Drach, I'm afraid you left something huge out of the answer about intelligence during the Guadalcanal campaign. On May 28, 1942, too late to do any good for the Midway operation because the Americans already knew and were deploying their forces, the Japanese Navy finally switched their codes, from JN-25b to JN-25c. It would be six months before the US was able to crack JN-25c and begin reading the Japanese mail again, and this time period encompasses essentially all the significant actions of the campaign outside of the Japanese withdrawal at the end of January, 1943. Local considerations like you mentioned would have hampered the ability to utilize intelligence from radio intercepts, but the change in codes made it physically impossible until the new code was cracked.
@Drachinifel2 жыл бұрын
This is true, although not all transmissions relating to naval ops were made in the new codes, so there was some signals Intel available :)

Sorry for your loss, Drach. Working through emotions as one is also involved in the practicalities is a challenge. My last surviving grandparent went on in '15. I had to fly across North America to back up my mother while she made arrangements, closed down his home, and dealt with the grieving and well-wishes from a huge number of family plus his friends, peers, and former coworkers. It was stressful but at the same time bittersweetly joyful because at his age and health he was looking forward to it. When I was a kid he was strict, reserved, and scary; he did occasionally tell stories, though. As he aged and especially after retirement he mellowed, he shared more, and he became an absolute gem with the little kids and the wives. He was a rock of support when my better half got cancer (my granny had passed from that scourge), he helped both of us separately and together work through it. On top of him as a person I miss the anecdotes, lessons, and advice he'd share. He was a Marine who saw (too much) frontline conflict in Korea, then he became a police officer then detective. He saw a lot in his life out on the pointy end and he often shared his opinions as to how conflict could be avoided in the first place. He was an absolute trove of living history, that's a huge loss to me. Seven years later I still miss him, I'd trade all he left me for another couple of conversations but that's not how life works. My sibs are still somewhat envious that I got to drive him (in his urn) home from Orlando, FL to Chicago, IL in his Cadillac, transporting his cremated remains as well as heirlooms from him and our granny. I curated the roadtrip to him as we traveled, which strangely helped me work through his passing. Please take the time you need, Uncle Drach. I'm certain we'll all be patient.

31:35 a book about surveying the wrecks of Jutland discussed two “photographs” taken at the exact moment of HMS Invincible’s sinking. They showed slight differences, the first photo just shows the fireball, the second is oh so subtlety different, showing the superstructure starting to be lifted off by the detonation. It surmised that the two frames were in fact likely from now lost footage, and that the sinking of invincible was thereby filmed. Interesting stuff.

Captain Eric (Winkle) Brown landed a mosquito on 25th March 1944 on a carrier. This was the heaviest 'plane landed on a British carrier at that time. It had been adapted by giving it more powerful engines and 4-bladed propellers. As they were not intended for general usage, he was testing the practicality, the pitch was fixed. The only adaptation to the fuselage was an arrester hook from a Barracuda and two longerons.
@CharlesStearman2 жыл бұрын
@@myparceltape1169 Brown also landed a captured German Fieseler Storch on a carrier but that was a special case as it was a small and slow-flying STOL aircraft.

wrt the question about Hood. The USN had very detailed information. An Admiralty engineer named Goodall had been seconded to USN Bureau of Construction and Repair. where he both provided information on Hood, and advised on the redesign of the Lexingtons. The US SecNav and members of the General Board had gone on a European junket in the spring of 1919, which included a stop to look over Hood. As soon as they came back from the trip, they redesigned the Lexingtons based on their examination of Hood. Yes, everything the Americans were shown on Hood, and everything Goodall said could have been disinformation, but the information appears to be fairly accurate. Goodall's input on the Lexingtons included decent armor, which the USN declined in favor of more speed. I have read that, during the treaty negotiations, the British were open to an individual ship displacement limit of some 43,000 tons, the same as Hood. I give the Brits points for intellectual honesty on that point. The US declined, and insisted on the 35,000 ton limit.

There were a few U-Boat collisions during convoy battles in WWII. It is not conclusive, but inferred. Subs dropped of the grid without corresponding Allied kill claims. There was at least one instance, again inferred, that a U-Boat was killed when it's target exploded. The target was an ammunition ship. The resulting water hammer caught her submerged, either near or passing under.

There is a 25.5 inch Yamato armor with a 16 inch hole in it in a museum somewhere. There were two shots taken by an Iowa class battleship from 400 feet away. The first shot was of reduced power to simulate a reasonable battle range, and this shot was only a partial penetration that failed to punch through. Because the US navy was feeling a bit trigger happy and wanted to see a hole through that armor, the second shot was just a normal shot that punched through the armor. To this day, Yamato’s 25.5 inch armor and 22 inch armor is the only armor ever equipped on a battleship that is impenetrable to easy and every naval guns from reasonable battle ranges.

Condolences on your grandfather sir. I remember when I was studying about the USS Colorado that she was originally designed for 25 knots. The Navy stated that did not fit in the modern battle line. So they took the engines down in power in order to cut the cost down and bring it down to 21 knots. I read in her Battle Log on a couple of occasions she exceeded 22 knots. The whole form was there all they had to do was replace the engines.

Re: 00:30:22, the French 'Mers-El Kebir' footage shows at the very least 15 inch shells hitting the Bretagne, and one fairly major detonation which if wikipedia is to be believed is the ready ammunition for No. 3 turret exploding. Sadly all the copies of the footage available on KZbin were prepared for newsreels, I've no idea what happened to the original film those clips came from. Similarly there was a crewman on the IJN cruiser Tone who filmed the sinking of the USS Edsall, a single frame from that footage ended up in a Japanese propaganda magazine during WWII and the footage itself survived to at least the 1950s, again I have no idea what happened after that point.

13:00 - Also, taildraggers tend to sit with a considerable nose-up angle on the ground, which both makes it harder to see what's in front of you (which is a problem in the limited space and crowded environment of a carrier's flight deck) and results in the generation of considerable lift during your ground roll (which lifts some of the aircraft's weight off its wheels and reduces braking effectiveness), whereas trike-gears sit more-or-less level.
@seanmalloy72492 жыл бұрын
11:18 The other option for land-based aircraft landing on carriers is to go into the barrier that is raised to catch aircraft that fail to snag a wire with their arresting hook. Like braking once the wheels hit the deck, this is pretty much guaranteed to leave the plane in a non-flyable condition due to propellor and/or engine damage, to a somewhat lesser extent than nosing over from braking, but the result will be largely similar, so your point stands.

Re land based aircraft landing in carriers, there’s the C-130 trials on the Forrestal in the early 1960s. The design work on the Herc started in early 1951, so with rounding errors this is almost within the channel’s timeframe :)
@myparceltape11692 жыл бұрын
Captain Eric (Winkle) Brown got a telephone call in January 1944 and before the end of March he was able to land his mosquito on a carrier. Adaptations were: arrester hook from a Barracuda, two extra longerons, more powerful engines (possibly for the mission planned?) and 4-bladed propellers. He regretted that they were fixed pitch. (I would have wanted reverse thrust!) This was about a few thousand pounds heavier than the Avenger which was the heaviest plane to land on a British carrier so far. This was before adaptations. It also had a landing speed 30+ knots higher than the ship's gear could cope with. In the end however, the operation was not necessary.
