"Tall Tales with True Queens" is a short film that offers a glimpse into a budding trend that is reshaping culture. Drag Queen Story Hour is a fresh addition to the lineup of children's rooms in a growing number of American public libraries nationwide. While young children embrace the sequins, bright colors and celebration of a spectrum of identity, certain adults are moved to outrage and protest.
Directors statement:
This film started when our friends in Brooklyn started having and interacting more with kids, and taking their kids to Drag Queen Story hour events.
The plot thickened when we looked up the event. We learned there was some controversy surrounding it...but while there was coverage of the event itself, we couldn't find much about how the event started; why the people who participated in it and attended felt it was important; the story behind the protests; and last but not last, how kids react to it.
We spent a year filming, learning more about the event, and getting to know the communities involved. In the process of working on it the event became significantly more popular, and more controversial. As audience members and social followers swelled, protests grew from a handful of small protests to a long list of large and well-reported ones. Throughout it all, we remained captivated, amused, and touched by the response of the kids to the events. We are excited about sharing this remarkable tale-and the messages of our subjects-far and wide.
