His loan at Everton was actually brilliant, he did amazing, he proved he was European league quality... I think that was his biggers achievement, he did great in England and exorcised the demons of people saying he wasn't good enough to play in Europe.
@alancawfield6549
@alancawfield6549 Жыл бұрын
But it also proved that he wasted his career by not playing in Europe, he could have played in any of the top european leagues but decided to play in a very poor level competition rather than test himself. Imagine if Manu Ginobili or Dirk Nowitzki decided to avoid playing in the the NBA people wouldn't think much of them as players.
@ASalv188
@ASalv188 Жыл бұрын
@@alancawfield6549 well, that is true but also he did try, he kind of didn't make it early on in his career, he was on the books at Leverkusen for 5 years and nothing much came of it... So until that point, it was suggested he just wasn't good enough. Really he probably just needed more opportunities and once he developed enough as a player, once he did those loan spells at Everton you could see the maturity in his game, he was tidy in possession, he exploited space well and defended well as part of the team... He was under a heavy microscope because of the context but he handled the occasion really well and in some games was even one of their best players

Him being left off the 2014 World Cup roster will always be what I remember klinsmann for. If he was there the Altidore injury wouldn’t have affected us as much. I imagine if he was our striker in the Belgium game, we would’ve had a solid chance at beating them.

Having known Landon since he was a kid in Redlands, California, and having crossed paths with Klinsman a time or two over the years, I will say that those two both have egos that got in the way of the game in that last World Cup. Even using Donovan as a Super Sub in a couple of the games would have given the US team the fire power to advance past where they were halted. The team Klinsman brought just did not have the finishing power that Donovan would have added.

By all standards he didn't do well at Bayern. A lot of that was Klinsmann tho, he kept using him as an early sub at a different position every match, saw him also get just stoned by the keeper a couple times as well. Not to mention Bayern at the time was very toxic. I think Klinsmann blamed him for getting fired there and kept him off the WC team using "fitness" as an excuse to be petty. Everton just said as soon as he got off the plane, you are playing RW, you are starting saturday and everybody has got your back here. That was all he needed from a coach.

Well, a few years ago, soccer was only the seventh most popular spectator sport in the United States, and Donovan played even earlier than that measurement was taken. I don't know what the seventh most popular sport is in Mexico, but if you mentioned the best player for Mexico in that sport, I doubt most Mexican sports fans would know the name without prompting. It also doesn't help that most American soccer fans are Premier League fans rather than MLS fans.

The biggest issue he had been Leverkusen didn't want him. The GM signed him, the coach threw a temper tantrum about it, and he claimed players would pass or talk to him. IMO, if he went to the right place he would have been a world class player. The PreMadonvan years were pretty awful. Ironically I think Beckham helped him. Beckham at the time for the Galaxy had pretty much gave a vibe that he'd rather be anywhere than on the LAG and he was bigger than the club (He prob was, but he wasn't in a rush to ask to cancel that contract). It alienated a lot of the players and I think Landon saw a little of himself became more of a better teammate and a leader.

Us Mexican soccer fans hate Landon Donovan! Lol not really “hate” but he was public enemy no. 1 and made us suffer when playing against Mexico especially in 2002. One of my favorite memories was when my team- Pachuca played against LA Galaxy in 2007 I believe? Or 2008 in the Superliga final. LA Galaxy had a really good team with Beckham as the cherry on top. The game went to penalties and Landon did his usual ritual of taking what seems to be an eternity in the runup and our goalkeeper Miguel Calero (RIP Legend) blocks his penalty and tells him “no” with his finger 😂 great memories

Donovan was 17 years old when he flamed out at Leverkusen. When he came back and spot played at Everton for parts of a couple of years much later, he was excellent - the talent shined thru. In retrospect, Donovan, without a doubt, had the ability to be a star in Europe, but he was happy playing in the states. And, really, who cares whether he missed being a star at Man United or Bayern or one of those? He played for the Galaxy and always made them an entertaining watch and it was fun when he teamed up with Beckham.

Calling him a European burnout is completely biased and far from reality. A very quick fact check would have found that when Everton wanted him, MLS refused to allow the transfer to take place. Prior to that at Bayern Munich, he and JK had obvious issues to where he was sent back to MLS and surprise surprise it happened again when he was cut from the world cup squad. Landon was quite open about how he was physically needing a break. His mental health was also needing something. Why? Because he was playing literally year round, with shorter breaks than most of the players on the USMNT and the pressure he had to endure over time would have stopped 99% of the players who dream of playing in the world cup. He has yet to give up his passion for the game. Burnout? LOL what a joke of a comment.

Renowned in U.S. soccer, garnered praise domestically but never really achieved global acclaim. Probably one of the most famous U.S. players but fell short of being considered a legend of the game. If he’d tested himself in a European league his trajectory might have been different. Comparisons to legends like Beckham highlight the subtle difference in mental fortitude between a very, very good player and a superstar - Beckham’s unwavering dedication and focus on his game, saw him get back into the Real Madrid team when he had been completely frozen out, Donovan's several short stints in Europe shows a slightly more fragile ego - i.e. you felt Donovan needed to feel the love to play, Becks just needed a chance to get on the pitch. Despite this minor flaw, Donovan’s impressive 57 international goals is a true testament to his talent and ability where he felt comfortable, supported / believed in.

That explanation of the US Olympic Development Program was funny 😆 For anyone wondering ODP is like youth national team but broken down regionally, because the country is so large. So if you’re in Los Angeles, you get called up to play for So Cal ODP, where you come in for camps every now and again, playing against other ODP regional teams in showcase games. It helps US Soccer scouts see potential talents without having to travel to thousands of small cities or tournaments where only rich kids play.

I think if he had gone back to Leverkusen after the 2002 World Cup he could've made a break through and eventually became a starting level player in 1-2 years. Shame he didn't rate himself to overcome the grind there because his profile was one that wasn't out of place particularly in their 2001/02 team (not that he would get much minutes). He could've been an understudy to Ze Roberto or Basturk for example. There would've been lots of opportunity in the few seasons after with players leaving or retiring. There's no reason to think that he couldn't have been a high EL level player at least by 2006 when you consider what peak Dempsey was doing for instance in the PL. Would need to go back and watch some of his games but I don't think it would be unreasonable to state he had more variety to his game than someone like Pulisic, he just needed a few more seasons in Europe to develop it a higher level.

He wanted to grow the game domestically club wise. He is I still think the winningest player in MLS History, and you don't win that distinction being average. He was better than David Beckham during his time at LA Galaxy, and he was still brilliant when he was loaned to Everton. Landon is not a flop, and to me, is part of why I care about the game in the first place. Him, Dempsey, and Altidore were the Golden Generation for the US from 06-14.

Donovan also got hate from San Jose fans when he left the club and then played for our rival, LA Galaxy. He is one of our best, but also lots of Quakes fans turned their back on him after that.

It's very hard to say who was the best America soccer player. It's either Landon Donovan or Clint Dempsey (though of course it could be someone from the current generation when all is said and done, perhaps Pulisic or Reyna). But there's no doubt that both were very talented and played with a chip on their shoulders. It's part of what made them great players. But Donovan in particular was very controversial and just couldn't keep his mouth shut. His clashes with the Mexican team were legendary and frankly very amusing and actually overall pretty good for the sport in the US and Mexico. I still think Klinsmann leaving him off the World Cup squad was a huge mistake. But despite all the controversies, Donovan was clearly one the best and most influential sports figures in American history.

There's no world in which Pulisic or Reyna will dethrone the other two lmao. How can you compare what Donovan did internationally or Dempsey with Fulham to the other two are you stupid? For example, Mexico actually cared about playing against those two and Tim Howard, nowadays the games are glorified circus shows and both sides don't give a fuck.

Donovan is the best player in history from the USA, unlike the over valued crap that we deal with today, players now get into big teams because of pay to play agreements between mls teams and European teams

in all fairness, Donovan actually have a relatively successful career comparing to an average footballer. at least he made it into first team in PL and have premier league watchers remembering him by. most footballer fade away in 2nd or 3rd tier without anyone remembering them
