Your comment about "Less is more" is spot on. The viewers imagination can often fill in the blanks in an interesting way that the studio never thought of. HP Lovecraft said: "The oldest and strongest emotion of mankind is fear, and the oldest and strongest kind of fear is fear of the unknown." Leaving out information is often a better way to tell a story than telling your audience everything.
@rigbygaming829617 сағат бұрын
Exactly. Exposition (or too much of it) is usually what kills any horror, dread, or suspense in films. It’s a fine line though: too much ambiguity and too much convoluted pacing/structure can also lose the audience. I get irritated by critical reviews of horror/suspense films that have the main criticism of “answered questions”. I.e. the reason they don’t recommend a film is because of this, which is usually an intentional part of the story in order to be increase discomfort & dread in the viewer.
@DrFrankNStein-sf2ww17 сағат бұрын

@srobbins-ukraine14 сағат бұрын
@@rigbygaming8296 You're right - it's a very fine line, and it's often easier for the writers to just say what's going on and what the characters have to do. Sadly, this makes the viewer passive and discourages imagination. Who/what is Nosferatu? Why does he do what he does? Where does he come from? Seeing him in the movie, I actually felt sorry for him! What kind of miserable life does he lead? Odd to feel sympathy for an evil character, but sometimes I do, just because I think we all have good and evil mixed.

It’s a refreshing take on a monster flick. To be so reserved with its main showcase yet forthcoming with details and hints that don’t have to tell you everything but rather show you and allow you to immerse yourself. At 2 1/2 hrs long it didn’t feel it, I looked at my watch but once just to see how far in The nite I had come for I feared it was ending soon. Excellent performances all around and the lighting, ambience and atmosphere steal the show. I feel I could go back for a repeat watch and it was perfect to see on a solemn rainy nite.

This goes to show the overreliance on remakes isn't the problem, it's a symptom of a bigger issue: you can't make anything good without actual talent working on it, even if you're using old successful ideas.

Project filled with such passion and visceral atmosphere and immersive storytelling that you genuinely almost can't believe you're sitting in a movie theater. A project that is simple in summary and yet so thoroughly elevated by every aspect of its creation. They playing the less is more and yet even when they do finally show him they still keep him horrifying truly great acting great atmosphere cinematography was phenomenal and that one shot of Holt riding out town brought me back to older movies. Yep. I'm going to see this one today and I am stoked. My blueprint going into this one isn't the 1922 silent movie, but rather the 1979 adaptation by Werner Herzog, which I consider an underrated horror masterpiece. Robert Eggers was the right man for the job and it looks like he didn't disappoint.
@elenakushnir960518 сағат бұрын
Werner Herzog's film is quite highly rated. But I'm a Russian film critic, so I kind of have to say it )) I agree that Eggers's film is more of an homage to Herzog (as far as I can see from the trailer, as well as Lily-Rose Depp's resemblance to Isabelle Adjani). I also see the influence of Shadow of the Vampire, in which Willem Dafoe played Max Schreck/Count Orlok. I haven't seen the new film yet, in Russia it can only be found in a terrible pirated copy. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

I love when a movie can be art Andrei tarkovsky was a great example of this love stalker. Very few filmmakers are artists, but Robert eggers clearly is one. I have not seen any of his other works, but I think I will have to after seeing this film. truly I love films I love art and quite frankly most aren't but I'm glad that Nosferatu met, and greatly exceeded the expectations that people had for it, becoming ,I think ,an instant classic.

One of the coolest movie experiences I’ve had in a long time. I thought it perfectly walked the line between artsy and great storytelling. The acting was great. I was never jarred back into reality by a bad scene. And after decades of CGI monsters, the prosthetics and “less is more” approach really worked for me. This was a rare case where I went in with pretty high expectations and I would say it even exceeded what I’d hoped it would be. Definitely seeing it again before it leaves theaters.

@alexisdetocqueville9964 Nosferatu will never really be so scary because it's a long, complex drama that makes you taste the impotence of the victims as Orloc (or Dracula, on Bram Stocker's book) progress in his plan. It also makes you lament the fate of the characters by anticipation.
