Album rollouts, when done right, make for some of the most memorable moments in music. The Weeknd's rollout for After Hours was very iconic and is cemented as one of the best of all-time for me, even down to him wearing that red suit for an entire year. Rare to see commitment like that to an album rollout anymore.

Gotta give it up to Drake back in 2016 with Views, that rollout was great with all the eyes and "Views" popping up in big cities. Also, the meme of people putting a mini version of themself on something big scaled. Travis Scott's ASTROWORLD gold head was definitely the most unique i've witnessed. The man litterally put the head from his album cover in big cities to gain hype😂. And it definitely worked.

The rollouts are a reflection of the music/art. A lot of albums being released are non-conceptual and just a bunch of singles. Obviously not all but a lot. Tyler created an album to be interpreted and made a bunch of music videos that fit thematically to the album. How many rappers are consistently doing this? Music is being released at such a rapid pace, artists are just rushing to put out music for playlisting and accumulating streams. Conceptual albums with singles that tie into each other have fewer odds to do that.

If you think about it, Kanye never actually gave a date. We got all these dates from influencers. It could be coming out right on time for all we know. Just everything from the visuals to the aesthetics to the GOOD Fridays giveaways to the award show and SNL performances to the lore behind the suits and the random visits to media offices where he'd jump on tables and rap unreleased verses to the Runaway short film to the 5 different artworks to the damn album itself. Everything was just a masterclass in art and after all that immeasurable hype the album itself did not disappoint of course. That will never be topped I think.

The ADHD rollout is definitely a special case. Joyner at the time was separating from his label and creating his own home studio for the long term benefit. I think being independent proved to be more work than he thought initially which was a big reason the album got pushed back so far. As far as the singles, I think that was intentional. He said the album was a social experiment, and it fits the theme of ADHD. I honestly think the main reason the rollout didn't work was the quality of the music itself. If the album's direction and visuals were more on point and really nailed the ADHD message, the rollout would have enhanced the final product rather than taken away from it.

LISTEN: (Joyner rollout) it’s all about taste. The idea of dropping a song a month than putting out the collection as the album has been thrown around lots. In part b/c our attention is so short. Ironically his album is called ADHD. Unfortunately, there’s no spike in attention when you drag it out. the typical “surprise” becomes a let down (especially when it’s not explained) If you drag out singles you’ve gotta keep going or explain!

I think a big reason why a lot of modern day artists aren’t creative with their album rollouts is because their actual album itself has no creativity in it and they know there’s a high chance of receiving heavy criticism that destroys the value of the album across mainstream hip hop.

I like Leave the door open and i didn’t really care for skate that much ( I didn’t even listen to it til a few days later), but making fans wait nearly a year for the album is so annoying. Also, knowing bruno and his team, this album is probably gonna be like 9-10 tracks, and another single is probably on the way before the album release , so when it finally comes out we would have already heard about a 1/3 of it already. The album will probably be great though, I’ve just lost some hype because of the slow rollout.

@@unknownuser491 tbh I wrote my comment, then saw the post that supposedly the album will come out only in January of 2022. Yo guys I’m an artist that is currently making my first project. My name is Roberto D’Agostini. I don’t know when it’s going to be released. But the topic these guys have addressed is exactly why I want to make music. I see the gap in the market, the whole thing is off balance. And the more and more of these videos that come out the more and more people will become aware. Im going to go on a long bit here: Essentially here’s my take, It’s everything. The whole business. All the individual factors that make up the music space. Streaming, hip hop becoming the biggest genre. 2010-2018 imo was the run of hip hop. 2019 was the first dry year. In no particular order: Frank Ocean finessed his label Russ was massively independent and good for him but he can’t make a cohesive story driven project which is where the real gold is. Logic completely fell off and released projects just to get out of his contract. Drake is releasing cringe after cringe because he’s also tied to a contract. Kendrick went down some pseudo intellectual rabbit hole and just took a massive trauma shit on horrible beats. Tyler is screaming over sick beats like he always does And Kanye made a pointless project just because he wanted to flex but it was bloated and he is so beyond music at this point that it felt so crazy to listen to a 30 song project from the one and only genius who made 7 song projects in 2018. Frank ocean (this is recent) thought the single distribution model (the way Russ releases his music) was the next wave. And the the pandemic hit and he was like nag fuck that Albums are the shit. Industry plants like ice spice, Harlow (didn’t use to be because he worked with his friend but he is now) and lil nas x promoting gay shit equivalent to Sam smith that comes off as disgusting and not beautiful. J Cole was the only one I think who has had the best project so far. ( the off season) but he definitely downsized and didn’t do a rollout but put out a short behind the scene doc and had some decent music vids. But yeah this is a critical view of someone who is looking at this from a business standpoint. Essentially if all goes well my project will come across to the listener as a serious, reflective, growth oriented journey, that has a cohesive sonic experience grounded in solid musical ability. The aesthetic will be my own take on J coles 2014 fhd Logics under pressure Kendrick’s Tpab and Mac millers good am gambino BTI But yes, there is this “void” that only people who truly truly care about the art form can fill. People who are here to tell stories. And care about the listener on a completely individual level. I have studied music theory, my instrument, album structure, story structure, rapping, lyrics writing, sound design, etc. I can’t say how excited I am to execute my vision. I love the music I make. And one day the world is going to hear my story and love it. And hopefully if I am or if I’m not the first person to swing the direction of hip hop (the best current genre) back to true art I’m going to love it either way. Robbie out

One thing about the Joyner rollout, As a fan of his I wasn’t a fan of it. That being said, releasing 9 singles made each song their own moment and gave them their own opportunity to shine. It did great things for his overall streaming numbers. He did then release another album shortly after ADHD, it’s called Evolution and arguably better than ADHD. I don’t think he was signed at the time of ADHD I think it was an independent and conscience effort to build numbers through an experimental release method. The rollout is supposed to create an experience. Not just the body of work. Every time you would listen to After Hours or just look at The Weeknd, it felt like you would transcend into the album and their perspective. Nowadays if feels like artists are just focused on the body of work rather than the experience. The Weeknd and Tyler the Creator are basically the best at the moment. Let’s see where it goes with Kanye. Let’s not forget back in the day with like MBDTF and Graduation, Kanye pulled off a madness with those rollouts. Kendrick is also a GOAT in his rollouts. It feels like artists chase that billboard 200 no.1 album stimmy and disappear

The way these two talk about Drake OMG😂😂😂😂 They sound and look like Stans. The smile on their face and glow on their eyes as soon as Drake comes to the topic is super hilarious lol

A good rollout is when an artist knows they have the ability to maintain the experience and prolong it as much as possible. That IGOR experience was something else. That blonde hair, the performances, almost perfect

G-Eazy These Things Happen Too,the worst rollout for an album i have ever see and with that being said it's still didn't drop It,but it seems like that the rollout is kinda getting back.

I don't care for rollouts personally, Tyler does a really good job on that though always being super creative, but I'd rather get a single or 2, an album date and it's cool for me. Kanye has been making lots and lots of noise with this rollout and I might say it's working, he has a lot of attention, but it's pissing off a lot of people too, me included (it's not like the record will be top 5 in his discography anyway) it's not funny anymore, just drop it already, you know what I mean?

LISTEN: (Joyner rollout) it’s all about taste. The idea of dropping a song a month than putting out the collection as the album has been thrown around lots. In part b/c our attention is so short. Ironically his album is called ADHD. Unfortunately, there’s no spike in attention when you drag it out. the typical “surprise” becomes a let down (especially when it’s not explained) If you drag out singles you’ve gotta keep going or explain!

What did you guys think of Isaiah Rashads THB rollout? He had that sort of predictable and generic rollout you guys talked about in the video. Previewed some stuff over the course of a year and then announced a title via social media, tracklist, that was basically it. The album did well but I found it to be super bland/boring

Culture 3 was one of the best albums that year !!! Migos was everywhere with performances, interviews, etc…my only complaint with Culture 3 is that they didn’t put the singles that came out before Culture 3 on the Deluxe.
