I mean, dropping out of Yale and giving everything up including her best relationship (with lorelai) and her dream job just bc some old dude told her she didn't have it, kinda proves she didn't have it.

^^^ this is really what happened. She was so tightly wound about the rest of her drama, that when he said she did not have it she just completely snapped. And the constant cheating on dean is what really tripped my trigger. She really got used to getting everything so that when she didn’t get it she left. It’s like that one girl who leaves the group chat for drama and attention and then asks to her put back in

Itzamara Vázquez I wouldn’t say she was horrible, just that lane and Rory were forced to the background to fit other storylines like her romances. They were always best friends and that never seemed to change but they just didn’t get enough time to spend together which is normal in real life

The fact that they never come back to Lane not enjoying the first time she has sex and the last thing she says about it is that she won't do it again because it was terrible. So she gets married, gets pregnant immediately from one terrible night of sex and it's never resolved? Bummer for her.

The whole town villianized Dean (a boy in high school) when SHE broke up with HIM. Instead of say "hey guys, I'm the one who broke up with him, can you stop being assholes to him" she just let it happen and acted sad that they broke up. That town was always going above and beyond for both women.

@GirlGeek723 She's become super entitled. The girl has an easy ride, she knows she doesn't need to earn money because (1) as always, her family will bail her out; and (2) she has trust funds (didn't Lorelai snr leave her money? And her dad and grandfather are sure to have put money aside for her too). If she was truly 'broke' and needed money she'd take the first job offered to her and be grateful. The 'I'm broke' narrative was annoying. She's regularly travelling overseas, wearing designer clothes, carries a designer bag, chooses to remain unemployed and is in no rush to find a paying job... but is 'broke'.

miek chen I did not like Jess in the beginning while I watched the series when it aired but after I rewatched it, Jess is definitely her best boyfriend. He challenged her and didn’t want her to change but to be true to herself. I think Logan and his friends were her downfall. In the Year in the Life, she regressed. She turned into the spoiled teenager she never was but she was in her 30’s. I felt like every character was a shadow of themselves and instead of quirkinesses, being mean was supposed to be funny.

Lorelai had wealth and a lot of opportunities and she gave that all up for freedom. Rory had EVERYTHING Lorelai had and more; support from an entire town, loving grandparents, good education, a supportive mother, and she even had freedom. And the only reason she gave it up wasn't because she had something to fight for like Lorelai did, but because she was discouraged by Mitchum. If she really did have it, she would've gotten back on her feet and proven him wrong but she cried to her grandparents.

What made it so frustrating for me is the fact that her mother never put her in her place. When it came to the affair, when it came to how horrible she was treating Dean while at the same time pursuing Jess, and then in the revival not really saying anything about her second affair, and then being ok and even making jokes about her treating her sweet considerate boyfriend like crap. Lorelai acting like a real mother (at least when it's important) would have made a real difference for me throughout all of Rory's bad decisions. Also in the revival...her constantly pretending to be broke? She had a trust fund, I'm sure her grandfather left her a significant amount in his will, she has a millionaire father that keeps trying to throw money at her, her grandmother, and a millionaire lover. And when she stopped out of yale, she left rory alone to figure it out but the minute rory decides to go back to take, Lorelai runs and hugs her and all is well, no one is upset, rory never has to make up for anything or earn anyone's trust. My mom and I are best friends. She was 32 when she got pregnant... I respect her more than anything, when I make a mistake I do respect and fully understand her authority. The problem isn’t being best friends with your parent. The problem is not understanding that they are your parents above everything else. Lorelai’s biggest mistake when raising Rory was putting the best friend relationship above the mother-daughter relationship. You don’t have to be a Mrs Kim, but being a Lorelai isn’t the right call either. My mom means the world to me, I have never and will never disrespect her authority. Mrs Kim never knew what was going on with Lane. She never knew her own daughter’s taste in music, the boys she was interested in, her aspirations, her hobbies, simply because Lane couldn’t talk to her. You must be able to talk to your parents. Lane could be depressed and she wouldn’t know. Lane could be suicidal and she wouldn’t know. Lane got drunk and she never knew, if Lane did drugs or had sex as a teenager, she wouldn’t know. They were complete strangers living under the same roof. As a parent, you have to find a balance between Mrs Kim and Lorelai

I think it was really important that Rory got to explore that “bad girl” side of her and that Logan was there to let her do her thing and don’t hold her back or question her as everyone else was doing. I think she had been dealing with such high expectations and pressure (regarding school) all her life that when Mitchum said that to her she herself couldn’t recognize herself anymore, so she needed that outlet, she needed to find out who she wasn’t, what she has supposedly been missing, to find out who she actually was and who she wanted to be. However, I do feel that she never got out of that state of mind and what was supposed to just be a phase that helped her find her true self and grow just developed into her full personality and was never again able to grow past it. Her privilege didn’t let her suffer the consequences of her actions and each time she messed up, she was left unscathed which fed into that entitled bratty persona we saw in the revival. I find it so ironic that her mom messed her up by not messing her up lol.

I think Rory's story is actually perfectly realistic. What happens to Rory is what happens to many gifted kids when they fail. Intelligent people do not know how to cope with failure because they have performed so well through their lives that they simply cannot comprehend the situation. The concept of failure is alien to their minds. I find her short Yale dropout and her story in the revival to be realistic. She simply is unable to deal with her failure and expects to be handed everything. Through the whole show, everyone bombards Rory with comments about her greatness. She cannot comprehend being inferior because her entire life she has heard she is superior. Just my opinion.

Hi! I'm new to the show, now through S3. I find the character selfish and spoiled from the very beginning. When she has the accident with the deer, Lorelei shouts at Mr Charleston and demands special treatment to her daughter. Why? Coudn't she handle the consequences of an accident? It was not her fault, but the rules of the school were supposed to be the same for everyone. She always has her mother or her grandparents to solve her problems, so it's kind of expectable she doesn't take responsability for anything, never. She goes to NY to see Jess and misses her mother's graduation (?) and then kisses Jess while still dating Dean. The main aspects of this character people complain seeing in the Revival could be seen at the very beginning of the series.

Coming out of high school she had this one singular short sighted unhealthy obsession with a dream of going to a particular school - she worked herself to the bone to get there and its possible that once she arrived, she lost the motivation and energy to make it all the way through to her dream career. I see it happen to a lot of people actually - working so tirelessly to keep up a perfect appearance and after a certain breaking point no longer having the energy to be nice and keep up appearances, so you become lazy and a horrible person and you begin to think it's your time to take rather than continue to give.

This is the comment I was looking for. I really related to Rory in many aspects (not the cheating), and while she is deeply flawed, I think that's what made her human. I was also raised in a way I thought I was exceptionally special and indeed was an overachiever in HS... I also changed schools to one we couldn't really afford so I could try to get in a "better" university... I understand where Rory is coming from and the fact that she never really faces any consequences the right way just fuels her entitlement. She's definitely burnt out but too stubborn to admit it. I hope more people realize this and take is a tale of caution instead of just demeaning her character because she stopped being "relatable."

Here's the thing: Rory never had a downfall. She was always a spoiled brat. The very first episode, she has applied to a school that's a half hour away and charges a ridiculous tuition because she doesn't think that her own high school is a good enough alma mater to have as an applicant to Harvard, without even considering how she'll get there or pay for it. She gets in, and the second her stupid dream comes true, she decides to throw it to the wayside for a boy she doesn't know, and whom she could get to know while going to her overpriced far away school. When her mother confronts her about it, she storms away rather than admit that she's being stupid or try to defend her stupidity. This is how they start the show. She definitely gets worse over the years, especially after Yale, but she doesn't start off as an aspirational character. She's always been entitled. She just finds herself entitled to different things over the years.

Then she has to adjust her plans. She can't do whatever she want's whenever she wants. It is when you are young you are supposed to find yourself, travel the world. And if you wanna find yourself I personally feel like you have to be "alone", not commited to someone else. It is when you are young you have the chance to do whatever you want, not have to worry about "what will my husband say if I wanna work in Greece an extra year?".

I’m rewatching Gilmore Girls, and let me tell you, I had forgotten just how much I couldn’t stand Rory. She never took personal responsibility for anything, and no one ever held her accountable for the things she did. Her boyfriends would always get blamed for the bad decisions she made! She stole a freaking boat, and her mom blamed Logan and his father. Her grandparents just the wanted issue gone instead of holding her accountable. I mean, on top of that, after all the bad things she did, people were still surprised when she’d do something else. They’d be like, oh not our perfect Rory? I don’t believe she could do something like that. Like, really? She’s not a good person! I could go on and on, but I’ll leave it at that.

But this is something... I mean, Rory's downfall it's absolutely interesting. It's a progression of a character who fell into her own shadows. It's not something that usual to see in heroines and protagonists; but it's interesting how this can bring us some reflection. We can also assume that she was spoiled, but the thing is that she also agreed to be spoiled... This leads us to a certain thought- Do we have this choice: to surrender to our own shadows or fighting against it? It's under our control? I find Rory's downfall highly philosophical!

Some people still claim Palladino´s choices regarding Rory´s development gave her character a lot of realism and plausibility. To me, Rory´s arc is definetly one of the most disappointing I´ve seen for any tv character ever. There were a thousand of other approaches that Palladino could´ve taken if she wanted to make her characters realistic. That´s why Rory´s crisis in season 6 was very relatable and smart but what they did to her in A Year in the Life was just DISGRACEFUL. And NO realistic but forced to almost tragic levels. Palladino ruined her own creation, and don´t get me started on other characters like Lorelai, Luke or even Logan. I would´ve prefered to keep the original ending. Season 7 was no doubt the worst GG season, but at least it provided us with an open yet proper conclusion for the characters. The reunion was a huge mistake. Still don´t believe how much an author can literally destroy their own work.

I feel like the show was about generational curses/patterns/cycles . Rory ended just like her mom a single mother with a kid that will probably have a not so present father figure. She will probably pressure her child to have a good career just like Lorelai did to Rory since they never got to have that. Rory is such a mess she will probably need help financially from her mother as she's 30 living with her mom just like Lorely needed help from her own parents. Rory is a pathetic version of her mother. Lane also ends up like her mother. Her religious roots make her repress her sexuality and she ends up pregnant the first time with no desire of having sex again just like Ms Kim. I wouldn't be surprised if just like Lane's dad, Zach was always away as we don't see him in the reboot. Lane ends up a less uptight version of her mom. Edit: Same can be said for Dean. He wanted to be like his parents and have a traditional houselode. His relationship with Rory proved to him that there were other options, but he still ended up married at 18 working hard to buy a townhouse for his housewife and their future kids. We don't really know what happened to him after that, but we know he ends up with the wife and kids just like he always wanted probably in a traditional marriage. Same goes for Jess. At first he was going to be a bum like his dad, but Luke became his father figure and now he resembles Luke way more. He is an independant bachelor that has his shit together, but is still and probably will always remain in love with a Gilmore.

I totally agree with this but also I feel like Rory was spoiled from the beginning. She gets into Chilton with no plan or thought as to how her mother was going to pay for it. There's nothing wrong with her wanting to go to Chilton, but you would think since she's supposed to be "poor" she would at least put effort into applying for scholarships, etc. Then while she's at Chilton, everything that goes wrong for her automatically gets fixed by her teachers, grandparents, etc. Like when she got in trouble for sneaking into the school for that sorority thing, she yelled at the headmaster until he completely let her off the hook. Also Dean was an absolutely perfect boyfriend for her, and even though I actually really liked Jess, she treated Dean horribly and should have ended it with him as soon as she realized she had feelings for Jess. Basically, she gets everything she wants throughout the whole show while everyone in her life is constantly praising her for being perfect.

Hear me out: I don't think Rory sleeping with Dean while he was married was a poor writing decision. It was somewhat out of character but kind of brilliant for what it revealed about her (selfishness, entitlement), not only to us as an audience but to Rory herself. It is still within the realm of relatability. Unfortunately, like you said, and I agree 100% that it WASN'T used to progress her character. She doesn't learn from it or pay any consequences. IMAGINE how great of a plot point it could've been if it was the catalyst to a major change in her character, positive or destructive. I wonder if Jared Padalecki's acting schedule had anything to do with the abandonment of this thread altogether.

I agree. Obviously from a moral point of view sleeping with a married man is wrong, but from a writing standpoint I think Rory sleeping with Dean while he was married was good for insight into her character and it could of led to her maturing or taking a look at a really ugly side of herself. If the writers wanted to take this risk with the shows most beloved character then there has to be a really good pay off or at least an interesting one. Instead, there were no repercussions and no growth for Rory. Sure she was confronted about what she did and she felt guilty, but there’s no character development beyond that. Rory continues to date Dean until she becomes interested in someone else and Dean feels that he’ll never be good enough to fit into her world. Ultimately, that plot point was was interesting, but it had a terrible payoff. It all just felt pointless.

I think that the big problem with the Year in life is that it was meant to be the plot of season 7, so it should’ve taken place when Rory was still in her early twenties and recently graduated, which would make it less pathetic and just plain sad. Like honestly I don’t think Rory ever had it in her to become the next Christiane Amanpour (which may I add Jess suggested early on), but if she would’ve had this life crisis in her early twenties and then switched to being an author instead of a journalist (and may I add again, as Jess suggested) her career would not have felt like a big failure like it does now. But also just look at Rory’s upbringing: she was never short of anything she wanted, despite her and her mother being “poor” (as if) and she was praised by everyone around her, literally by an entire town, as if she was some prodigy child genius. Rory was hardworking and probably fairly smart, but I don’t think she was ever anything too spectacular in the big scheme, and going to an Ivy-league school, she had to realise she was just as smart as the next kid. And that’s basically when her downfall began, when she had to leave Stars-hallow and step into the real world, which as it happens, didn’t revolve around her.

That first season, every time she doesn’t get what she wants, she throws a fit, and/or runs to her grandparents, only to use them as a buffer. Lorelei fights with Emily, or just feels lonely and apologizes(???) to Rory, which makes absolutely zero sense. Rory faces zero consequences, and her brattiness is just swept under the rug. Here's what I think: bad Rory is reality and good Rory is fiction. Because after all, let's not forget in a very Louisa May Alcott move, it is revealed in the Netflix series that Rory has written a book titled "The Gilmore Girls" (and Lorelai tells her to "drop the The") So in her book Rory TRIES to paint herself in a good light, or maybe who she thought of herself at the time, BUT couldn't change major life events like not saying "I love you" back to Dean, dumping Dean for Jess, losing her virginity to married Dean, dumping him for Logan, etc. etc. So good Rory is fictional in the early chapters of the book, but in later chapters Rory realizes she has to write the truth which is that she's horrible.

I agree. There was no downfall. Rory's development makes sense. She was always very sheltered by her mom and grandparents, she could not deal with failure. Had she gone to Harvard, she would have never dropped out. She wouldn’t have dropped out because she wouldn’t of met logan or his father, had she met him still, she wouldn’t of dropped out still because she worked hard to get in- extremely hard. So she wouldn’t of taken it for granted like she did with Yale, she got the Yale interview handed to her, since she already had great grades, that was a given, and she is a legacy. Everyone hates Jess, but jess has all ways been better than rory- even when we first met him. Sure his attitude sucked, but he never strung a girl on telling her that he loved her, he worked for everything he has ever done, and he succeeded despite EVERYTHING and EVERYONE who didnt believe in him (exluding rory)- bc even tho luke wanted the best for him, Jess needed to learn what he needed and how to live. It was the same situation as lorelai except less privileged and no pregnancies. Honestly, Jess doged the bullet of dating rory. When I was a teenager, I really loved "Gilmore Girls". But now, 20 years later, I really think that Lorelai and Rory are both selfish. I mean... Remember how Lorelai slept with Christopher, just because Luke did not do what she wanted? How she treated Mr. Medina? She even is a terrible daughter and hurts Emily... Again and again... She teaches her daughter "Well, let's eat Pizza... Every day" They waste a lot of food. Rory is a selfish, little princess... She sleeps with Dean... And he is married. She is a bad best friend for Lane. And I always hated Logan... What an idiot...

I don't mean to judge but...Rory is a head case and should consider going back to therapy. That little stint her character did in season 6 was not enough. It seems, her entire life, Rory has constantly had someone in her ear telling her how amazing and wonderful she is. So much in fact she doesn't know how to handle rejection. Also, was Mitchum wrong? Rory is a great writer, brilliant even. But, is she a journalist? Writing is just one side of what a journalist does. Her choices and actions in the revival coupled with her personality type make me unsure. And her romantic relationships...I think she may have some "daddy issues" as well. Everyone is flawed, but Rory's issues were never fleshed out or dealt with. Thank you for creating and sharing this. I have so many questions for ASP about Rory Gilmore alone. I agree with everything you said about Rory, but Lorelai? I would love to hear your thoughts and opinions on her character.

I'm not a big fan of Mitchum telling Rory "she doesn't have it" after she only worked for him for like a WEEK and not even defining what the heck "it" is supposed to be. Like even if he secretly thought she wasn't talented, he could have given her some initial constructive criticism to work with before giving up on her completely. (Also, this is a textbook description of workplace sexism. Women are usually more likely to be discouraged in their industries than men and being routinely told they aren't "cut out" for whatever it is they are doing.) Rory didn't make it in journalism because she didn't seem to even try.

The show's creator left after the first several seasons, then came back at the end and for the mini-series. What got lost was the original point of contention -- Lorelai's relationship with her mother compared to hers with her daughter. Rory wasn't meant to be the main character, it was always Lorelai. The will-they-or-won't-they was between Lorelai and Emily, not any boy or man. The new writers completely missed that. And it's fine to have a character behave in an unusual way, but CALL THEM OUT. That 70's Show did a better job with Mila Kunis's character, and made Jackie great to watch. She was horrible, but you still loved her because she got called out and showed hints that someday she would grow out of it. It's such a bummer when good actors get hamstrung by lame storylines.

The writers did an excellent job - the cheating with Dean was a perfect climactic moment when we start to actually realise just how entitled she has been the entire time. She was flawed from Season 1 when she would insult other girls who her romantic partners were involved with (E.g. insulting the name Beth when Lane first tells Rory Dean was seeing someone in Chicago, and other little things like this). In Season 4, when the stress of Yale gets to her and she realises she can't actually do everything like she was taught for so long, she returns to Dean as a comfort mechanism as she felt her life was perfect when she started doing well at Chilton and had him. She also of course wants the sensation of knowing that she can have whatever she wants. What's so beautiful about the writing of this show is that stuff like this is interpreted and comes from analysing her behaviour over time, however I wish there was a clearer message to show that young women should of course be confident and believe they can do anything, but not to take it to Rory's point of radiating this 'Golden Child' mentality and treating everyone else like shit bc of it !

I find it Interesting that they spend the whole series trying to parallel Rory to Lorelei.. when maybe she is more like Chris the whole time..like her father she is entitled and easily swayed. He lets his parents ruin his relationship with Lorelei and doesn’t try to take any responsibility for his actions when they were younger. In the episode when his parents join the Gilmore’s for dinner it is evident they blame Lorelei for everything and don’t hold their perfect son accountable for anything. He remains entitled and in the life that Lorelei so desperately runs from. Like Rory he thrives on his parents wealth and status and struggles to deal with his responsibilities as an adult. He is a lousy relationship partner and also attempts to string Lorelei along even though he is in another relationship. He shows little to no character growth over the course of the series ..He is selfish and slow to grow as a person. Though Rory seems to resent him for what he has done to her and her mom ..she seems to share a lot of his personality..as an entitled and thoughtless, selfish person. Though Lorelei is not the perfect person she is not entitled and works hard for everything she has. She is not by any means a perfect relationship partner but she is in love with Luke and works to make their relationship work. Lorelei is shown to have grown as a person..she struggles and has downfalls but she results in being a far more likeable character than Rory because she is not entitled and does not act solely from selfishness.

And all of this would otherwise have been not so bad if it was just a normal part of Rory growing up through making mistakes and eventually realizing her wrongdoings.. but none of that happens. It's worth pointing out that Rory treated her 'friend' Marty like crap. Marty is like a puppy hopelessly in love with her... anyone with a brain can see it, and they have similar screwed up family dynamics, among other things that they bond over. He's always there for her, and she crosses physical boundaries that are not what you do when you think of a guy as 'just a friend,' and knowing that Marty was bullied by creep Logan and his idiot friends, she chooses them over Marty. That's a seriously low move that caused me to lose all respect for her. Then an episode or two later, Rory is drunk, crying on the bathroom floor about Logan not liking her. Seriously, Marty would've never treated her with such disregard that she'd end up in such a demeaning situation. After the crappy way she treated him, I kind of wanted Marty to show up in the reboot with a smart, loving, hot wife who thinks he's amazing, and it be obvious that Marty was too good for who Rory became. Marty would have been perfect for season 1 Rory, Marty challenged her mind because he was intellectually her equal, he was driven to be in college even working extra jobs to pay for it, he made an effort to do the right thing, and was down right sweet. A reboot appearance of Marty in my head cannon would've said, "What the Hell are you doing with your life? Is this really who you want to be?" and he'd have realized he dodged a bullet by not getting the woman he'd pined for. Oh and on the reboot, don't forget that while cheating on her boyfriend and being Logan's other woman, she had sex with a random guy, dress as a cosplay Wookiee, who she was interviewing for an article she never bothered completing. Oh and at the end it turns out she's pregnant by someone, most likely cheater Logan, but it really could be any guy since the Wookiee situation shows she'll have sex with anyone with no thought about repercussions. She just became such an obnoxious selfish person, and the thought of her being someone's mother makes me pity the child.

Her having sex without thinking through the consequences is established in the original series when she moves in with her grandparents, but it's foreshadowed at the beginning when she flirts with Tristan while being with Dean and knowing Paris likes him.

I remember when, at college, Rory confronted the lecturer who was Paris's bf about him possibly cheating on her friend with a redheaded girl & says 'the redhead has fat thighs!.' That would be an incredibly sexist & superficial thing for anyone to say but especially an educated young woman in an apparently progressive drama series that focused on a single mother & her daughter. That's what really put me off her.

Honestly, I know so many people at my school who were like Rory. I envied them for their good work ethic, perfect grades and amazing lifestyle. We were never close but they were nice and people wanted to be their friends. Eventually as went to college they become a whole new person. It was actually the people at my school that acted like Paris, Tristan, Jess and Logan that actually ended up being successful.

If any of you have seen Gilmore Girls, here is my analysis of it: From the first episode I could tell how coddled Rory was, and how she didn't get to have a say towards her future with unrealistic standards. I always loved Jess for challenging her in so many different ways, treating her different than the others by making her face real life situations while he could. Lorelai did fail in not showing Rory mature romantic relationships as her dating scene was pretty emotionally immature as well, much like a teenagers. Yes, her grandparents treated Rory as the golden child. Every time someone criticized Rory about her career, upbringing, or love life she would immediately crumble even way past the time to be an innocent kid or teen. She never really had a chance and yet in many ways all the chances in the world. She had an although sometimes cold and very distant or judgemental mom (paralleling Rorys grandmother) during Rorys big mistakes, Lorelai was also her "best friend", Rory has had extensive emotional support. She was never diagnosed with any mental illness or disorder. She surpassed academically in school and had the financial ability to do whatever she would seek career wise. Lorelai did set a great example of what work ethic is and rabellion against previlage is that Rory ruined once she moved away from home. Lorelais greatest mistake was ultimately living vicariously through Rory, history inevitably repeated itself for her, if not worse. Lorelai with all her faults, built a life for herself and was able to embrace her financial privilege as the times to get ahead, and chose the right partner in the end, unlike Rory. I mean ffs Rory, is it not obvious to you that Jess is the "one" having your whole life basically parallel your moms in so many ways? Privilege goes a long way and also destroys a person. Rory set a life for herself BUILT in being in denial. She has very little true introspection. She never worked a day in her life outside of school even. Moral of the story, the world doesn't really change for anyone. It's how you deal with it that matters and THATS what actually sets you apart and aside. Ig: @visualmayhemyt

I think there's something to be said about the struggle that 'gifted' kids like Rory (and myself lol) go through. During our early school years, things come to us with ease, and even when we do have to work hard and study, it's not nearly to the extent that other kids had to. (See: Rory breezing through her studies vs. Paris drills with flashcards and wpm, etc). But gifted kids often become stunted adults, because in adult life, things just don't come easily like they used to. They don't know how to work hard for what they want. especially when it comes to competitive things like internship or job interviews, where they might have gotten preferential treatment during their school age because people would see the potential in the gifted individual. This totally can lead to that entitled personality that Rory picks up. Idk, someone more eloquent than me can probably explain this phenomenon, why it happens, and how to better apply it to Rory's character, but it's something to think about!

Yeah...learned to read by myself at 4, skipped a grade in elementary, then won a prize for highest grades every year in high school. And it came so easily. All my young life people kept telling me how smart I was and I defined myself by that. they thought i would do such great things. When i actually had to work hard for stuff i realised i couldnt do it. Now almost 30, i have nothing.

I think there's different layers to this. There are gifted students who do excel and do know that they have to work for things. There are gifted students that have all the gifts in the world but because they don't have money, access or opportunity become frustrated and stunted adults because they are basically continuously making do with off brand duplo blocs while others go far and get to use the Lego Technics and they're on the outside looking in. In many places, lots of high schools and colleges, which provide job skills training only do so for those who may be going into vocational tech, which is almost always looked down on. Meanwhile because the adults believe that the children shouldn't have to worry about such things, many don't allow their children to learn or "worry" about such things. I don't think that Rory breezed through her studies. It may have seemed that way in comparison to Paris, who wasn't always the best model to follow on that front. There were lots of times where she was shown working very hard for what she wanted in both high school and university. I think Rory in AYIL ran into what a number of people in their20s-40s run into. Sometimes you have to figure it out and readjust and you may not end up where you thought you would despite having tons of opportunities. Most shows generally play at this stage of life for laughs. And when it comes to women, it can be hard because the blueprint isn't always clear. Emily married Richard and because his helpmeet and society matron because that's what was expected of her. Lorelai spent a lot of time reacting. She got pregnant as a teen and didn't want to get married and spent time working whatever job she could to support Rory and herself. She created new and different goals but it wasn't the kind of path that Rory was set on. Whereas if you look at Dean and Logan, their fathers provided them with the blueprint of how to proceed. Good or bad. I think in many ways when it had the opportunity, Gilmore Girls especially AYIL showed us how complex this is.

I think when a show starts, the writers have to figure things out. In the beginning, the entire tv show universe is just about to unfold. But after a while, there has to be drama. A breakup, new boyfriend, new schools, new challenges. In order to receive just that, characters have to change, to make dumb decisions, to leave the good path. "They created this character who's like seemingly so perfect that they had to throw something at her..." But because Rory is the main character of her show, she gets away with sleeping with a married man. And because her mother, also the main character, is a great role model when it comes to sleeping around and having no steady relationship. Lorelai even went back to her ex, only to find out, that his girlfriend is pregnant. Even though almost nobody would say that this could be true, I think some things with Rory's upbringing went terribly wrong. Having a mother like Lorelai seems to be the dream of every young teenage girl, but in reality, it would be a nightmare (and having no father figure at all!). A mother, who is over 30 but acts at least 10 years younger, who thinks she's better than everyone else, who has to stay mad at her mother for many many years (but it's not only because the writers demand it, it makes totally sense considering Lorelai's worldviews), who can't keep up a relationship, not because she couldn't find good guys, but because she's so demanding. Also I think Lorelai thought that since Rory was very smart or liked learning, her daughter's life would be a piece of cake. Yeah, when Rory was young and naive, everything was more or less okay. But by the time Rory started to become a teenager, with boyfriends and stuff, she made a lot of mistakes, because she hadn't been properly prepared for this life, when everybody in her home town and her family would constantly tell her how smart and awesome she was, that she could reach anything and they even paid for her elite university. I think Rory has little self confidence and is kind of a loner. And not really fitting in (for whatever reason). Speaking from my personal experience now, that makes Rory easy prey for any kind of person seeking her attention. You know, if you are kind of shy and not so good with people, and then comes along a person that shows interest in you, you could easily get super excited and full of hopes and dreams, instead of just saying: "This is not okay", "I'm in a relationship" or "you are in a relationship" or "no, I'm not going to steal a boat" etc. Rory seems also to be a difficult character, just like her mom. Her interests are very specific. I remember a scene when Dean was hanging around her while she was looking for books. He obviously wasn't interested, but had to go through it because, yeah, the Gilmore Girls make the rules. It's as simple as that. Rory not marrying Logan was the same as Lorelai not marrying Max. Fun is good but committing to something not so much. Also it's dangerous if you are influenced by the wrong crowd (yeah it's a show, it has to be fun, but still). Like a rebellious Jess, a snobby Logan, a wealthy grandma, a self-centered, egotistical mother plus the constant praise of the entirety of Stars Hollow. Rory was never part of the "real" world. I think the problem for Lorelai and Rory is that all the other people are simply not Lorelai and Rory. Because only the two know what is right and do everything right. It's funny because when you say that Rory is 32 and broke, I mean, that's about my age and compared to the huuuuge potential of the now broke Rory, I'm doing a solid living. But that are just my 2 cents^^, most of the audience usually watches a show for entertainment, not for moral behaviour and life lessons. That are just my thoughts. I give no guarantee that they make sense. But if some things do, that'd be alright. Maybe I'm totally wrong, it's just my opinion written down spontaneously. But from looking back on this show and characters, this is how I'm feeling. I used to watch the show for many years and really liked it a lot (but didn't really question any behaviour of the main characters), but can't stand it today. It isn't a bad show but it isn't good anymore. And I changed my opinion among others because of the realization what lifestyle and worldview the show/girls are promoting. Rory and Lorelai obviously became kind of role models for girls, and that is a troubling thought considering their cheating and behaviour. They are not alone. There are even worse shows dressed up nicely.

I agree that Rory´s downfall is strongly linked to how much every person in Rory´s life seemed to treat her like a princess, especially her grandparents. However, her downfall goes beyond that sort of entitled upbringing. She´s now a LOT more flawed than Lorelai and hasn´t learned ANYTHING from all the mistakes she´s made throughout the sixteen years between the original show and its reunion. Your take was perfectly explained but I don´t know what your personal stance on Rory´s decline is. To me, Palladino had no excuse to destroy one of her most iconic characters. I´m sure she wanted her show to end on a realistic note, but she went way too far with Rory to the point that her character just lost all plausibility. Actually, the whole revival felt so forced and awkward that, except for the Stars Hollow look, nothing kept the essence of the wonderful original series.

@@mateoairaudo5535 Well said. The reasons why a character is written differently or why the writers decide to change direction is hard to explain. I haven't seen but heard about the "A Year" show. I tried to watch some minutes, but couldn't stand it at all. As you perfectly said: The settings may be the original ones but the show's feel is gone. We have to understand that the show started in 2000! That was not only 20 years ago, it was in an entirely different time! The screen format was different. The show wasn't in HD, it was much less special effects or CGI, the pace was slower. That all changed in the following years. And of course Lorelai and Rory got older. A lot older. It's unbelievable that at least Lorelai wouldn't change a bit with age. Also a big problem I see is that the (other) characters haven't changed (at all?). That might work for comedy shows, but GG is a dramedy or drama show. Many of the minor characters are just 2D. They always act the same and we know almost nothing about them. At some point that has to get boring. Maybe the only chance to bring new energy/drama to the show is to let one of the main characters fall down. They could've written Rory more diverse. Yes, with some problems, but also with a solid foundation in life. Just like a kind of normal human being. Making the same mistakes all over again with being twice the age is just ignorant. But I also understand how difficult it has to be to write a 4-part-show 10 years after the ending of the original show. That is difficult for different reasons.

@@technologywontsaveus Agree. I believe that the reunion should´ve never been made. The problem of reuniting a cast from a show that aired 2 decades ago is the changes that took place regardng time, culture, technology, etc. That´s what J. Aniston has always said about a potential Friends reunion. She claimed that, though she would be delighted to do it, factors such as the period in which the show took place could definetly kept the reunion from being good. Can you imagine Chandler, Monica, Phoebe and Rachel using Whatsapp and taking selfies at Central Perk? I can´t. The 90´s was a whole different decade and having a Friends reunion these times could take the essence of the show away. A Year in the Life is a perfect example of that. In episode 1, Rory has trouble with her cellphone because of Internet issues. That was a regular and effective joke back in the original series. But, we´re talking about the beginning of the century, when Internet was not so advanced. Making that joke nowadays is dated and ridiculous as we can use mobile data.

Spoiler alert: I understand they wanted her to end up having a single mom experience just like Lorelai, but omg they didn't have to ruin her like that. She could have ended up being a single parent AND successful (as she was destined to be from episode 1) at the same time.

in the beginning i truly really enjoyed rory’s character as she was really inspiring and relatable. throughout the course of the seasons, each likeable and enjoyable trait of hers disappears to a point where her character was sadly unrecognizable. wish it didn’t have to be that way and the directors should of tied things off better than they did!

I feel rory was so used to the whole world telling her that she's so perfect that when one person contradicts and questions it shes so taken aback and shocked and thus almost galvanizes into a series of making ill descions. I hear people complaining about her a lot and don't get me wrong she had her flaws ,but I can't hate her because I've grown up with her. The cheating is inexcusable ( I dont even consider the revival ) but I mean...she is half Christopher.
