Fucking strange thing to say but as a mixed race kid growing up in the metal scene in europe Dave was like a small beacon of hope that you could be accepted on stage if you didnt look the same pasty white as everyone else. Was lucky enough to only experience racism at festivals rather than gigs i played but hearing how chill and down to earth he is in this whole chat makes me appreciate him even more as a human

Dave is directly responsible for getting myself to pick up a guitar at a young age and try and learn to shred like him. What a fun trip down memory lane, as always you are a fantastic host Craig!!

Its so sad that this kind of bands are going extinct. We need them here to inspire young musicians to go this way. Punk Rock, Pop Punk and all this early 2000s genres are so good! We, as a society, can't let go of this kind of sound as it's so powerful (specially for teenagers!) I honestly hope for Sum just to take a break and then do a massive come back, new album or not, just them being around ♡

I absolutely love this podcast! The discussion about credits is fascinating. Back in the day, I was really into researching songwriting credits for bands I loved. This was even in the early to mid-2000s. I was always stunned by how much of the writing for Sum 41's early albums was attributed to Deryck and the manager. As Dave mentioned, Deryck handled all the writing, and I’m not saying he didn’t deserve that recognition. But Dave, for example, brought so much to the table. Just listen to the solo on The Hell Song or the riff from Makes No Difference - Those feel like quintessentially "Dave" moments on guitar. What’s interesting is how bands like Blink and Green Day credit all their members for songwriting. As Dave said, Sum 41 was probably too young and not business-savvy enough at the time to realise how important that was. It’s such a shame. Some might argue, “You don’t make much money from credits.” Well, sure, if you sell fuck all records, it’s negligible. But when you’re moving close to 1 or 2 million records? It kinda makes a difference. Essentially, what this means is that, Dave, Steve-O and Cone were getting paid as ''session musicians'' which seems quite unfair.
