Today we are looking at the life and art of Remedios Varo, an influential and unique artist in Mexican history, who painted about her experiences and the anxieties of growing to prominence in the time of the Spanish Civil War and World War 2. Thank you so much for watching.

Hey! Hope you are doing well and are having a great start to the year. Thanks so much for watching, it always means a lot to me. Sorry I was gone a little while there, I've been trying to focus on how I can be more regular with my upload schedule for this year and have been working the past few months to make sure that I can get a video out roughly every month from now on which is something I'm going to try hard to do in 2023. I've got some projects I'm already working on that I'm really excited about and I'm looking forward to seeing where these go. Thanks again, and I'll see you again soon!

Also the symbolism is sometimes so literal in her art, which is great because I think it helps people understand what she is trying to convey, like the magician having a star shaped face. She creates for herself but also for others.

@SpaghettyLuvsU 10 ай бұрын
Yeah, I also enjoyed that aspect. Use of symbolism is a tough balancing act: too obscure and no one will understand the metaphor; too obvious and you're just making political cartoons. Varo really seems to hit that sweet spot where it's accessible without being shallow.

Seeing her work live at an exhibit in my city of Guadalajara completely changed my life, she's one of my biggest influences as an artist and quite the role model in various ways Worth noting is that her last painting is called "Naturaleza Muerta Resucitando", which translates to "Still Life Resucitating". What a poetic last note to leave behind, even if it wasn't intended to be

She's one of my favourite artists along with Leonora Carrington. The dreamlike styling with which they represent the mundane world surrounding us always stroke a chord with me. I've loved each and every one of your videos ever since I first found your channel and also share many of your views on art, culture, magic and ideas. As a Jewish man from Indiana I can understand a little of her struggle. My family came from many places, and few made it to their destination. Art is not merely an escape; it is the door drawn open to the next place.

I remember seeing one of Varo's paintings when I was quite young. I never knew who painted it, or even what the name was, but I loved that painting, so when I saw it pop up in this video I immediately went to search for the name. I have since learned that the name of the painting translates to The Creation of Birds. It's probably one of my favorite pieces ever.

A couple months back, me and my GF attended an exhibition of Varo's life and work. There were paintings and sketches alongside personal items (photos, letters, little boxes, figurines and rocks that she collected), books on her and even promotional material. My GF (who's kind of witchy) noticed a lot of references to witchcraft not only in her work, but among her personal belongings. She suspects Varo was a witch of sorts, or that at least she had deep knowledge of the occult.
@krlosz1996
@krlosz1996 Жыл бұрын
I think we both saw the same collection of her works and belongings haha Varo was 1000% interested in witchcraft, she was raised near the forests of Zugarramurdi, a town in the Spanish autonomous community of Navarra, famous for its witch activity and trials during the inquisition era, I'm sure Remedios was fascinated by this given the matriarchal nature of the pagan religious practices of the euskera-speaking communities in Spain

She's one of my favourite surreal artists together with Leonora Carrington and Max Ernst. Here's an interesting thing: in our Flemish dialect over here in Belgium the old word 'varro' actually means 'paint'. In English there is a variant which you can read in the lyrics of the Tam Lin ballad 'woe betide her ill-farred face'. 'Farred' again meaning painted. It could be a word of Celtic origin and Spain had Celtic inhabitants at one time. You can still see the remnants in Galicia. Nomen est omen, the Latin proverb says. Maybe she was destined to become a painter as her name already stated that. :-) Great video, thanks.

In Mexico she is very recognized! (One of her paintings was the cover for an elementary school book every child in mexico had for a decade) Most people here once they learn about her art, they tend to put her above Frida in terms of praise and admiration. Which I find super interesting because most foreigners when they think of female surrealist artists they recognize and praise Frida more (her house museum is always packed with tourists lol). So thank you for this video, I'm glad more people can learn about her and her mesmerizing artworks.

It's a giallo film inspired by Orestes & Max Ernst is the killer's namesake and his targets are named after Meredith Tanning, Leonora Carrington and Kati Horna. Varo's work seems to be oozing with Jungian concepts and images. The thought struck me almost instantly after seeing her work, so naturally I had to inquire about any relation between the two. Searching the artists name along side Jung's yielded a book I really want to read. Dennis Pottenger's "Alchemy, Jung, and Remedios Varo: Cultural Complexes and the Redemptive Power of the Abjected Feminine" sounds extremely interesting, but is a little pricey for the print edition. "Alchemy, Jung, and Remedios Varo offers a depth psychological analysis of the art and life of Remedios Varo, a Spanish surrealist painter. The book uses Varo’s paintings in a revolutionary way: to critique the patriarchal underpinnings of Jungian psychology, alchemy, and Surrealism, illuminating how Varo used painting to address cultural complexes that silence female expression. The book focuses on how the practice of alchemical psychology, through the power of imagination and the archetypal Feminine, can lead to healing and transformation for individuals and culture. Alchemy, Jung, and Remedios Varo offers the first in-depth psychological treatment of the role alchemy played in the friendship between Varo and Leonora Carrington―a connection that led to paintings that protest the pitfalls of patriarchy."

Really appreciate you making this video. I've always enjoyed hunting down the surrealist works of female artists, as women surrealists were very much swept under the rug for simply being women. This video seems to have come at an important time for me personally. All of your videos are absolute gold.
