I have been playing this video ever since it came up in my playlist last week; I can't get enough of it; pure, sincere, unpretentious Gospel Music singing. You can sense that they meant every word and every note!

Yes, Cissy Houston. You are a gospel singer!

The Drinkards changed not only the game, but the world. Cissy Houston was the baby so she was their little Michael. She took a piece of each of their styles.and incorporated to become the best of that generation of the family. She had Lee Warrick's (Nana's) top soprano, grace and phrasing, Marie Epps' (Reebie's) bottom belt and growl and Anne Moss' stylings, middle and creativity. At the same time Cissy, Felicia Moss and Whitney (Nippie) have their cousin Leontyne Price's operatic range and abilities. Cissy and Dee Dee Warrick who also borrows from the entire family are often considered the most versatile. Dionne Warwick has much of her mother's top and eloquence. While growing up the twin 1st cousins born the same year, Felicia and Whitney were often compared vocally with Felicia many times coming out on top. As a matured voice Felicia sounds similar to Dee Dee and Cissy but her time on the road with Tramaine Hawkins and that influence has set her apart. Felicia's powerful instrument makes her quiet as kept one of the family's best.

Thanks for that history lesson. Didn't know about the Leontyne Price connection or that one of the sang with Tramaine Hawkins. Tramaine was my fave female gospel singer, and Whitney reminded me of Tramaine when she first arrived on the scene and was one of the reasons I initially liked Whitney. I wish that they would have worked together. I sometimes wondered if Whitney had gone the gospel route, if she'd still be with us. God bless.

Well, if you're referring to Lee and Cissy, Dionne was already an adult by the time this performance was filmed. This clip is from the 60s, although what of which part of the 60s, I am unsure.

Wow....now this is that kinda of gospel music i grew up on. Cissy was working this song out and she was on point too. Had me ready to do something special here at work as i am listening to this. These people i work around wanted to see Whitney's mom in action in the old days so i took them here and they are in shock at hearing her. I asked them....where do you think Whitney got it from? That singing gene runs deep in her family....real deep. Goes back many moons before Whitney was even born.

I post these videos to pay tribute to the artists of the era. The entire Drinkard & Warrick family din't receive the recognition they so well deserve. It's only natural that the name Whitney pops up since she is a part of the family. Whatever happens to a family member they're still family. It's a disservice to her mom who loves her dearly for anyone to shoot arrows at her daughter. Unless you've made no mistakes in your life just, be careful of the stones you throw. Greetings Walker Family. I've been in broadcasting since the 60's and for many years the Drinkard Singers and Ensemble were the Theme song for our entire station . In 1959 my group had the Drinkdard singers, Clara Ward and the Imperial gospel singers as our guest. We went all the way to the Appollo Theatre just to see the Drinkards. So you see I have much love and respect for them and will be featuring them on my sunday show in a few weeks which you can hear online Peace and Blessings

WONDERFUL!! This group could really "sang!" I've got no problem with people referring to Whitney Houston since she is Cissy's daughter and gospel is her roots. Sad that such a lovely talented woman got into drugs and got married to the abusive Bobby Brown. Maybe if she turned back to her gospel roots (strong gospel like this) she could get the strength to rebuild her life. Back to the Drinkards: now this, strong, raw, singing is, for me, the REAL gospel! Holy Ghost is here!

@lemons82 Fact: Miss Whitney Houston was indeed the greatest singer of all time---period. She simply threw away her God-given talent, one that will never ever be replaced.. On "The Magic of Believing" album is credited to Dionne & The Drinkard Singers (Scepter Records); I remember an interview with Cissy, who said she went into the studio with Dionne to do that album but who were the others? Special thanks to Florence Greenberg for allowing Dionne & The Drinkards to make that album; RIP Florence

KojiRecords In Heaven, that voice is restored back to her....Whitney's power and range and clarity and diction are back in divine working order and she is using that gift to uplift and praise God. She is well and wonderful and safe from this cruel world.

@lemons82 Your illogical and really hysterical comment proves my point: Whitney not only has nothing to do with The Drinkard Singers, maybe if she listened to the message of the group she would have not touched the crack pipe; any Whitney references would be justified had she been a member of The Drinkard Singers---which she was not. Give respect to The Drinkard Singers by posting comments here about THEM----and what a wonderful performance they give in this rare footage; thanks for posting
