I have two of these and use one on a radio full time, and one as a portable lab instrument. Very useful.

This is a great little device. I bought mine as a kit and assembled it, apart from the main microprocessor flat pack, and it worked first time from initial switch on. Thank god for KZbin as there were no assembly instructions for the acrylic case.

Yeah. I figured it out the hard way how to assemble the acrylic case. Took me at least an hour until I had found out by trial and error the right sequence of the parts.

I think the kit is better, because it's fun to assemble and solder everything. only the small pitched ic's came presoldered on mine.

I bought this as a kit (SMD pre-soldered) to gain more soldering experiencing and I am glad that I did, but this is definitely not a beginners' kit and if you are a beginner and are worried about the risk, definitely just buy the fully assembled version. I presume such a beginner would be like me, wanting to use it to measure audio range frequencies for synthesizers, DIY oscillators, etc. So far it has been invaluable for me, but I really should put it into an enclosure (which was not included in my kit).

I fully agree. The acrylic case is sold separately by most Ebay-sellers probably because it´s not a mandatory accessory.

i got my dso like 2 years ago and i have to say for beginners, its really nice and is definitely worth the money and its really worth buying if you are learning as if you hook something up wrong and accidentally fry it, it can be easily replaced/fixed, this by no means is for a professional or serious workflow but its nice to have around, for serious work getting a surplus analog scope from ebay would be better as its way more usable, but as for me since our gove (india) has banned chinese stuff its really hard to get surplus stuff now and thus this is one of the only scopes a hobbyists can afford

Thanks, nice vid .... If you remove the film from the sliders they free up nicely ... I added more M3 nuts and locked with glue for better support ... Seems to work well ...

Hi Roger, (off-topic) did you try the degaussing trick with a cordless-drill with a M10 bolt in its chuck and a few pairs of NdFeB magnets? Did it work?

No. Nice idea. Will try it, when I find the time.

I wonder why JYE always complain about illegal copies when it's Open Source. The Gabotroinics OSCs have more features than either of those, ie built in signal generator, etc.
@KainkaLabs

The complaints are probably because of outdated firmware and a resistor with a wrong value that increases noise. Didn´t know about the gabotronics DSO beforehand (there are so many types out there). It has better specs/more functions, but does not meet my specs concerning useability and cost for portable use: - higher price - no probe delivered - switchable input attenuator? - AC/DC-coupling switch So for *my* purposes the DSO138 is really the best bang for buck.

When you buy preassembled, you may get wrongly assembled kit, such as wrong value of R11 or not matching software version, leading to errors and noise. I bought and assembled DSO138, it was the first kit i ever built, and it was pretty much a breeze, took about 30 minutes for the soldering, but then again i'm not new to electronics in general. There's a trap (design mishap perhaps) that the kit contains resistor values that misread as other values from the kit if you hold the resistor wrong, and preassembled units can fall into this trap too, so the manual really isn't kidding when they say that you want to measure resistors before installing them. You may want to check whether you got a counterfeit on the official page of JYE Tech. Assembled are likely to be counterfeits because the original manufacturer doesn't offer them in assembled form. I bought from Amazon labeled as original and got a super obvious fake, but didn't have time to return it. I tried to report it to Amazon, but got no reply. Well, it works at least. Keep an eye out on the new DSO150 kit. I haven't tried it, but from the looks of it, there is a lot less to assemble, a better, this time official molded enclosure rather than brittle and unwieldy acrylic cuts out of some cottage business, and basically the same digital half with a better analog front-end. Furthermore, it's likely it might not have been cloned yet. It comes out at about same price. Theoretically, the digital half should be able to do 2MS/s by alternating DAC channels. I don't have absolute confidence in the software team at JYE as far as tickling the microcontroller to perform to its fullest, but it also might make no sense with the front end they have at their disposal or cause issues elsewhere, so they might have chosen well, hard to judge.

The firmware is upgradeable and freely available from the Jyetech.com website. The latest firmware and the changed R11-value for lower noise are form 01/2015. So I don´t think there are still "old" versions around. The price difference is so low between the assembled version and the kit that I don´t think it´s worth the effort to buy the kit (especially for electronics beginners)

KainkaLabs I received a kit that had old firmware like I think 030 version and old manual, and old configuration is very noisy indeed! I bought it mere months ago. Upgrading the firmware was anything but smooth, there was obviously a clock disparity between the board and my adapter, and I had to keep stepping the baud rate down until I unbricked it, and I'm not too sure yet whether my adapter or the board is adrift, and if it's the latter, whether the crystal has a trimming error or there's something wrong with capacitors. And I'd much rather troubleshoot assembly mistakes that I personally made than someone else.

What did I say instead? It´s not only sold on Ebay but everywhere and also from many online-sellers in Europe (like e.g. Elektor-magazine or from our store)
