When Melkor incarnates his spiritual power into Arda, this spiritual element is not distributed homogeneously. It mostly concentrates in the element of gold. I can develop a separate theoretical perspective for the reason for this: The light of the Two Trees of Valinor is actually a sub-creation product of Yavanna's spiritual incarnation and a reflection of the Secret Fire. Melkor's interest in Laurelin's light and therefore the element of gold may be due to this as a reflection of his desire to possess the Secret Fire. Laurelin and the element of gold can be associated through the similarity of the spectrum of the light they emit. I believe that this metaphysical phenomenon underlies the interest and greed of dragons, the embodiment of Melkor's will, for gold. If dragons have a mind, then they have an underlying soul or, more generally, a spiritual phenomenon. This explains the metaphysical basis for their ability to psychologically manipulate and influence a target being by manifesting ósanwë.
