The DCEU failed because it came from a place of desperation rather than inspiration. Marvel studios earned its cinematic universe because it took years to build it up piece by piece with standalone films introducing the major characters before bringing them together in the first big crossover (The Avengers). DC/WB didn't have the patience to carry that out, and were more interested in catching up to their competitor as quickly as possible. To quote a comment I once read, "going from Man of Steel to Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice is like going from Iron Man 1 directly into Captain America: Civil War." The final result was a cinematic universe that didn't feel as fleshed out or coherent as its competitor, especially with reactionary moves like trying to abandon Snyder's darker and more brooding tone in favor of emulating Marvel's lightheartedness. The biggest lesson to be learned in this is to walk before you can run.

@ricniks46194 ай бұрын
Originally the Ryan Reynolds Green Lantern was going to be the start of the DCEU but because it flopped and was hated critically they changed their minds on making it a thing. Around that same time they were filming MOS which was originally suppose to be a else worlds self contained story that wouldn't have angered people. Until TDKR came out the same year as The Avengers which made $1.5 billion so they saw Superheroes movies could be extremely profitable and tried to copy the MCU by forcing MOS to be a cinematic universe but not put any of the work to get there because DC had more iconic characters than Marvel did at the time due to the DCAU & having Batman & Superman. Which was a bad idea from the start because if you watch MOS you will notice that the theme of the movie is Superman is the only supernatural thing in the world their is no Vigilantes, Gods, Green Lanterns, Meta Humans, etc. It was intended to be a self contained story but since WB got greedy they forced it into a franchise which ruined the continuity because how do you explain people not knowing about Batman? how do you explain people not remembering all the stuff that Wonder Woman did in 1984? how do you explain people not remembering Black Adam who killed the king of a major country?, etc without it being a plot hole or you retconning it?. Also you were correct they literally tried running before they could even walk their were a ton of executives fighting for power in the DCEU randomly announcing projects (Joker movie, Gotham Sirens movie, Black Manta movie, Cyborg movie, Black Superman movie, Static Shock movie, etc) or trying to speed run the development of DCEU like having a old Batman show up in the 2nd movie of the DCEU & him not acting anything like the traditional Batman we know.

Yes, I know Henry came back and did a cameo at the end of Black Adam and Ben Affleck came back to do the flash movie. But seriously, it was time for that universe to die because Warner Brothers had made up their mind that they were going to do no more Superman or solo Batman movies and because they don’t have Superman and Batman they just weren’t going to do a justice league movie either. And the Rock thoughtblack Adam was the character we wanted at the center of the universe. I like black Adam, I like the rock, but his character shouldn’t be the center of the DC universe. They tried to recreate the success of the MCU without acknowledging what made the MCU successful. Instead of creating a clear and concise plan for the first few years of storytelling, they rushed into things. And when that didn't work, they just decided to do the cinematic equivalent of throwing feces at the wall to see what stuck. And what makes it even more embarrassing is that the DCEU started with one studio owning the rights to the entire DC catalog, yet couldn't come close to measuring up to the success of the MCU, which for most of its run so far had the rights to less than half of their characters.

But during that time, they were hit with a writer’s block, leaving them unable to continue working on the script. Therefore, Nolan suggested to Goyer and everyone else to take a week off. During that week David Goyer decided to come up with an idea for a Superman movie. His idea for the Superman would be that Superman arriving in the modern world would be the biggest event in human history. Afterwards, he would show Nolan who would then take the pitch to Warner Bros. Thus, a new Superman movie was greenlit, with Nolan recommending Zack Snyder as the director. Soon enough, Snyder was hired as the director for this Superman movie in 2010. He would get to work on bringing the Superman back to the big screen, with the name of the film being titled Man of Steel.

They noticed Marvel’s success and wanted in on that immediately. Which leads me to B) Instead of being original and leaning on all the lore/moods and so on that they have at their disposal, they chose to just try and copy Marvel’s homework while changing some things here and there to make it seem like it’s wholesomely theirs🤦♂️. Marvel put in the leg work to get to where they were whilst DC tried to skip all that and just go straight to Justice League…with a 2hr or less movie…for JUSTICE LEAGUE 🤦♂️!

List of things the DCEU did right: 1. Hiring Henry Cavill, Ben Affleck, Gal Gadot, and Jason Mamoa List of things they did wrong: Literally everything else. Zack Snyder is an idiot. And we know that is true because only an idiot would allow Jesse Eisenberg to do THAT for 3 hours, make Superman gloomy, and make Batman an unabashed serial killer. Brilliant documentary, beautifully made. You deserve many more subs, mate.
@kiwiisafruit996 ай бұрын
Not gonna argue the lex thing, it can be perceived either way. But Superman finds his place in the world, the journey is incredibly good, he's literally battling himself at every turn, that makes him grounded and not 1 dimensional. Batman we see isn't a new batman, it's a 20year veteran who lost his robin. He is mad pissed. Towards the end of bvs he realises it, to me that's character growth. To each their own I guess
@HH29.175 ай бұрын
@@kiwiisafruit99what you are saying about superman is correct but Zack synder doesnt understand batman. He literally has 1 rule (which is no killing) and it gets broken instantly. If they wanted batman to break this rule and become a more pissed off batman then give him a character arc rather than just making him that way. Maybe have a batman film where robin dies at the end or something which causes batman to start killing people now. Batman can be a killer if they wanted but for the fans to understand this change he needs to go through this character change from the batman we know to the gloomy killer batman. There was no need for "Justice League" to be years away. I had no problems with it following after "Wonder Woman". DC has been its own worst enemy in the translation of the comic books to the big screen. They let Marvel get years ahead of them; they cast different actors to play the same characters in different movies undermining any sense of continuity or connectivity by the fans; they tried too quickly to create an analogous response to the MCU not recognizing the decades of work that Marvel put into making that leap. DC had a challenge to begin with where Marvel had a tradition in its source comic book material of plots where complex heroes--not villains--were central to the stories, which also lent to cultivating real fans; DC, on the other hand, had comic stories that were much more dependent on the villains. it is why the Rogues Galleries of Batman, Superman, and the Flash are so well known compared to those of Marvel Heroes. The first question anyone asks about a DC movie is: "who's the bad guy?" That's because DC has cultivated its stories around the heroes foiling them as opposed to struggling with their own demons which Marvel is soooo good at putting its heroes through. Stan Lee left a great legacy for screenwriters to pick up. Ironically, it was the DC Animated series under Bruce Timm, where the greatest transition for DC was made. And it was a formula very similar to what worked for MCU live movies: take your time; develop the characters; develop their relationships; let conflicts be real and let some business stay unfinished. The vocal talents used in the DC animated world were brilliant as well. It is not a coincidence that the actor with the longest continuity for a DC character was Kevin Conroy's Batman. It's sad that WB never learned a thing from DC's strongest franchise to help its weakest.

This is important because as far back as Man of Steel, WB already meddling. Another interview is from BvS, where snyder said he proposed superman sequel to WB execs and the movie ended with kryptonite arrived on Wayne manor, suddenly those execs eyes changed and they demand batman in the whole movie. If you bought BvS Steel book, you can see concept art of metallo. Metallo supposed to be villain and not doomsday but they changed it in pre-production because of JL where batman must recruiting JL members

It's very biased. Studio meddling wass the main problem but not enough light is put on the poor planning. The studio wanted to rush a universe but snyder was also rushing his own movies. You cant tell me WB execs who know jack shit about comics were the ones who decided to have death of superman and dark knight returns rolled I to one movie WHILE having a completely unrelated plotline that added nothing. The problems all started from batman V superman. It was simply a bad film. Warner bros execs are idiots who panicked immediately and forced Joss Whedon to try and sweep snyder's vision under the rug. BvS being bad is Snyder's fault. The universe failing as a whole is warner bros fault.

Part of the reason why Henry Cavill couldn't appear in anymore DC films after Justice League was because of his deal with Netflix in 2018, which prohibited him from doing other films outside of Netflix between 4 to 5 years, all so he could do the Witcher series (since he is a fan of the books and the games). After 2018, the only projects that Cavill did were Enola Holmes and The Witcher. The only exception to the rule was the Snyder Cut, which apparently was in Cavill's contract.

That was disrespectful to the source material and comic book fans. Batman V Superman is atrocious in its vision NOT because of rewrites or trimming. There were many moments in the DCEU that made me roll my eyes, but I think the most vindictive moment on behalf of the WB executives - aside from scrapping Batgirl - was after the Snyder Cut was released. The film literally set the stage, the road, the path for the DCEU's future, setting up their Infinity arc with Darkseid coming to Earth to find the Anti-Life Equation. And what did the executives say - Joss Whedon's trashfire cut of Justice League was the canon version in their crumbling universe. From beginning to end, the DCEU was an unfortunate garbage fire orchestrated by impatient and greedy producers who wanted to make a quick buck at the compromise of telling good stories and making good movies.

I thought both were horrible at justifying the clash of the heroes. The problem for BvS was WW stole the show, plus the MARTHA thing. Snyder's inability to get a billion dollar box office for BvS got the execs keen to get rid of him. Shazam was actually quite profitable, since the budget had been kept down. The biggest mistake was in not harmonzing the Snyderverse with the Arrowverse. Much of the Arrowverse would have made for better films than the Snyder/Goyerverse, which mostly sucked.

Henry is a nerd and should be a producer on this sort of content since he’s so passionate about the source material

The Wonder Woman ending always puzzled me. It was such a breath of fresh air when Diana defeated the guy she thought was Ares and expected all the bad guys to stop, but they didn't, and Steve told her that sometimes bad people are just bad. It's like the studio went "Nah, screw the theme of the movie. People want a big, ugly CGI monster that contradicts the lesson the hero just learned. Brilliant!" Amazing breakdown. What WB did was disgusting and I will never forgive them for their treatment of their actors and directors Quoting from the Green Goblin in NWH: “Strong enough to have it all. Too weak to take it.” This summarizes WB, they had something great at their grasp but didn’t know how to manage it. Great work with the documentary 🎉It doesn’t matter if you’re a Gunn or Snyder fan I think we can all agree that WB sucks and they fucked up. They fumbled the bag hard. I will always miss Henry Cavill's Superman. He was my ideal Clark Kent since day one, and even when he had the WB executives against him, his delivery of Superman was charming, warm, and full of hope every single time. Right person, wrong time I guess. it still hurts Henry was let go in such a bad way. unforgivable. well, put together a video btw bro. really good Speaking as someone who was not a fan of this franchise as a whole, it’s interesting to know the behind-the-scenes story of how terribly misguided some of the major executive creative heads were. I’ll always be curious to know what the DCEU would’ve been like (for better or is the best if there were fewer panicky and desperate decisions being made by the execs and instead allowed the filmmakers to have a bit more creative control. Another thing you could have added in the beginning was where Man of Steel came from. It could be titled Origin of a New Universe “In 2008, after The Dark Knight was released in theaters, Christopher Nolan and David S. Goyer were in the process of writing the Dark Knight Rises. But during that time, they were hit with writer’s block, leaving them unable to continue working on the script. Therefore, Nolan suggested to Goyer and everyone else to take a week off. During that week David Goyer decided to come up with an idea for a Superman movie. His idea for Superman would be that Superman's arrival in the modern world would be the biggest event in human history. Afterward, he would show Nolan who would then take the pitch to Warner Bros. Thus, a new Superman movie was greenlit, with Nolan recommending Zack Snyder as the director. Soon enough, Snyder was hired as the director for this Superman movie in 2010. He would get to work on bringing Superman back to the big screen, with the name of the film being titled Man of Steel. Really glad you're laying all of this out like this. Panicking WB execs are the problem, and I have no reason to believe that will change for the DCU. The theatrical cut of BvS was full of plot holes. Good job, WB execs. The Ultimate Edition is such a great movie. I don't understand fans who complained about Superman's suit and theme music in Black Adam. I was just grateful he was back. You summed it up quite nicely in the end. Thank you for putting this together. It’s such a great comprehensive look at greed vs creativity. It's good to have a final look back at all the BS the DCEU went through on the same day Netflix is releasing Snyder's new movie Rebel Moon. Good job 👌After watching this, You probably explained the whole universe a lot better than everybody else. Good job👍🏽Well done! As a DC fan, it’s been infuriating to watch WB self-sabotage these films over and over again I can’t wait to watch this whole documentary especially when it’s narrated by Our Movie News and can we all give an all-around applause 👏 for all his work hard and dedication to making a video about this think about all the research and time it took into making this type of documentary? also, shout out to his passion for the DC universe. I enjoy how context is given to the DCEU situation. How Snyder's original ideas were “accelerated” or simply just rushed by the studio. Studio interference and the vocal minority of agenda-driven anti-Snyder media is what destroyed the DCEU. The box offices were consistently growing, and WB disregarded all that to start making Harley Quinn, Shazam 1+2, a horrible WW sequel, and the awful Flash movie. The only highlights after Aquaman were ZSJL and Black Adam and the studio disregarded that success in favor of undercutting movies for a few years until James Gunn made his DCU movie. This is a horrible way to run a movie studio. great compilation OMN, very informative. hoping that they did learn and we'll be seeing a rise in quality from this DCU. thank you for all your hard work and especially that which you put in bringing us this sendoff my friend. That BvS comicon clip was the fire. I still go back and watch it from time to time. :') Came to the comment section to realize everything that needed to be said had been said. Thank you for the breakdown, and for acknowledging this enough for us all to move on. what a damn shame. This was just a perfect summary, didn't miss a thing. Amazing work!! Left feeling a little sad. Great Breakdown. This is an abject lesson to us all as not to compare yourself to anyone else and to do your own thing. If (Big IF) WB had sat back and let Zack do his thing, we would have had an amazing DC arc and satisfying stopping point if they wanted to reboot. Instead, they wanted to be like Marvel, and look where Marvel is now... As a huge fan of these characters and DC content outside the DCEU, this is a heartbreaking story. So much potential is ruined by greed and poor planning. A great video chronicling this era that honestly could be its own movie. Whether you liked the DCEU or not, it is over now and it's time for something new. With James Gunn as the head and Marvel now slowing down, the stage is set for the two brands to finally share an equal spotlight. Can't wait to see where your content goes next Great Documentary, thank you for your work! A video that ranks all the DCEU-Movies would be great!! For me Batman v Superman is still my favorite followed closely by Zack's JL! 🖤🎞👍I was there for every twist and turn.
