Plus there is also Wyrdeer and Ursaluna from Legends Arceus. Wyrdeer being another Normal/Psychic type that is immune to Ghost and neutral to Fighting, that can, as if SV, lower an opponent’s ATK with Intimidate while also raising it’s DEF with Psyshield Bash. As for Ursaluna, it is basically a tank with claws, especially when you take into account it’s access to Guts and Facade in Gen 9. I find it fascinating that the discovery of normal types being immune to paralysis from body slam was only discovered in 2014
@Diembee Жыл бұрын
Many in the RBY community would actually argue that Normal is a better type than psychic in Gen 1. Really the only reliable checks outside of the big 3 consist of Gengar, Rhydon, and Golem, the latter two of which get obliterated by 4 times weaknesses to water and grass as well as an ice weakness which in Gen 1 normal types is a dime a dozen offensive type. Not only was Hyper Beam a terrible threat, but Body slam was considered one of the best most spammable moves in the game as well due to its high damage and paralysis chance. As previously mentioned, most threatening normals had massive move pools including the valuable Blizzard, which as per Gen 1’s mechanics, was essentially a sheer cold followed by a 90% accurate ice attack wrapped into one move.

Some people like to claim that the normal type is essentially the "sound type" which to me is complete nonsense. If anything, I´d argue that the normal type is the type used to represent creatures, objects and concepts that are extremely abundant/prominent around the world. You could classify them more or less like this: "Pokemon that are normal type because they´re extremely common in many parts of the world" (like rats, birds, horses, cows, rabbits, cats and dogs)". "Pokemon that are normal type because of the things they do (or the concept related to what they do) are extremely common" . Like eating, sleeping, having rivalries/natural enemies (zangoose), dancing and singing (meloetta and jigglypuff line), being unable to swim (azurril), digging (diggersby). cleaning (cinccino), motherhood (kanghaskan and the blissey line), being a grandfather (drampa), taking care of injured people (again Blissey´s line), safety measures (like watchog and sentret that is a scout). "Pokemon that are normal type because they´re based on things commonly used by humans". Like toys, costumes, things to sleep well, energy sources (stufful, bewear, skitty, delcatty, helioptile, minccino, etc). "Pokemon that are normal type because they represent something related to one of the five senses". Like watchog and sentret again (good sight), audino (good hearing), Exploud (loud noises), aipom and ambipom (tact), Lickitung and Lickylicky (taste), etc. "Pokemon that are normal type because they represent something commonly accepted by humans as a truth or things that are related to the world itself". Like weather (castform), metamorphosis (ditto), evolution (eevee), gods/religion (arceus), terraformation/movement of the continents (regigigas), year seasons (deerling line), aging (slakoth line,) day and nigh cicle (drampa again), technological advancements (porygon line), etc. If you look well, basically all normal type pokemon fit in one or more of these four categories, which are all based on things/concepts that are present/prominent in many parts of the world.

For gen 1, I've even seen the argiment thrown around that Normal is better that Psychic. Whether or not I believe it I'm still not sure about, but the fact it is as close as it is goes to show the sheer power of Normal types in gen 1.
@matthewkuscienko4616 Жыл бұрын
Personally, I would rate the normal type better than psychic in gen1 overall for 3 main reasons: 1) Hyper Beam could pretty much be tossed onto anything with a good attack stat since it's recharge turn wasn't mandatory until gen2, so long as you knock out something with it. 2) The 3 normal types mentioned in the video in Chansey, Snorlax and Tauros weren't JUST top-tier OU Pokemon in gen1, they were the 3 BEST Pokemon in the tier, and people who play gen1 competitively will often tell you that all 3 are mandatory for your team. That's not to say psychic wasn't good, or even bad by comparison by any stretch, but psychic was also proped up by Mewtwo being the single most powerful Pokemon in the whole game, and with it being banned to the Ubers tier for how overpowered it was; this colored the perception players had of the type, even if it was primarily because they were looking at what it was capable of when talking about the best Pokemon the type had to offer. 3) Normal types having good movepools compared to most other Pokemon of other types also is a big selling point in the type's favor. It's also worth mentioning that even though they didn't have as much special as Chansey did in gen1, Tauros and Snorlax still regularly used special attacks, with the former using them to supplement it's coverage against other Pokemon, while the latter could actually go full special attacker with access to amnesia occasionally.

One interesting thing I can’t help but notice is that despite the growing prevalence of Ghost types, Normal types aren’t growing in prevalence as well what with their powerful immunity to the type and Dark type coverage. I think the stigma surrounding normal types mainly comes from how the games present the typing system to the player. The starters are a type triangle and then all the gyms focus on one specific type. It is generally perceived that type matchups are the biggest key element to pokemon battling. Normal types have basically no advantages, and the most prevalent examples of normal type pokemon are the rodents you find on route 1 and replace as soon as you can
@cubedmelons876 Жыл бұрын
I'd say GSC showcased the type best by giving you a free level 50 Snorlax right after Lance. It's overlevelled at that point, and it's gen 2 Snorlax, so it's perfect to put onto your team to fight Red (who also has an annoying Snorlax). There's also Whitney terrorizing all the noobs with her Miltank.

I have a Furfrou in my copy of X version as my Ace, and it being a Normal type, it isn't affected by Ghost types. However it learns Bite naturally, and Bite being a Dark type attack since Gen 2, it hits Ghost types super-effectively, so Furfrou does have a great tool to deal with opposing Ghost types. The only drawback is that Bite is a Physical attack, so you should watch out for Abilities like Flame Body, Static and the likes.
