I get the focus is more on Blake Lively, but in the discussion of whether or not the people portraying this film are credible I think it's pretty important to note the writer of the book, Colleen Hoover, shamed a woman for being raped *by her own son*. That could have definitely caused conflict and why her, Blake, and Justin fell off. While I don't know Justin personally, if he is a true advocate and ally as he says he is, learning that Colleen Hoover raised and defended a rapist, would have burned a bridge. I feel that not including that part and making out Colleen Hoover to be someone who's a victim just trying to spread awareness through her books and the books just aren't everyone's cup of tea, is far off from the truth.

As KZbinr Reads with Rachel has shown in her reviews, Hoover often writes the same romances over and over, she doesn’t do enough research, and refuses to put content warnings in her work (despite the upsetting topics) because she believes it would spoil the story. 16:28 The criticism of CoHo's writing isn't exactly that it's 'not everyone's cup of tea'. In many of her other books, she writes romantic relationships where the characters are abusive and her audience is meant to see them as romantic. I know it's a parent's responsibility to check what their teenagers are reading but a lot are just happy their kids are reading at all and CoHo has become popular among teenage girls. Impressionable people, young and old, are going to see these red flags in a relationship and just think they're roses.
@chrisknudsen33953 ай бұрын
Doesn't one of her books literally have an incestuous relationship in it but it pulls the "well they're step siblings actually" card like fr Colleen is just so weird. I don't rlly get what Swoop was going for w/ the whole "not everyone's cup of tea" argument like just because ppl are attached to it doesn't make it good or unharmful, theres a lot of people especially teenagers who get attached to work with rlly problematic abuse representation or that generally portrays serious subject matter in an either shallow or glorifying way. Maybe it makes them feel seen and comforted in the moment but rlly people deserve better fiction that doesn't spit in their face. They should seek out better material instead of uplifting something that only serves to hurt them and other victims.

I am team no one but I heard Justin was abusive and I believe it. I have found people who insert themselves in the public like these saviors of victims are most of the time, doing so as a pr stunt. Yet the internet in all it's wisdom will come up with every excuse why Blake is evil. None of the staff or cast speak to him, because Blake is a diabolical cult leader. She has brainwashed the entire set of the show that Justin is bad. It can't be because he actually has issues. And he's redeemable imo, but the fact that he launched a preemptive strike in order to paint her as a villan reveals all I need to know about the person he wants to be. I was a victim of horrific things. I wasn't at the movies crying about being triggered or upset because some Hollywood actress didn't play therapist. I wanted to die. I begged to die until I realized that I had the power to leave. I am so grateful that Blake Lively is tone deaf because shes never experienced abuse. I thank Jesus for that!!! As a matter of fact, I have more respect for her for staying in her lane. She is my therapist, preacher, teacher, mother, sister, etc. She is an actress. She played a role. She did her job. She does not need to advocate for anybody nor filter strangers triggers. If more celebrities were like this the world wouldn't be so divisive. It's not her job to make certain you're comfortable. The movie is based on a fake character and she did her job. Who cares? Who cares? What real victims actually care? They don't because they're too busy carrying the weight and damage of what was done to them, thats heavy enough. Everybody has ptsd now, everyone is triggered. It's shameful. Most people have no idea what being triggered looks like. It's definitely not picking up a camera to complain about some Hollywood actress... And you wait. It will come out about who Justin truly is. This was PR campaign because there are many rumors about his borderline abusive behavior. You'll see.

honestly, the issue isn’t even the book itself - it’s the casting choice. justin could've done so much for dv survivors and he really cared. blake lively is talented, but she just doesn’t fit the vibe of lily bloom from the book. it feels like hollywood went for big names rather than sticking to the raw, relatable essence of the character. coleen hoover’s story deserves a real, grounded portrayal, and i’m not sure this casting does it justice., it’s not the book that’s the issue - it’s how hollywood is handling the adaptation. it ends with us resonated because it told a painful, authentic story about resilience and healing. but casting blake lively changes the tone completely, making it feel less raw and more polished. by prioritizing star power over character accuracy, they risk losing the very heart of lily’s story. fans wanted to see the lily they connected with on the page, not just a famous face.

I’m not surprised Colleen Hoover was on the Blake side of the press tour. She always promotes her books as romances. It was so triggering having Colleen talked nicely about. I read one book of hers and it triggered my PTSD HORRIBLY the way she romanticized violence! A dude rapes his romantic interest and somehow it’s written like it’s Romantic that she doesn’t stop him and he keeps going? What the hell?! Yet it could have been focused on how women will freeze in these situations and how it’s not their fault this happens.

Yep. Read this book a few years ago, and i couldn’t believe what I read. It felt very weird… am I supposed to like this story line? Am I supposed to find this… sexy and desirable? And I closed the book and never looked back. I knew it was very toxic and I do not want to read any romance that thinks that those things are okay. If it’s meant to be a cautionary tale, the characters or at least the way she tells the story should be clear enough to the readers. Hers was not.😊

Just a little "fun" extra tea on the Boone Hall Plantation, part of touring the slave cabins includes an audio tour which is, for lack of better words, whitewashed with a power washer. Inside one of the slave cabins, one of the audio recordings talks about how small animal bones are often found inside and around the cabin. It explains how slaves would need to sneak out in the night to capture small animals to eat. The audio "conveniently" leaves out the teeny tiny detail how if these people were caught sneaking off they were most likely severely punished. The audio then even has the audacity to end with something along the lines of "so it turns out slaves might actually have eaten more calories than their white owners". The audio completely leaves out how slaves were FORCED to do this to SURVIVE because, oh yeah, they were doing all the labor of the plantation! The location sharing response is even more baffling in light of the allegations in the recent lawsuit. I understand that an abusive work environment is not the same as DV, but there is enough overlap in what she alleges took place that it’s hard to understand how she could be so flippant to other victims. Of course no victim is ever required to disclose and the interview probably isn’t the appropriate time and place to talk about what happened during filming, but it’s hard for me to square her behavior here with someone who had so recently endured the claims that are in the lawsuit.

Stuff like this is very real, and I hate it when I tell someone I can't watch X show they recomended because of Y reason and they act as if I am making something out of nothing.

I honestly never understood why Colleen Hoover was so popular on booktok. I'll admit, I was influenced to read a lot of her books and disliked all of them. I kept trying to give her a chance because so many people seemed to like her books. I felt like I was going crazy, like I was the only one who didn't like her books. It's honestly a relief to know that I'm not the only one who was put off by her.

The online book community has so many people speaking up against her books. Caleb Jacob here on KZbin was the first person to bring her to my attention. His last video was his online “beef” with her. Funny kid, shame he doesn’t have time to make more videos now. I also like Alizee, who makes in depth book reviews, going chapter by chapter. Her Colleen book ones are great because I don’t have to read them and she reads aloud most of the books anyways. In one of her reviews, she mentioned that Hoover books are liked by people who didn’t have a fanfiction phase in their teens and it suddenly made so much sense to me. Colleen Hoover writes the way teenage girls write fan fiction (I should know, I was one of them.) It’s something one outgrows when they read more. Unfortunately, Colleen has been writing for about 12 years now and all her books sound the same. It makes me wonder if she even reads in her spare time.

I didn't know this movie was about DV when I kept seeing ads for it until the backlash after Blake's interview. I got out of a DV marriage - took years to leave. Took even longer (just a few months ago) to cut off all contact with my ex-husband. If I went to see this film in the midst of trying to heal, I'd have been a wreck and maybe relapsed back into alcohol. Good thing it was advertised as a romcom and I hate romcoms.

1:19:17 so.. hot take. I'm a DV and SV survivor. I think they should have searched for a survivor to portray Lilly. Cause only we know what it's like. And this is what happens when you cast someone with no sympathy, or even empathy. It feels like it's a joke to her, quickly money.

Personally, as a survivor of DV and generational cycles abuse, I knew right away after watching the preview of the movie that there would be some abuse in it. There were *subtle* signs that were obvious enough for me to notice and not be so shocked when I saw the movie. The movie’s actual writing (unrealistic and at times very very problematic) and the drama surrounding the making of the film is what shocked me more than the actual film. I will say, it was IRRESPONSIBLE AS ALL HELL for there to be *no* trigger warnings before the movie or in previews.

Blake completely butchered the promotion of this movie and spat on all of Justin’s hard work and effort. The only thing he did wrong was casting her as Lilly Bloom. And also, Colleen can go Eff herself for defending her SAing son, and just brushing off the DV. It’s crazy that she used her experience from her parents relationship and still completely missed the mark on making victims feel seen. She just made this book as a cash grab. Justin was just trying to portray victims stories to bring awareness. I hope he gets better press and casting for his next movie. I hope he gets another movie. He’s one of the good ones.

Why I don’t like Coho but there’s nothing wrong with liking her books (spoilers) 1. (As others mentioned) Defending her son committing SA on a girl at 16 y/o 2. In her book Nov. 9th: she romanticizes a guy burning the main character’s house down, leaving her with scars, s*xualizing those burns, possibly SA and so on 3. In the sequel of it Ends with us, Lily allows her abuser to coparent her child after all the actions in the first book/movie 4. Nearly all/pretty much all of her female characters have little to no personality. Their lives pretty much doesn’t matter except for traumas and men. Again. Nothing wrong with enjoying her books but I personally don’t but I don’t like this trend in booktok where we just like toxic “romances”. Especially the “dark” ones like Haunting Adeline. There’s proof this desensitized smut does stuff to people’s brains y’all. Personally Colleen isn’t for me and imo her romances would often be better as thrillers like Verity.
@kiryn59773 ай бұрын
5. her very first book Slammed had a high school student dating her teacher, and this state of affairs was accepted and romanticized; they are the main couple and live HEA and as an addendum to #2, what infuriated me the absolute most is that the book ends with HER being forced to apologize to HIM for being upset about what he did to her and that he lied to her about it for years; the fact that her own mother shames her for not wanting anything to do with him.......ooh, my rage will never end.
