The conclusions drawn in this video have significant errors. The reason for the increase in sales of SUVs is definitely not because of performance. How many performance SUVs are on the market today? Are those the best sellers? Lots more to go over, but realistically, >25% of the points made in this video are incorrect.
@SlackActionBumble5 жыл бұрын
Performance is relative. A mid-range modern SUV has the 0 to 60 numbers of a 1960s or 70s Ferrari.
@jerrymeetsworld5 жыл бұрын
@@SlackActionBumble I see what you're getting at but that's not a sound argument. An SUV from 1990 has more performance than a 1940 Bugatti Type 57.
@SlackActionBumble5 жыл бұрын
@@jerrymeetsworld fair enough, I see your point. Let me refine what I'm trying to say. I think to an average soccer mom type of consumer, the only performance concern is " sufficiently / pleasantly fast" vs " annoyingly / dangerously slow". This borderline is somewhere around the 6-7 second 0-60 times. Modern-day crossovers have mostly reached the fast side of this. more importantly, modern crossovers are approximately equally as fast as modern budget family sedan cars. This was definitely not true of SUVs even 10 years ago. to sum up, yes, the sales of SUVs are partially because of increased performance. Not compared to sports cars, but compared to regular cars. There is no longer a performance trade-off at least when it comes to acceleration.
@drdewott91545 жыл бұрын
From what I can gather, the steep demand of SUV's don't even come from the customers, but instead from dealerships buying them in much bigger bulk than any other types. And im not gonna lie, I suspect they do this on a belief that the SUV's will gain them the most money per purchase compared to other car types. And if that's true, that's just greedy and evil of the dealerships.
@SlackActionBumble5 жыл бұрын
@@drdewott9154 even assuming that this is true, and the crossovers have a higher profit margin, how is this evil? The dealerships are just trying to make money. I am a borderline socialist and I am okay with this. Poor people don't buy new cars. And if the wealthier people wants to pay more for the crossover, that's their choice. There are far greater evils in the capitalist world than a dealership making profit on an unnecessary product that people want. And why wouldn't people want crossovers? I know this is heresy in Enthusiast circles, but they are simply more comfortable and roomier without much of a performance or even mileage trade-off. I am too poor to buy new cars, but when I rent one, I upgrade to a crossover if it's inexpensive. I like being able to see over the guardrail.

Biggest downsides to convertibles IMO: - easier for thieves to get in - bad weather/rain - not as sturdy in case of an accident/rolling over - usually more expensive than equivalent hardtop
@Tubes12AX7k2 жыл бұрын
Generally true, but: if a thief wants your car badly enough, regardless of the car, they'll take it. I won't indulge the comments section here by saying how. Bad weather - you'll probably put the top up, anyway, if you're going to park for a while. Rollovers - performance based cars are often targa tops or T-tops or have a halo bar of some sort. More expensive - true, unless it comes standard as a targa. Unexpected benefit - it's easier to cary outsized items like large boxes, poles, surfboards. We've picked up large items from a store, put the top down, and didn't worry about it fitting inside.

One of the biggest, glaring flaws in this video is it treats convertibles as its own type of car. A convertible is merely an option on most vehicles. A Ford Galaxie shares nothing in common with a Porsche 911, yet they are both lumped into the same market segment here. Secondly, I love how it mentions convertible SUVs as something that can save the market. We've had those for decades: Jeep CJs have had both soft tops and removable hardtops as an option, as have International Scouts. Ford Broncos, Chevy Blazers/GMC Jimmys, and Dodge Ramchargers/Plymouth Traildusters had removable hardtops. Only one of these vehicles (soon to be two) are left today. (And no, I'm not recognizing that sorry excuse for a Blazer from Chevy) Third, I fail to see how "performance" SUVs/crossovers (or even SUVs/crossovers in general) are replacing convertibles. That's saying an entire category of vehicles is replacing an option on another category. To add to that, performance isn't exclusive to convertibles, nor are all convertibles high performance vehicles.
@AlineaEuros4 жыл бұрын
"drivers no longer have to sacrifice performance with by choosing an suv over a sports car" false, they still do, all that weight higher center of gravity and higher drag will significantly sacrifice your performance, you can always stick a powerful engine in an suv or basically any car, but making it handle like a sports car is going to be an entirely different story. crossovers in general aren't fun to drive especially when you dont even care to offroad them, this makes people desire a car in general a lot less when they sacrifice it all for practicality in levels that they probably wouldn't even need to have.

There’s too few options for convertibles on the market. Those that are, are usually priced out of most people’s budget. There also aren’t many “large” convertibles either, most people see them as impractical as there’s not enough interior space and not enough cargo space. The 50s-70s models had it right. Family sized with luggage room.
@SvdSinner5 жыл бұрын
You missed another big issue: Speed limits. In the '90s, I could drive my Mustang convertible at the 55mph speed limit rather comfortably. Driving on a modern 70mph highway is so noisy that it is fatiguing and not fun. Wind noise goes up geometrically with speed.
@dave9005754 жыл бұрын
Wow, I find myself back playing throwback again. I drive a 20 year old convertible Camaro Z28. Unless its below zero, raining or snowing hard enough for the snow to stick to the back seat my convertible top is down. Because the back is open air flows over the windshield and out the open back unlike a sedan. In a hardtop when you open just the front windows the air rushes in and slams against the glass of the rear window. The resulting pressure wave creates that thunderous roar. If you are in a four door model opening the back windows provides some, but not much relief. A pop-up sun roof or retractable moon roof creates a roar that is out of place and jarring compared to the quiet refinement from the rest of the modern car. I've two cars with moon roofs. A Pontiac 6000 and the much larger Lincoln Town Car. The noise in either was too intrusive. So, my big yard, growing my own food and driving a convertible. Guess that makes me some kind of dinosaur. Just remember, birds are dinosaurs.

Summer in AZ is excruciating when it gets mid day, wouldn't think about it unless I had a shit ton of water. Sunburn personally I don't have to worry about as much but it would be relatively easy to avoid. The bigger problem would be certain things in your car getting hot, like the gear shift or seats(mostly if your picking someone up thing). I doubt I would want to have the top down much if I lived in Flagstaff during winter, nor any snowy or rainy place. Overall you would have to live somewhere that it is warmish but not painful to be out, maybe the coast but rain could be a big no for that. In the end get what you want man, even if you rarely have the top down you have the option.

I imagine the pandemic will give convertibles a bit of a boost. I drove mine around A LOT while the weather was still nice to get out and enjoy the weather during the shutdowns. And during the past summer, the roads were packed with more than you usually see on a typical year (I’m also in a northern/ mid-Atlantic climate where people tend not to buy them because of the winters).

@Cheddar I just wanted to offer some contructive criticism. I watch a lot of your content, especially anything traffic or car-related, and I enjoy the way you present concepts in easy-to-watch short videos. However, I always have to watch your videos on 1.5x speed, as the narration is unbearably slow. If you could speed the narration up a bit, I think that would improve your content.
@kylejnorris5 жыл бұрын
Agreed. Lately, I've noticed Cheddar's videos have been considerably slower paced. Maybe a new editor... Tighten it up, please.
@Ruslan-S5 жыл бұрын
Maybe that's a way to increase your video length for free. People will just speed it up if needed and at the same time KZbin will count it as full 10 minutes of juicy, action-packed content?
@kylejnorris5 жыл бұрын
@@Ruslan-S Good point! How did I miss that its JUST over 10 minutes?! Way to go @Cheddar, you're really milking that algorithm at your viewers' expense. If I see one more of these, I'll unsubscribe.
@Ruslan-S5 жыл бұрын
@@kylejnorris Just looked it up online and apparently that's not how it works. If you speed up the video, KZbin won't count the full 10 mins. See here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gXiykHWMbNh9qLs It's possible that Cheddar just doesn't know this, but makes my hypothesis less likely :)

I propose an alternative: Convertibles are not popular anymore because of traffic. If I'm driving a convertible I want the wind in my hair and the open road. These days I'm sitting in traffic EVERYWHERE. I'm almost always in traffic regardless if it's slow moving traffic or fast moving traffic. The open road is an exception.
@dylandreisbach19865 жыл бұрын
For some reason, I see convertibles as a compromise. You get a roofless car, but that cloth roof takes up space for other features. Also, I don't like the heat and half of the year is cold. so I'm good with my air-conditioned box.

I would have to argue that the "auto market crashed in 2008"! The fact is the auto market hasn't been doing real good for much longer than 2008 here in America, when you compile ALL the other events and figures into it!! To start with cars like the Mustang, Camaro, and Challenger were once considered "affordable" sports cars for the "family man" who couldn't afford a Corvette or a Ferrari!! AND they literally exploded onto the market because they were cars people ACTUALLY WANTED TO DRIVE to begin with!! THEN by 2004 government regulations have gotten so piss poor about emissions, gas mileage and other factors, that "cheap cars" like the Chevy Cobalt, Ford Focus and such because "disposable cars" that nobody wanted and even fewer could afford. which plays into the THIRD fact you are completely ignoring! JOBS and INCOME LEVELS!! You see by 2004 jobs were harder and harder to find for the American worker, the same people that had no problem finding manufacturing work found NO JOBS to supply the growing number of "Middle Class" American's who couldn't find a job if their life depended on it!! Thanks to NAFTA trade agreements and corporate greed, as well as those same government regulations, began killing off the WHOLE Middle Class that was left!! The jobs went to India, Mexico, China and Japan as well as even Germany, while most of the American Consumer Base began to refuse to buy NEW cars and then started recycling their older cars to get them to "last longer"!! WHICH again is when in 2008 the "Cash For Clunkers" bill was supposed to "force people" to buy new cars, but instead destroyed the used car and used car parts market instead!! Which was because of the FOURTH POINT to all this you are ignoring, that I already mentioned INCOME LEVELS!! Income levels have NOT improved even to this day in ALL private sectors of today's world!! Around 2004 Chrysler, GM and even Ford began pumping out cars like the PT Cruiser,. the Chevy HHR, SSR and Chevy SS, and Ford had their new Thunderbird Retro cars that should have sold well but were plagued with a number of problems!! First was poor quality of their build like in the Thunderbird, for a car price that was NOT affordable to the average customer!! BECAUSE by 2004 many American workers were still earning the same pay they had been earning since the late 1970s which is ALSO the reason for the home sales bubble of the same time period!! Again many Americans too, (which ignore it all you want, it is STILL a major fact to consider) being the largest consumer base in the world, could no longer afford to buy a $30,000 convertible when they could barely afford the $14,000 pile of crap Dodge Neon!! And even though everybody LOVED the SSR Chevy, there was no market for a car nobody with a real 2004 income could afford!!! Today in 2020 you still see the same results as income levels have not "improved" much, and then jobs are still not "widely available" either!! So even buying a "cheap" new car is outside of some customers grasps because not many can afford a $25,000 Ford Flex or a $23,000 Honda Civic now either!! And they certainly will not throw down the extra $2000 for a convertible also!! There is one other thing too that you have to consider!! A sixth thing you are over looking!! Which is that corporate greed!! Cars 40 years ago were built by humans, humans that had jobs (building cars) and earning paychecks!! TODAY cars are built by robots, and you certainly don't PAY robots so there is NO REASON why cars need to cost as much as they do!! Robots DO NOT go on strike, they never sleep and they don't ask for raises!! BUT Robots don't buy cars either!! So the American car market is in serious trouble now and it will only get worse!! Because their supply is much higher than their demand, and the prices for a new car or even a one or two year older car is NOT affordable to those who would like a new vehicle!! In the end it has become a "perfect storm" of sorts because they have killed off the customer base, destroyed the middle class, jack up prices on cars to the point where nobody can afford them, continue to build cars nobody wants while raising the prices on the cars people do want to levels nobody can afford!! AND lastly making cars more disposable than ever is not a solution to selling more cars either!! Today more than ever we are forced into things with "planned obsolescence" a design method that has only gotten worse since the 1960s!! Twenty years ago you could still buy a car that would last 10 years, but now cars completely fall apart in just two years!! And they are designed to do that!! Even the major companies have stopped making parts for newer vehicles that roll off the assembly line six months after the car is built!! Making it impossible to maintain your car past a five year limit of the term of your loan!! Forcing you to buy a new car, even if you didn't really want to or couldn't afford too!! Which this is the seventh thing you are not considering either!!
