Can you imagine being a little kid and having a lullaby like this, I did! Gate Mouth Brown was my neighbor as a child!!! No wonder I love the blues!!!

As a child in the early 1960s I use to spend time in my grandmother's bookshop. Down the street about three houses and across the street was a bar (Eddie Price's) right off Tulane''s campus. One day outside of the bar, on the back of a flatbed truck there was a band playing music I had never heard before in my short life. I was mesmerized. I've been trying to play guitar like that now for over 50 years. Of course it was Clarence Gatemouth Brown.... I don't remember what his backup band called themselves back then. But dear God that was one hell of a thing.

This is fantastic! Carlos changes his characteristic style and plays pure blues, Gatemouth kills it on fiddle and guitar, and... I really have the highest respect for Eric Demmer on sax, he takes a short solo but my hair stood on end... the tone, the soul of that man. I don't know why Eric Demmer is not a superstar himself, recognitionwise I mean.

Thanks for the blues, Gatemouth. RIP. And, hats off to the great Eric Demmer, on sax; still alive and well.

Best Blues fiddle I’ve ever heard. Gate had such a unique style. You can hear the T Bone influence but Gate threw in a touch of Cajun and country. Truly one of the greatest multi instrumentalist Bluesman to walk the planet. Great to see these young guys laying it down. Carlos is diggin it big time🇺🇸

I did the sound for Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown several times when his band was Gate's Express, later known as Louisiana's LeRoux who had several hits, including "New Orleans Ladies" written by guitarist and lead singer, Jeff Pollard and bass player Leon Medica.

My first ever Blues LP was Gatemouth's "Gates on Heat"...led me on a journey in the Blues I can't get off. His use of guitars, electric violin, harmonica and Hammond organ still blows me away. This great track was on it. Here brilliantly played by Gatemouth with Carlos Santana.

I saw him do a solo acoustic show in Dallas at Poor David's Pub. I requested this & he played it. The Dallas Morning News called it one of the top ten shows of the year. He packed a pistol every where he went & collected the money himself from the promoter.

Gate is one of my favorite guitarists of all time. He had a feel for swing that was almost supernatural. I met him in The Yale Hotel in Vancouver and blurted out that he was a big musical hero of mine. He gave me that sly grin and asked if I had any weed on me! I said I didn't just as a friend walked by who I knew always carried weed, so he took him out for a quick hit or two. Later on he played a song for me I had requested which I thought he'd forgotten all about. A great character and on hell of a guitarist!

I was at that show (late 80’s). Gate trusted me to keep his pipe loaded that night! Great show. Hate thoroughly enjoyed himself, as did all in attendance. After the show we went with him to a late night/wee hours Soul Food restaurant. I had smothered pork chops, Gate had chitterlings, my buddy decided to have what Gate was having but didn’t get far into them. Gate teased him about it in a typically Gatemouth manner !

Gol dang! 2 things: 1) I wish there were a LOT more 'nad-powered violinists in the world; 2) I wish Carlos would try this hard to assess a genre and craft his solos to fit more often. He's EXTREMELY good and interesting when he gets out of his box, but he seems to feel people want the cliches.
