SAME! That's how I've always interpreted this scene: that Aaravos is getting Viren to admit that, yeah, he wants to conquer Xadia. I mean, it is totally possible that that was never Viren's goal and that Aaravos is just manipulating him to go along with what he wants, but I'm not so sure about that. There are several moment in seasons 1 and 2 that always make me think "Okay, I get it, Lord Virus, you wanna conquer Xadia and these "noble ideals" are mostly you just trying to justify said conquering. I just love viren and aaravos in this scene as complex villains. Viren clearly deep down doesn’t want to conquer in the end at first he truly wants his people to thrive but as he stated before it’s difficult when a ‘knife’ is being held against all of humanity. Viren is a villan who is run by fear but that doesn’t mean that’s an excuse for his past decisions but I fully understand where his motivation is coming from. Aaravos is different on the other hand. He’s more like the devil in this scenario and how he’s tempting viren using manipulation tactics like repeating an idea over and over again till viren finally agrees. It’s easy to find evil ideas good when fear is involved especially when that fear is about self preservation. Aaravos is truly a dangerous villan as he knows how people operate and can manipulate almost anyone especially people as vulnerable and gullible like viren. I wouldn’t be supprised if aaravos knew exactly how all this would go down way before this point which is terrifying to think about. If aaravos wasn’t around to plant ideas I wouldn’t think viren would go as far as what he did but then again this is viren. His fear alone would probably drive him down that same path anyways.

Viren's problem is that he doesn't really have any idea how to achieve his long term goal. Aaravos does. Aaravos can fill in the gap in the planning between start and stop. That's why Viren needs Aaravos. Viren is plenty powerful, although Aaravos is undeniably more so, but Viren simply isn't as good a planner as Aaravos is.

One thing that really strikes me about Viren is just how... stupidly arrogant he is. For a generally pragmatic and intelligent man, he's soooo easily manipulated. And only because of the power Aaravos can provide him. He's so wrapped up in getting his way that he barely stops to think about the EXTREMELY obvious fact that Aaravos cares about himself and what HE wants. Not what Viren wants. Sadly, it's only Aaravos' plan, not Viren's. Think about Avizandum's age-nearly 100-1000 years old. He must have immense power, but it's now pointless for Viren to seek it. The stone doesn't hold power; it holds blame. Viren wanted # power and leadership ( when do they never mixed ), but since viren wants to rule by taking out the strongest dragon, gaining power from him is useless. No more dragons mean no more power growth, only the ability to kill those who rely on magic. Viren's dream isn't even his own anymore is his real death because magic damage him making him living on magic no magic no more him. If magic harms you, attracting attention. It wasn't Viren's choice; it was forced on him. People won't listen to him; they'll fight him because he took their power. Viren seeks to rule people, not magic.
