The downfall of driving games...

Discussing the lack of drifting games being developed. What is the reason for us not seeing a lot of drift games pop up? The main games for drifting are still CarX as well as Assetto Corsa which is not even a drift game, just can be used for drifting. As drifting games are profitable, we should be seeing more of them pop up, right? So where are they?

I would think that the reason why they don’t make many drifting games is because of the sliding physics being hard to replicate. And then even after that they would have to create force feedback for the wheel players and force feedback can be buggy in any game even forza

As a developer, making car physics is very hard in itself, let alone making the car go sideways. I'm still trying to make a game, but being an indie dev, it's pretty hard to make sim quality handling, so I'll stick to arcade physics. I'll let you know when i finish it. Don't expect too much though :)

You need to be somewhere around the aerospace engineer level to even start dreaming of recreating non-linearities of the car dynamics. Same thing with flight sims: it's not too hard to model more or less steady flight, but start increasing the angle of attack drastically and things get out of hand (mathematically) right away. Ironically, both drifting for cars and gyroscopic maneuvers for aerobatic planes are considered nothing more but useless, flashy moves - and yet they require much, MUCH more complex physics and math to even hope to come up with a decent model.

I think it's a combination of it being more profitable if you expanded the focus from drifting to include others as you mentioned, and also because drifting will require a much more complex physics system. If it is off, it will get critisized for being too easy or too different. It will require lots of work to get it close to real life or mimic it to give players a more authentic feeling.

There can be alot of reasons as to why none is devloping, but the most I can think of is, 1: No mainstream drifting game has ever blown up and shown any possible triple A companies that hay this can make lots of money within X and Y time frame. Look at fortnight, soon as it was big and showed that it made lots of money alot of other companies were like; Yes, Money.

@@restautama Even then, most companies are publicly owned by investors. So if the investors say they don't want to. That's the end of it. Programming in general is extremely difficult on an extreme level. mostly all triple A games these days go over 1 mill. But almost none has truly gotten the peak formula for drifting game. So for some new to come to the game will be high risk with unkown rewards.

I play mainly assetto and used to play a lot of carx before getting a wheel. cant drive worth sh*t on wheel in carx for some reason. But i think what you said is true about the profitability and market size. Full race games can tap into the older market when drift is still relatively new. I don't know though, either way I'm still going to keep it sideways

I agree with everything you said, the real reason because a lot of companies don't make drift games/racing games it's because they are really hard to do. The physics of car games (especially drift games) are a lot challenging to do. if a company new in the car videogame scene will spend a lot of money and (if the game won't get success) they'll lose money.

i kinda dont want just a drift game, i want it all, i want a good racing game, with good wheel support and physics, great costumization and a good and car culture focused story mode. we have lots of games where we're able to drift, but none of them has it all. i believe thats because as you said drifting is no longer a niche, but drifting games in comparison to AAA games are still not profitable enough to make big companies invest on it

I tried some basic ones a couple of times in Unity. Tyre /grip /spring Physics are a challenge. Wheel colliders work well for basic car mechanics but for drifting and more realistic handling you need to implement alot of stuff yourself. Like some kind of LSD or the turn-in feels wrong even just for normal Driving , engine models rpm/ torque curves, downforce. Its a verry delicate concentrated balance between al the variables of the car and surface. Like increase weight you have to retweak spring , power , steering ratios possibly risk having to retweak everything. You have to really understand the car mechanics / physics on some level too. More casual games have these balance challenges more spread out health regen vs enemy attack dmg, and they feel not instantly broken when it isnt perfect. Its a simulation easy comparable to other ones or even the real thing. Doing the forcefeedback seems alot of work as well, challenging to have support for all the different wheels. Interesting car AI or Online if you dont want to feel alone while drifting are not simple either. Ontop we need big maps that stream /render easily that run at high fps. Nice engine sounds on different gear , different engines , rpms and speeds and finally its hard to improve on whats out there already / have a new interesting approach. ... but its doable. As a child, I played hundreds of drifting games and I think the most enjoyable ones are carx drift racing and torque drift. But I think carx is harder. because when a new car is bought, it starts from the street level and it is very difficult to earn money. Torque drift can be the same as carx, it just takes some time. I usually play torque drift and still continue and of course the developers spend a lot of time making these games and in my opinion, tastes and colors cannot be judged. Ive been on CarX from mobile to console. Honestly one of my favorite as far as drift physics and customization. Online play so you can tandem with your friends as well as being Sim racer compatible. Im currently running the logitech g920 in xbox and havent had any issues

I think your right that its better for a developer to not focus everything on one specific thing like drifting. Just look at CarX constantly upgrading their physics to make the cars handle better so it's at least alittle easier to do grip racing and drag racing. I remember playing D1 GP back on the PS2, it was good one as long as I remember! Other than that, I always jumped into Gran Turismo, chose a car and did the "timed laps" but with my own twist such as drift through the whole circuit without spinning etc. It was the closest I could get to something which felt real.

We dont have more drift games is because of the assets and cars. Before adding a car to a game, you have to make a deal with the company. An deal that is usually expensive. Also the time it takes to create car models, which is going to take a lot more money. People want high quality assets and maps along with supras and rx7's, and for a small games company, that just isnt possible.

Honestly I feel like if formula drift was made into a game it would do really well. Make it story driven to where you can pick your team and work you way up to a championship and try be the best. Or even be able to make your own team while trying to earn sponsors and make a name for yourself. Can start at the bottom tier of drift event and work your way up. Incorporate the rules and make it difficult by trying to fill zones and hit inner clips. And if FD themselves sponsored it it would draw more people into the sport. I feel there’s a huge opportunity to be made but no one is willing to take the risk.

Hobbyist tire physics developer here. There are tire physics equations on the web to achieve this (even for the FFB output), where one car can do both grip and drift depending on how you drive. There is a lot of time associated in learning this, and it can be like subjecting yourself to an undergraduates worth of study if you choose to go the realistic route with real units of measurement.

We actually have quite a few drift games comparatively speaking, but the reason it is on the thin side is a similar reason to motocross games, the physics are some of the hardest to program, and the following just isnt there, motocross, motogp, and car games are the hardest to make, and also have the lowest following

A bit late but as a developer myself and after tried creating some "drift" games, the main problem is achieving good drifting physics, and if u use a more "newbie" engine like unity (i believe it's the same carx uses) it's even harder, ffb it's also something hard, specially with the ton of wheels out there, for example, i had a logitech g29 that i was able to just install a plugin and have FFB working, but for other wheels the steps wouldn't be that easy, that's the main reasons, Graphics you can achieve good enough graphics even on unity, maps and cars you can extract them from other games like GTA, Assetto, etc...

Having played Unbound, it is a good arcade drift game, you can enter and leave drifts at will but still break traction if you corner too hard. There are two types of drift, the first is to double tap the brake or accelerator and turn whilst doing so, causing the wheels to break traction and you begin to drift gradually at first until you're full on skidding. This has the benefit of not washing off a lot of your speed but isn't instant enough if you wish to quickly course correct your racing/drift line. The second is power sliding/drifting, in where you yank on the handbrake to quickly and violently slide into the corner where upon letting go of the handbrake you can then power on and drift as normal. This has the benefit of being instant drift that can forcibly keep you on the racing line but you lose massive speed in using it, think of it as an emergence drift. Not sure why everyone expects an arcade game to have driving physics like a simulator, maybe wash over of lack of games that offer such type content so they bring their unreasonable expectations?

carx has time attack modes, and also tuning for regular racing. which is actually opens carx to many other players besides drifters. I've seen quite a few drag servers, time attack servers, and actual racing servers. If other companies could copy this formula and keep it a drift game, they will be making big money.

I can drift in Horizon 5 with a well timed press of handbrake button. It also helps having a 1200 AWD 68 Mustang. Drifting gets boring after a while

I've also thought about this a lot so I'll give my unity dev and computer/car nerd perspective. Making good proper and fun drift physics is very hard (for any controller or level of realism). It requires advanced knowledge of computer programming, car mechanics and car dynamics. Even if you buy some already implemented physics plugin you still need to know how all the parameters affect everything. There is little overlap between people with that knowledge and game developers (they are better off in sim/irl racing or automotive design). Irl/sim drifting experience also helps a lot. There is also a lot more of creative freedom when conveying drifting on a controller and making an assist than for racing games. example 1 player: imma push the stick right racing game: k turn right example 2 player: push stick to the right drift game: turn right? initiate drift right? understeer right? actually depends are we drifting already? rotate car to the right? increase rotation speed? increase drift angle? hold drift angle? how much lock? what do you actually want the car to do?? When making the controller assists there are also lots compromises to be made: how configurable is it for the user? how smooth and satisfying vs twitchy and responsive do we make it? Should we script input scenarios or add extra magic stabilizing forces to make it easier at the risk of it feeling canned? source: I work in Unity, played around with some paid car physics, also did some from scratch. I've read a lot about physics models in current race sims. Into sim/irl drifting.

In my opinion partly what i believe it is cuz of game like torque drift. I heard from a good few people like talking about drift games that they see on steam and say "oh i'll prob have to spend 100 euro more" Which makes me believe it just holds a bad rep. I like your channel but i am part of people that prefer drag racing or old normal racing than drifting on games, in fact i think that the cars oversteer to force a driftiing is bad on some games (like Grid 2 or NFS post-2015), most of times, i prefer a grip fun over drift, even in some games (like FH5) i use some drifts setups

a huge downside to companies going for overall drag, drift and racing in one instead of one of those fields is that they don't do specialized parts. Cut bumper? Only with mods. Speed holes? Only with mods. Big fat drag tires? Mostly only with mods. That's why I like carx drift racing, has some proper drift parts instead of universal ones

I would say one reason for not many drifting games made from scratch is it's more effort. It's easy to make a car go "vroom" in a straight line, but it's more code to make a car go "screeeech" sideways, since there's more physics involved

I think expanding from just drifting to other categories is a nice idea, but trying to do an all in one "do anything/everything" type of game usually doesn't turn out too well. I think it'd be better to start out in just one category, and get it polished and perfected before moving on to the next. After all, a game that's subpar in 4 or 5 categories is certainly less fun than one that's great in 1 or 2 lol

If they could transfer that to console and enhance the graphics and install a lot more mods like different kind of engines. Man I think it could be good. I think the reason why there is no drifting games is that the physics, graphics, steering wheel/controller supports and creating everything takes so much effort and if it doesnt turn out to be good they wont make profit of the game.

my first thought would be that people who want drifting games or just car games in general love the idea of it being realistic or as accurate to the real thing as possible but actually getting into the nitty gritty of the physics turns everyone away , hens why beam mg is becoming better and better at doing racing and drifting since their only focus is the physics which racing drifting and all the other things benefit from

My idea was racing game where you choose bike or car to buy new or used, and then modify it by working or win races or maybe…. Ask dad for money, then modifying is manual and you have to wait for parts that you order but depends on who you buy it, like you bought bodykit from japan then the shipment would take 5 day irl or buy used for cheaper and fast but it doesnt mean it wont broke. That just my idea but i cant make it

i have the same fear that carx street will not be good but at the same time after trying the 2 new cars i have high hopes for the handling and physics the sensei for example is the smoothest and most realistic car iv tried on that game so my hopes are still high! just gotta wait till the 13th

mobile came out for carx street some missions are very difficult on mobiles side not sure if it is on the pc

in a virtual world , called Second life , there is a simulated system called D2 spec for drifting cars and car events , best drift ''game '' i ever played , and you wont need to think about a drifting game after that

Because the most gamers who love cars want to find a game that has upgrades , much upgrades, so the people who want drift games are fewer than people who want a semi-realistic game . To sum up , they care more about graphics,cars, upgrades and SOME times simulation driving. You won't see a channel that has played NFS and Forza drifting in the game, they make videos about performance. That's why they don't make drift games, because people want something casual.

My tgought on why is because a lot of racing games have a lot of drift features and gameplay nowadays. Look at Gran Turismo, Forza, NFS and even more hardcore sim racers like the PC franchise, Assetto Corsa and even iRacing. But also keep in mind that not everyone wants to solely drift. Sometimes, we wanna see those short laptimes, 1/4 mile times, see how fast our cars can go in a long straightaway, twisty roads and tight corners, endurance racing, even compete with similar cars on an oval for long periods like NASCAR or IndyCar. Not everyone just wants to drift and those who do are a very niche market

In japan you could get D1GP games for ps2. Its more like a big niche, but its a big niche with a nugget (remember nugget in pokemon yellow) But it must be physics. If the tokyo drift game was delayed for 6 months maybe it could be more polished.

i've heard of some drifting games. the question is: why is there only one notable rock crawling game? "pure rock crawling" from 2020. and i had to wait a long time for that. now that i think about it .. why not make a game with a whole bunch of niche motorsports like mud racing, hill climbing, tractor pulling and the like? i think that would be successful if done well.

I think the reason why there are no drift games popping up are because there are enough games about drafting to satisfy people needs like asetto corsa car X and even roblox has some good games
