winged pikmin are just super strong. even with their current "limitations" they nullify quite a few types of Pikmin. though i do have some ideas for winged nerfs: * to make Blues more relevant, they could have it so by default, winged pikmin either carry things just barely off the ground or dont even lift it into the air. you'd have to put extra wings for them to lift it into the air, which also fits well with their lower attack damage, i think. more fully submerged treasures or water geysers or whatever would also work well and would be way simpler * to make Yellows more relevant, wings could just have a cap on how high they can fly, or flying enemies could just be higher up again and be easier to hit with yellows. though obviously that would be a little weird to tackle, since, why not just charge wings? so that'd probably be something that has to be addressed in the progression design itself. and of course, more electricity usage (seriously Nintendo bring back the wire idea), more deadly electricity, and more buried treasures would also be a good way to improve Yellows' usefulness edit: i actually just had another idea of maybe having heavy wind hazards, where flying enemies or winged pikmin would get caught in it and slow their movement but grounded pikmin would be able to duck under it would be cool too

Pikmin 1 has been greatly vindicated thanks to the Switch port, because of the improvements on things like the pointer/cursor and the almost total fix of the crushing glitch. The game is a surprisingly smooth experience with an incredible amount of balance, with it being so short as its greatest advantage because it means that the devs had the time to think about every single detail they put into the game, and it all comes together in a neat, yet short, package. Yellow Pikmin are a very good example of this. The next entry in the series should put difficulty, combat and puzzle complexity on focus. How to balance these key factors and allow them to flourish on a difficulty curve similar to that of 1 and 2. A game as long as Pikmin 4 should have given every type of Pikmin a chance to shine, and yet it didn't for reasons yet to comprehend.

@ryle5410 you're totally right. Olimar's presence was continuous, but more subtle, and there was a lot more to be unexpected in Pikmin than the formulaic Big Boss on the Last Floor design of Pikmin 2. Do you think that's a good thing or bad? I see it as different, but I don't see it as a step backwards for the franchise.
@ryle541011 күн бұрын
@@Nefnoj I see it as a step to the side. Pikmin 1 is amazing as an art piece, but Pikmin 2 is much better as a videogame in my opinion. Though I think pikmin has strayed too far from what made the first game unique and amazing. I really did not enjoy pikmin 4 for how linear the game plays, how the theme of isolation and figuring things out for yourself is gone and how increasing the amount direct impact you have on combat via oatchi. The character designs felt far too whimsical and childish too, with everything feeling like it's there to be part of the game rather than part of the world (espeically the leaflings and fixation on telling you to have good dandori). Not worth the $60ish nor the 10 year wait.

@ryle5410 all well said! I can't agree about the worth of Pikmin 4 but can agree with your critique of it. It probably has the worst pacing in the franchise. I THINK the narrative of having to save people from the planet is cool, but could have been executed better. Despite having the potential of making the world seem more threatening as you're saving lives, it doesn't really succeed. I also don't prefer its level design, Pikmin 3 leaned too hard into puzzles which Pikmin 4 tried to adapt to Pikmin 2's dungeon gameplay, and I think a balance between puzzles and combat would have been a better balance.

To be charitable in 4's case, if you don't have a specific niche, then you're outclassed by fully-upgraded Oatchi, full stop. I can think of niches that other types of Pikmin fill in that game. - Red: Can carry fire starters and burn haystacks. - Blue: Can multitask in water. - Purple: Stomp is fucking busted as an offensive tool, can multitask with large treasure and bodies, immune to wind and suction, break out of bubbles very fast, and can weigh down flying enemies. - White: _...can carry fast, I guess?_ - Rock: Charge + Oatchi = instant death for most enemies and can break crystal walls and nodes. - Winged: Can carry treasure over many enemies and hazards, can reach high places, and Ultra Spicy Spray makes them the ultimate homing swarm of death incarnate. - Ice: Can freeze bodies of water, freeze enemies which drop nectar and spray on death, and break out of bubbles very fast. - Glow: Bulbmin 2.0, what can I say? The only niche that Yellows fill are _maybe_ buried treasure on high ledges, but Winged can probably cover for that.

9:30 I disagree. The sublevels and general level design in Pikmin 4 is significantly harmful to yellows usefulness compared to Pikmin 2. In Pikmin 4 (due to autolock I assume) most enemies are segregated into different rooms, so you only have to worry about 1 (or at worst 2) enemies or hazards at the same time. In Pikmin 2 you could have rooms with a variety of actually dangerous enemies + electricity. Due to the constant and cumulative danger in Pikmin 2, having a type of Pikmin to quickly take care of a hazard was vital. This does not hold for Pikmin 4 as if you come across electricity, it's in the "electricity room" where you can take it out without any issue, even without yellow Pikmin.

I believe their downfall really started in Pikmin 2. Electricity may be an OHKO Hazard, but all of the electric wires can be easily disposed of with any Pikmin type. It’s like the common consensus with Fire Geysers, you can dispose of them super easily since they power off for so long. Also Purple Pikmin being able to eliminate any niche for them really hurts them. They can flip over Anode Beetles from a ways away, easily dispatching them. And Anode Dweevils suffer from being stunned 100% of the time from Purples. Not to mention that Purples can reach all Yellow intended treasures by getting a running start and throwing them at a slope. That leaves Yellow Pikmin stuck with Electric Gates. Which is a Blue Pikmin type of argument, they are the only Pikmin who can destroy them, and once you do, you have no reason to pull them out. Red Pikmin may not be good in this game either, but compared to Yellow Pikmin, I at least have a reason to want to use them.
@bulborb8756Ай бұрын
well...Yellow's are still good to have when fighting Beady and the Titan Dweevil (just break everything else except the Shock Therapist and it'll be smooth sailing). @Greenish9204Ай бұрын
@bulborb8756 valid argument. But its falls under the same agenda as you described the Fiery Bulblax. They don’t appear much. Beady only appears 3 times in the adventure (one of which only appears if you go really slow), and he is also very pathetic, any Pikmin type can easily rid of him. And the Titan Dweevil is the final boss, and it’s not like other Pikmin Types can’t do it either, I was able to beat him in about 3-4 minutes with just Blue Pikmin. And the Fiery Bulblax is honestly more frequent than you would think as well, they appear in every Wistful Wilds cave, and there happens to be 3 of them on the 2nd Sublevel of the Cavern of Chaos. Like I said, valid argument, but Yellow’s are still the worst in my opinion.

Yellow Pikmin are my favorite types. They are also the type with the biggest identity crisis. I would really approve of shallow water puddles in Pikmin 5 that can be electrocuted and that only Yellows can walk in that shallow water to fix the wires at the other side so that everyone else can cross, and more aerial related hazards for Winged Pikmin so that you can EARN the right to use the most busted type for carrying things cross-map.

I think a way to give Yellow Pikmin another niche is for there be two types of electric hazards. The one in Pikmins 3 and 4 that just stuns all the Pikmin while Yellows are completely unaffected by it, and the one in Pikmin 2 which acts as a more powerful electric variant that instant kills all other Pikmin types, but with Yellows, it just stuns them unconscious. I think there should be more enemies/bosses that use electric attacks. Like how about another Arachnorb boss whose stomps causes electric shockwaves and pissing it off enough causes it to stomp the instant kill electric shockwaves. Or maybe an Arachnorb whose body acts as a bug zapper luring Pikmin to climb it legs and approach to the ball and then releases a discharges that instant kill attack while Yellows are completely immune to the boss's bait. Arachnorbs are already weird enough with Man-at-Legs and Groovy Long Legs, so would a "Shockwave Long Legs" or a "Bug Zapper Long Legs" really be out of the ordinary for this species?

Pikmin 3 answers this by making all the hazards meaningless and trivial to ignore. 4 answers this by somewhat returning to actual hazards, but then literally forcing you to take the correct types at all times, and also forcing you to only take 3 types just so you dont get too confused, and also aiming for you, and also giving you a nearly invincible dog that does everything automatically, and also giving you a bunch of consumable items that instakill everything, and also giving you unlimited glow pikmin just in case you still cant do it and also... yknow what, maybe they should also just add a new pikmin type that has the ability to make the game instantly play the end credits in pikmin 5, genius i know.

In the case of enemies they still might be, but something like an indestructible exposed wire should allow you to think in a way that actually makes logical sense: if you shouldn't touch an exposed wire... should an enemy either? So imagine: you swarm your yellow pikmin like in 1 and 2 (in a line formation), and if this line of yellow pikmin goes through any source of electricity, this electrifies the entire line of yellow pikmin (like in 3!) except it's fully controlled by you this time (unlike in 3). You could use this as an alternative (possibly fastest, depending on the type) way to damage enemies, or even as a way to "catch" a whole bunch of small enemies in your electrified bug zapper net made of yellows, or to power on electric appliances like in Pikmin 3, possibly for shortcuts as you described (and here it'd be done in a freeform way where you get to figure out yourself where the electric conga line can go, and nothing would be explicitly spelled out for you). Electricity probably shouldn't be an instakill in this scenario (as funny as it would be), neither to enemies nor to your own non-yellow pikmin, but would still be Lethal If You're Too Slow just like fire/water/poison is to your squad. Just make sure you only have yellows with you when you're doing the electric conga line. also we should get Bomb Pikmin (they die when they explode)

It definitely feels like the ever increasing abundance of Pikmin types was going to make redundancy inevitable; that said: • If electricity was more like a panic or confusion hazard, that might split the difference between insta-kills and just having them inert. You could even have the lightning chain between pukmin to the pilot, temporarily reversing controls or something. • If the fans or other general updrafts were exclusive to Yellows and their glide-able ears, that could also be... something. • Thinking on the Glow Pikmins' special charge ability, kinda wondering if giving every Pikmin type spmething like that might differentiate them (even if Just Adding Supers feels like a bridge too far to me), Yellows could have a charge that stuns non-electric foes or something.

How did I get a gifted membership for this channel despite never watching you stream? No one will ever know, but I will say, I'm glad it's this channel 'cuz you deserve some extra moolah in the money pocket. Also, coincidentally, Merry Christmas!

it says a lot that the *only* reason outside of mandatory stuff I used Yellows in Pikmin 3 was for Daddy Long Legs on Ultra Spicy.

I only played the first two, but based on this it seems like it would be sweet to have some additional yellow capabilities -- - if you have a bunch together, they generate static electricity to defend themselves - but if you make a wire of them, you can make a fence - making a wire near water does big damage to things in the water nearby - somehow a way to trigger bombs with electricity for an even bigger boom I guess we'll see when Switch 2: Pikmin Machine comes out what they've done with it.

I miss my bomb squad from Pikmin 1. Sure they were often low in numbers, but that was more to my sociopathic leadership ("Your job is to explode") than lack of use. If they were to have their gimmicks expanded upon, perhaps being able to use bombs more effectively (larger throwing range, higher throwing speed) or leaning into them being more aerodynamic perhaps other Pikmin could be able to throw them - like if when obtaining the Libra in Pikmin 1 there was no geyser to easily get your captain up another level.

I think if yellow pikmin threw the treasure/fruit they were carrying at enemies when bringing it back, they could have a niche as a "I want this back safely" type of support. That, and maybe give them enemies their throw can reach that flying pikmin can't, or make flying pikmin have 0.1 attack power. I'd also be okay with yellow pikmin perhaps being faster at "building" or repairing structures than other types. Idk.

Yellows should also have a passive damage effect of a chance to stun enemies for a short while.

Old machinery left behind by 'the inhabitants' of PNF 404 that create shortcuts but only when powered by Yellows, areas where the hazard is a literally electrified floor with a destroyable source only at yellow pikmin throw height, and Yellows having unique carryable objects that give off electricity similar to the firestarters for red pikmin. Fixed.
