If you’re questioning the “why” of Ark, just read the explorer notes. They’re all on the wiki and they provide all the background knowledge about why you’re on an island, why there are Dino’s everywhere, what the obelisks are, and why everything takes a futuristic turn after the Aberration DLC. The KZbinr NeddyTheNoodle does really awesome videos that tell the story of Ark and I can’t recommend him enough if you want to nerd out about the lore.

I prolly got a bunch of *thousands* hours or ark mobile, im mainly playing mobile games cuz i ain’t got the money for consoles or a pc. The first problem with ark mobile is that I’ve never seen a game with so much hackers, literally more than 50% of the players in multiplayers r using hacks. The second problem is that u can’t have a private server with ur friends for free. The third and i think maybe the biggest ark mobile is the worst optimized game ever (literally), i own a 2017 iPad Pro (i was playing ark in like 2019-2021) and even if the lowest graphics (it makes the game looks super bad) i still used to crash, i had a friend that bought the best mobile device for gaming and he was crashing too (even with low graphics). The fourth problem is the bugs, ark mobile has soooo much bugs and glitches, some r useful but some can also break the game and ur device.

Ah good old Ark, A very fun game and to date still one of my favorite games to watch video's about (i was absolutely obsessed with it when it just came out) That Ark music made me feel so happy and sad at the same time. Performance issues really are what hurt the game. And some of Wildcard their ideas were.... interesting. Still a fun game from time to time though. Also Genesis part 2 looks a lot like Apex Legends Maps lol

I will say this. Ark is absolutely a different beast than what it started out as. But, if you're a new player, or have no pre-conceived notion of ark, it all works really well and feels natural. Just like minecraft used to be a survival game but slowly morphed into a almost purely sandbox one, ark is not about dinos anymore. Playing through the game fresh really makes it feel legit and it all meshes quite well. From the start, it is made clear that the "weird" aspect of the game is there- you'll very early on see one of those Tek dinos or find a Rockwell note- so later on when it does go off the fucking deep end it all feels very natural. It has a perfectly sensible progression in game, just not in a meta sense.

Yeah the only time my alpha tribe ever got raided was by undermeshers. On Legacy servers a mega tribe came to wipe the server and wouldn't even touch our base (that wasn't even alpha), because before the turret cap, we had so much turret density that it would cause you to freeze at 1 frame per minute if u triggered the wall. + the server was getting ddossed daily.

Yeah Genesis story line was a little hard to follow, but it did give a lot of the answers to the lore of the game. Like yes extinction was earth just very small pockets of it were habitable and your character was sent there to send the signal to the arks to allow them to descend back to earth because after Aberation you find out the arks malfunctioned and they were designed to help re-terraform earth to make it livable again and the ark trials were designed to prepare the human race for the world they’d have to reclaim. You also find out the human race destroyed earth with element based weapons and with the use of elemental technology they were able to clone the Dino’s, but not only that but change their DNA so they could be capable of being tamed. They later weaponized the clone Dino’s which the results were the tek Dino’s we see in game. The war was set between two factions of the human race and after realizing earth was on its last breath they called a cease fire and attempted to find ways for the human race to survive the end of the world. One group created the arks after the Genesis ship left earth leaving the rest of humanity behind. I believe Santiago lead the group that created the arks because he’s the only person who’s been cloned on both the ark and on Genisis. The Genisis ship had access to more tek and DNA which was hand picked to be the best of the best of the human race of that era where as the Ark project was desperate and used DNA from all eras of human history which Santiago was considered a genius and a weapons expert so he made the cut for both. The end of extinction Helena as a homodaous is able to establish a connection to the Genesis ship for a brief period of time when sending the signal to the arks to inform them its safe to begin the terraform and notices the corruption on the ship. Which is why she creates HLNA a AI copy of herself and creates a clone body of your character on the genisis ship and uploads your consciousness to the clone with HLNA since the real Helena needs to stay on earth to help the human race rebuild. You find out on Genesis Rockwell was able to upload himself to the ship from Aberration and was planning to use the Genesis ship cloning machine to recreate humanity in his image. Your character manages to disconnect the uncorrupted ring from the Genesis ship before blowing it up and set its target for an unknown planet which activates the awakening process for all the sleeping clones to be launched towards that planet. Which from that point begins the Ark 2 cinematic trailer. Basically at arks current stage the human race exists both on an unclaimed earth that’s been terraformed and an unknown planet which ark 2 will take place on and slightly explains the strange humanoid things we saw in the trailer. Most likely natives to that planet I’d assume and the dinosaurs came to that planet with us from the crashed Genesis ring and would be considered an invasive species there.

They really moved away from the progression of the beginning and middle part of the game, the best parts. These days you do one note run and you're level 80 in 3 minutes. People get tek in one day on servers that wipe because it's been made so easy with the new maps. Really hoping the primitive theme of Ark 2 will revive the game.

the thing that had always put me off from the game was how wonky and janky it all looked, and heard stuff about performance issues but instead of focusing on all that they just kept making DLC which would make more money anyways. Seems like many games nowadays tend to fall into the feature creep hole easily. Even something more polished and widely praised like warframe has fallen victim to it.

Honestly Ark Genesis is alot to take in if you just look at it from the outside, and maybe if you try jumping into a multiplayer server. But if your playing solo or with a small group of friends then its all sorta introduced slowly and is explained away by lore stuff you can find littered around. It still takes a good hundred hours to get all the way to that end game and by the time your going and fighting the end boss of genesis 2 it all just feels normal. And if you really want to just stick to the primitive stuff. Well you only get the fancy stuff by beating the bosses so uh just dont do that/dont spend the stuff you get from them. All the genesis stuff is just more end game content that extends a playthrough, and you sorta gotta go somewhere after getting modern assault rifles Also for the record ARK literally has had a consistent amount of players through its entier life span. Had 80k daily peek on launch, 80k in 2017, 80k in 2019, 90k in 2020, and is still at 80k today. Though for whatever reason its twitch viewership is always really really low for how many people are playing it (Usually you have like 10-20% of the active players as twitch veiwers sometimes even more) ARK has like 6k twitch viewers on a good day so it seems like ark just is boring/hard to watch so maybe the lack of vocal community makes it seem alot more dead then it actually is. Your alot less likely to think about/stumble uppon a old game if there is very little media on it

I absolutely loved this game with the original release, the desert dlc with dragons, as you said it was still grounded at that point, hell even when they released the map with griffins and tech armor honestly in my opinion at that point it still felt fair and grounded, tech still makes sense to me in a way and I didn't mind it, after that dlc so this game definitely lost me with every single release after that point, shit went absolutely wild and is not even close to a dinosaur survival game anymore, pretty sad tbh

I used to be a massive Ark Nerd back in the day. Invested about 600 hours into it back in 2014-2015. I tried going back to it a few times but the nonsensical additions to the game detracted the experience for me. As a dino geek , old Ark was all that I ever wanted. New Ark might be enjoyable for others but it's too much for me man.

I played on Iballisticsquid's Bongo Island server back in 2015-2016 when the game first came out. Was a total blast and have friends of 5-6 years who I played with on the server. Getting a new update with new dinosaurs and features made the game fun to play, especially for a 10-11 year old me with the incapability to comprehend how to tame dinosaurs and explore the deep places of the map without help and every new discovery being the best thing that's ever happened. I can definitely see how Wildcard going bonkers with tech items created some negative consequences. After Squid's server shut down and the game continued to change, Progressing became too easy, and we restarted enough times that we inevitably got bored with the game. I gave up by the time Genesis part 1 released, and for the most part my friends never got interested in part 2. Perhaps I would actually play the game regularly again even with all the tech stuff, but those of us Bongo Islanders who remain friends have mostly moved on to other things, and one by one we are graduating high school or are busy doing other stuff or playing different games, so it's unlikely that I will ever do anything more besides play single player. Maybe if ARK 2 is fun, some will be convinced to play again. I'm glad to see that people still enjoy the game, but I had my fun on Squid's server, and I believe that my time as an ARK player is over. I will certainly miss the good times and memories, and unless I have severe case of memory loss, they will most likely always have a place in my heart.

We all nearly unanimously agree that, while fun, the stuff added from Extinction onward ruined the game and morphed it into something unrecognizable. Abb was a bit of a leap but for some reason most people I talk to still very much enjoyed the map because it was new and refreshing while still feeling tied into the og ark experience.

This is what I’m most irritating games to get into as a new player I never got into it the micromanaging becomes too much at a certain point you have to clock in and do a 9-5 to play this game comfortably I find it stupid that if I log out it’s possible somebody could still come. Give me a hard time like my base being destroyed that’s fine but why is it that my body can be robbed when I leave you how many times I’ve made decent progress and then beach or in the middle of nowhere. One time somebody force-fed me while I was asleep, took my stuff, handcuff me and left me in a cave. I had to leave that server because I couldn’t starve to death. I just took too long. The main story of ARK (At least what i consider it to be) ends at Extinction while Genesis 1 and 2 are more or less a prologue to ARK 2. The game was always a sci-fi game with subtle hints of the big tech. (Like the big floating glowing pillars in the sky and the drops with items in them coming from the sky)

What was interesting about the introduction of Tek is that if you're playing Single Player the Tek tier is so extremely brief until Extinction and Genesis so you have a LOT of time not really interacting with any Tek at all unless you happen to find a rare Tek Dino varient.

Pretty sure Tek was in the series for a long time, it was the hole point to the boss fights way back on the first map. Also always like the idea of being able to go from cave man to iron man as you "got gud"

Given how the game was when I last played it, I'm wondering how much of any of that was completable solo. The devs really liked making new shiny content for massive groups of 20-40 people that somehow had enough time on their hands to upkeep and improve their deteriorating everything. Meanwhile singleplayer pretty much consisted of relying on your hard won tames that would randomly despawn after falling through the map, which they never bothered to fix. ARK was a fulltime job online and an absolute mess offline.

Honestly speaking, I enjoyed Ark for a lot of reasons. I enjoyed playing without the high tech gear. To me, it defeated the purpose of playing the Caveman-Dino-Survival-Game. I don’t play it to shoot a laser gun at a dragon. I play it to ride a Raptor and chuck spears at a T-Rex for food. Or building a raft and turning it into a house-boat and living off of the fish. I liked being primitive and the Primitive + mod-turned-DLC was an amazing step in the right direction. If only they stuck with it and actually cared about it.
