The old Original Xboxes are from the capacitor plague era and the PSUs are slowly but surely rotting away (and eating tons of internal space). A USB C mod would be amazing for them. Alternatively people have managed to use Pico PSUs to power them using an external brick.

The OG Xbox uses around 70ish watts, so you would need a pretty substantial power brick to power it. The PS2 is around 50ish watts, but it's still pretty substantial when compared to something like the Dreamcast which uses 20ish watts. So the Dreamcast is easy to do this for in comparison to the Xbox or PS2.

I love a lot about this mod! If I could make a couple suggestions, maybe a little extra bits of plastic to left and right of where the board plugs in to physically block an accidental misaligned plugin of the board, and perhaps a redesign down the line to add a screw hole (plus a spacer underneath) so the board can be nice and securely screwed into the Dreamcast. Other than that, you've thought of everything!

I got my Dreamcast about eight years ago. And I was really disappointed to see that it didn't want to read my discs. If it did, it returned to the menu screen after a couple of minutes. I even added solder to the pin connectors to tighten their grip to the mainboard, which did the trick. But if I had known that there would be such a thing as a USB-C power supply for it, I think I wouldn't have done that. Nevertheless, I finally want to give my Dreamcast the modern upgrades it deserves, which is why I got the USB-C mod. And I'm seriously considering to get more, so long as they are easy to install like this one.

I left a thumbs up. If I could leave a thumbs WAY up I would've done it! This is an awesome product which is greatly needed and long overdue. I put it right up there, or maybe even above, HDMI mods. I don't have a Dreamcast, but I'll be keeping my eyes open for the Genesis, 2600, NES, and Xbox (hopefully). Awesome work.

Awesome work RetroSix! To answer your question of possible mods for the future... The one thing I would REALLY want for the Dreamcast is some way to make it connect to the internet. The DreamPi together with dreamcast live are awesome porjects. A nice mod would be to easily connect a Raspberry Pi Zero 2W (Wi-Fi !!!) to the Clean power 5V, + phone cable with a 18V step-up conversion drawn from the Clean Power as well.... But yeah, the biggest issue is just getting hold of those pesky compatible DELL and Lenovo modems.

​@@RetroSix well you need to be able to connect the RPi to the Dreamcast communication port some way or another. Currently that can only be done with using an RPi, the Dell or Lenovo RD02-D400 usb-modems (which are unnecessarily pricey) connected to the Dreamcast modem with a custom cable that feeds 9V (NTSC) or 18V (PAL) between both ends. At this point I thought someone would've been able to make a modern Network replacement board for the modem casing. But I guess it's a beast of a project and due to how few games are supported and how few Dreamcasts are out in the wild. I guess no one has been willing to spend the time on such a big project just for the sake of preserving niche online features... The ultimate solution would've required modem emulation (due to game compatibility), Networking Driver + dedicated Dreamcast software to setup Wi-Fi, but yeah, the easier solution would be to just stick with LAN instead. That way you wouldn't need to interface with the network board. Ultimately someone still needs to build that modem emulation code and a compatible network board for the DC. And even though I am a developer myself, this would require substantial amount of research for me personally.

the mod looks clean and love how simple it is, the only thing i would say im concern about it is that its only held in place by the pins from the console and nothing is under it to have it firm in place. but other than that i like this mod, and im interested in it for my dreamcast.

Already been converting my megadrives and master systems for lower heat and different power options, This is a nice tidy solution though, It's probably too low volume to bother with but some kind of daisychainable version for the MD/MEGACD/32X to run them off one plug would be nice.

An intresting one to look at would be consoles that use external power supplies like the CDI which have two voltages 12V / 3V lines and use a phone wire style connector.

Awesome mod. Looking forward picking one up. Does it work well with GDEMU? :) I think the only difference is that that there is far less resistance on the 12V rail. the only mod I am looking for now is an internal rpi zero 2 dreampi wi-fi mod. However, getting hold of cheap DELL modem is getting extremely hard these days. I wish there was a off-the-shelf mod solution to connect the Dreamcast to the internet, without relying on depricated USB-modems.

@@RetroSixI would absolutely love if you made some PSOne shells (PS1 slim model) as I can’t find any online) Also I bought one of those Dreamcast shells you sell (a yellow one) but for some reason the power button doesn’t align with my power switch, on closer inspection the power button has a different angled groove. I had to reuse my old Dreamcast power button on my new shell, could it just be a factory error or is my Dreamcast model different to the 3rd party shell Dreamcast? 🤔

Hello, i have modded my Dreamcast myself with DCHDMI, Terraonion Mode with a 2,5" Samsung 870 EVO 500GB SSD and did the controllerboard upgrade with the selfresetting fuse, batteryholder and cap. With the original PSU everything is running fine, when i replace it with the CleanPower the Dreamcast does reset itself when it loads into the games mostly after the intro, i've used a 30W Gan and a 120W Gan charger from Ugreen, they have the same rating or higher as the charger which is on your shopsite. What do you think can be the issue? Kind regards

Probably getting little hot. We have heat sinks on new version you can try sticking some self adhesive heat sinks on the underside of CleanPower

Do you offer any color options for the 3D printed part? The DC had a few official color options and there are a lot of 3rd party colored housings out and about. My Dreamcast for example has a Green replacement shell.

I can make them in any colors. I thought only white was official except rare black one? and all others third party. But if you can provide some color images I can make them

@@RetroSix Thanks for the response. You are indeed correct white is the most common color of the Dreamcast with a black sports edition being the second most common but still far rarer than the white. There are some official other colors but they were Japanese limited editions and are probably not going to pop up very often.

Interesting idea, not enough to make me change out my DreamPower but from a design perspective it would be nice to see you utilise the front left screw hole the stock PSU uses, just to hold the new PSU in place. The likes of the aforementioned DreamPower and Pico PSU’s use that hole, and while I appreciate these smaller boards don’t weigh a lot, using the PSU pins alone to hold the PCB would put me off.

We can make a 3D bracket for that if people want to print it for sure. According to users reporting to myself during making this mod, neither DreamPower or Pico PSUs can handle GDEmu without sporadic crashes FYI, it was a big request that this board should support that properly. We have ran this on a GDEmu modded console now for 8 days constant (never turned it off yet) without issue.

@@SEGAGuys DreamPower and DreamPSU both had reports of almost all DC external power supplies introducing noise to video also. This can happen with any power supply, you need a good isolated low noise power supply, which USB-C is super easy to find (we sell them for like £14). Plus the added benefit of USB-C now not just another custom DC power supply just for that console

@@AngelSix Not saying USB-C doesn’t have clear benefits in terms of the lack of a power brick/supply being needed, but DreamPower (and PicoPSU if assembled by a trustworthy modder) should never be associated with DreamPSU which Voultar tore to shreds as it’s not even designed specifically for Dreamcast. I’ve used a Chrisz2600 PicoPSU and now a DreamPower by Coaster2K, and neither had resetting/crash issues or noise in the picture. I just think it’s important to focus on the benefits of this product rather than try to tear down others by comparison. My sole concern with USB-C would be the connection on the back of the console, in terms of tightness. I’ve bought new laptops with USB-C and the cable barely makes a click when it goes in. Now you won’t move a console as often as a laptop, but for me it’s important that cable is in and it’s secure. The biggest benefit, as I said, is that it’s a simple USB-C cable and plug, but in two years with the DreamPower I’ve had zero issues with it. Absolutely none.

Even on our discord poeple mentioning those issues and in comments of this very video people asking if it works with GDEmu as others don't. Without the green leds it would be cool. Why does it need to bling-bling? Is it neccessary, does it make the thing more "cool"? U cant see it why the console is closed, and it ruins the overall look in an transcluent shell. Really sad, i would have bought that, but it seems i have to stick with dreampsu. "Less is more" fits perfectly in this case.
