It seems to me that the main difference between 'roto' and ' 'rotto' lies in the way the 'o' is pronounced. The same goes for 'gato' and 'gatto'. The vowel is a bit longer in 'gato' and not the 't'. I know that Italians maintain to be able to pronounce a plosive (p, t, c, b, d, g) short or long. But how can you make a plosive long?

I'm wondering the same thing. You can only lengthen the vowels before or after.
