The "Ash of Fallen" spell requires the ashes of a dead creature or person, which are sprinkled into a lit blood candle. The incantation is spoken (backwards, of course), and then the user blows into the flame, which spawns smokey figures that take the form of whoever's ashes were used. The role they play is dependent on the last words of the spell (or first, when reversed). So yes, Viren uses the ashes to conjure smokey figures of the dead Moonshadow Elf party. And because he designates them to be assassins, that's the role they play as he sends them to attack the other kingdoms. However, the video failed to notice that Claudia also uses the Ash of Fallen spell, because it mistranslates her "of fallen" as "and bone". Claudia's version in season 1 is "Ash of fallen, rise again: smokey seekers". She uses the ashes of Xadian wolves, simply because that's what she has on hand, and has them seek out Rayla, Callum, and Ez in the tunnels. The Ash of Fallen spell could presumably be used to conjure a smokey dance partner, smokey chauffeur, smokey body guard, or whatever you want. And it would take the form of whatever ashes you used. It's unclear whether the smokey figures are limited to performing tasks their living forms could have done though. You could conjure a smokey mount in the form of a horse or dragon, but perhaps not in the form of a child or a mouse. Judging by what we see in the show, the smokey figures have the ability to interact with solid objects themselves (the wolf bites Rayla, the assassins equip their former weapons), but they're impervious to outside forces (Rayla's blades pass right through).

You never see him in his corrupted form before he did that spell and he also did his best to hide it from Harrow by never looking at him. He just says: "I will leave you with your grief" looking at the floor as he walks away. I also believe he stole Sarai's soul and not just her dying breath. You can hear a faint "Noooo" from her voice after Harrow throws the spear killing the dragon king. That's not what she would have wanted Harrow to do but she was bound to the spear because of Viren.

I didn't realize that Dark spells are English spoken backwards. It has to be actual in universe canon. Cause Callum never heard Claudia say the spell he used to unbind the chain. Claudia said "Slithering steel bind them", he used "Slithering steel unbind". And the spell worked. Callum figuring this out, and how to make it work in his situation makes him an unquestionable magical genius.

@@rutger5000 Idk, they're always a bit fuzzy with time in this show. But assuming the book is well indexed, finding a spell to unbind chains would probably take no more than half a minute tops. Also, wouldn't he have to look up and search for the creature he needs anyway? If he has to rummage through Claudia's bag for a worm anyway, looking up a fairly simple spell in the book shouldn't take that much longer.

I binged watched the entire series in a day not too long ago. I loved the hell out of it, couldn't stop! My one itty-bitty complaint about this universe though is their portrayal of dark magic, how it's "irredeemably evil" and such. I tend to be drawn toward dark spellcasting classes in various games, warlocks and necromancers and such. I always RPed as someone who just considered darkness as an opposite of light, neither good nor evil. The Dragon Prince universe kind of made me question that and feel bad. xD

I thought that they used universal dust that could make "smoky anything" But I don't think dark magic works that way. I think that was actually the dust of wolves and the assassins who came to kill Harrow. Them killing Harrow was awful, but they never deserved that!

Some people have said that Dark Magic isn't explicitly said to be evil and the only thing we know is that the main characters don't like it. I think they're forgetting how it's corrupting Viren, and is currently corrupting Claudia's mind and soul.

I get why people might say that. They probably don't understand why Rayla was upset with Callum for using Dark Magic with a creature that was already dead or why the humans couldn't just take pieces of creatures like their horns or their snot and leave them living but I think the nature of Dark Magic whittles away a person's value of individual life. Viren looks at humanity as a whole, he sees things solely pragmatically and he probably believes that his goal is what's best for humanity but he really doesn't care. When Sarai died, he was literally pulling out a jar to capture her dying breath; I mean, he did it because it could kill Thunder in the future but can you get anymore insensitive than that? Besides that, what Viren wants might not be what's best for humanity. In fact, the way the stories going makes it seem like he might have convinced everyone, including himself, that what he wants is humanity's prosperity but what he really wants is power.

Do the characters who do dark magic speak in reverse English or does it magically come out reversed when they speak? Some sounds, like /t/ and /g/ can’t be pronounced in reverse, since they need you to increase the pressure inside your mouth and then suddenly release it at a particular point. Suddenly releasing it before there’s any pressure differential makes no sense.

Ok so they seem to have an interesting magic system involving dark magic and normal magic. With primal magic its like you a bringing a thing into reality by saying and writing its name. Like "fulmunis" is lightning. And by writing the rune and saying the name it brings the thing into existence. With dark magic you are telling a material to due something. And it has to have some accuracy to work. Hence why Claudia saying "Bring life to these limbs" didn't work. A.) she didn't address the material (But this might just be me nitpicky) B.) Its his spine that doesn't work, not his limbs. Viren using longer and more complex commands also shows how much more experienced he is than Claudia at this. Finally, that last thing that Aaravos casts. I think you are able to use humans for dark magic. He was clearly using the same rules as I talked about before. Except he was using Viren as the material. Creepy.

Fun fact: The german voice actor for lord viren is the same one for hawk moth/ gabriel agreste in miraculous ladybug. Gabriel Agreste: Lost his wife, is a bad father to his son adrien agreste, is the villain in the series. Lord viren: Lost his wife, is a bad father to his son soren, is the villain in the series.

i believe you forget the spell which claudia casted in season 3 when she casted the protection shield spell against the fire from the dragon

I believe she drew a rune and then said a draconic word, if you were listening, that would be primal magic, well both since it was a rune and it used an essence of another being, but Claudia never spoke backwards so it wasn't fully dark magic. It was just Sun magic corrupted with dark magic, creating a circular barrier made of Sun and dark magic. Same with "noctu igne" allowing Claudia to realise an orb of pure black fire, or something.
