The lyrics are very significant because they were a gift from the producer made especially for Britney. In 2003 Britney was at her peak and chooses The-Dream to work with her on her new album and they create "Me agains the music". Britney invites Madonna and convinces the label to release the song as the first single. This puts The-Dream on the map and makes him one of the most sought after producers in America. By 2007, Britney is going through a very scandalous stage and The-Dream declares: "I saw all Britney's problems on the magazines and I said to myself "My friend is in trouble, I'll write her a big hit to get her back to number one where she belongs" and so Umbrella is born, which somehow tells the story of The-Dream's feelings towards Britney and his protective attitude towards his disgraced friend. But after the song was created, she has her umbrella incident and her label rejects the single to avoid the easy joke.
