Your harvest of worm castings looks like un-composted mulch to me.The goal is "Black Gold"
@TheWormsEquals10 ай бұрын
I get this comment/question a lot. I overload the bin with far more browns than the worms will consume. Keeps the smell down and gets the most out of them. Then what comes out goes into a bucket and cold composts until it is black gold. Used to separate out the castings, but then realized all I do is mix them right back into my soil mixture of shredded paper, a little clay, a little sand, and castings. So I stopped doing that. If you are harvesting pure castings your worms haven't eaten near as much as they could have because they will continue eating their waste over and over.

Fruit waste can be used without risking fruit flies and fungus gnats. I freeze and thaw before feeding. I also add some mosquito bits occasionally that contain a BT bacteria that kills their larvae.

i,ve always though rice is bad for worm bins. i also freeze all fruit/vegetable waste before it goes in bin-it breaks down much quicker and add some cedar shavings to top layer for the aroma.

your description of worm tea is not accurate. brewed tea is very beneficial.
@TheWormsEquals10 ай бұрын
I didn't say it wasn't beneficial, in fact I make a special brew in jugs that I let ferment for months and spread on the gardens just as whether turns cold. Perhaps I will do a video on that at some point. I said it was a rip-off because worm compost can be purchased at about $.50 to $1.00 a pound. If you put that amount of compost in a jug with water and whatever else you like then let it "brew" for a couple days, you'd have what is commonly sold as worm tea, and is almost nothing but water. That $1 worth of compost did not suddenly become worth $17.95 per 16 oz bottle, or $143.60 per gallon. That was my point. I am all about using worm tea! But anything over $9.95 a gallon is just absolutely screwing someone. Don't you agree?

I appreciate where you are in your learing stage in worm farming. At the same time you offer up several statements about biology as well as a total misunderstanding about worm tea, leading you to the wrong conclusions. I'd be happy to offer some coaching probono if you would like. Consider growing your population through effective breeding and not just improve compost but instead make a product to share with the world around you and change your surroundings forever for the betterment for those future generations. Ps... If i wanted to buy worm tea from your friends who stopped worm farming what do you think their time and effort would be worth (starting from scratch) to make me just 16 oz of worm tea correctly? I know novody who will work for just a few cents an hour.... G How much is the value of your time? Its not the water, microbes, fungi, castings, bottle , shipping, food to keep it fresh that are the ingredients it's also the time, effort and education that goes into making it correctly. To prove this i'm willing to put you to the test! You make me a 16oz jar of your worm tea, ill do the same. We'll have it independently tested and if yours if rated higher than mine ill pay your quoted 'scam price' for a full gallon. But if I win, I get to grow plants side by side to yours and you share the video and and results on your channel...deal? We can even skip the testing if you want and jump right to the side by side? I would love to watch as the results might beneficial or not!

Where is the wormcasting? You dont have wormcasting, you know? Its only your bed
@TheWormsEquals6 ай бұрын
There's a lot of casting in there, they fall to the bottom. Like I was saying in the video I used to take a lot of time and filter pure castings through screens and all of that. But then I realized all I did was turn right around and add it back into some organic matter to create soil. So I stopped separating them that's the only thing.

I totally disagree with you, I have 3, 4 tier tray farms, and i have no smell problems, or moisture problems, if it smells your feeding it too much? My worms finish all the food I give them in 2 weeks. I agree worms follow the water, but they breed like crazy there too. I separate them by moving them down and then i trap them in feeding zones to remove them. The only time I had a problem was when it got too hot and I forgot to place ice pac on top.
@TheWormsEquals5 ай бұрын
Sounds like you go top to bottom the same way a continuous flow bin works. Trays are designed to go bottom to top moving the worms upwards by rotating the trays and putting the fresh food on top tray and getting the worm to migrate up from the lower trays. That's what doesn't work. Seems like you just use a continuous flow bin that happens to be separated into trays. A little more complicated than just a tub but if it works cool.
@nathanfenster34258 ай бұрын
Worm tea is a scam because the market value is way higher than the actual cost of production. When you talk about it here you make it sound like phooey, which I'm sure isn't what you meant. A person can start a whole worm farm for the cost of a gallon jug, that's the scam. However, the benefit of a well-brewed worm tea is scientifically (and for me anecdotally) supported. Absolutely agree about tiered systems though, they make more sense to us than to the worms!
