd missed one about five minutes earlier, then this guy came in solo and tailed. Practiced for two hours with guides taking bets around me as Juan and I made our way to the river. Photographer across us (pause and you'll see him crouched down looking like a rock) has the entire sequence on still photos). No smoke here, friend.

April, Love the great casting and the lovely catch. I was in Bolivian as it's my country of origin. I too was in the search of the great dorado but as luck would have it there were unseasonably rain storms and could not go down the rivers to fish. My question to you is what type of gear did you use and also which flies were successful. I plan on going back in the near future and plan on taking a 10W rod with 650G tropical ultra fast sinking head and intermediate sinking running line. Any advice would be helpful, thank you for the great video and hope to hear back.
