performance: Bohdan Kozlovsky • Дума про Остафія Дашке...
historical background: The Duma about Ostafiy Dashkiewicz (Polish: Duma o Ostafim Daszkiewiczu) tells the story of the Cossack Ostafiy Dashkiewicz's stay in Turkish captivity. The Duma is also translated into Polish. Starting from Ostafiy Dashkevych, who first gathered the scattered people who lived beyond the Dnipro rapids and formed the Zaporozhian army from them, and up to the time of the destruction or attack of the Sich by Tekelim; the whole Cossack era, which lasted more than three hundred years, is reflected in historical dumas, every important event, every famous person is not forgotten, all this lives on in the duma.
This duma is about the hero and founder of the Cossacks, Ostafii Dashkevych. In Zaporizhzhia, he was called a bohatyr, which meant demigod according to ancient authors. Many times he was in battles with Tatars or Russians, was himself captured by the Tatars, miraculously escaped from captivity, and continued to crush the Tatars mercilessly. This duma tells about the time when Ostafii Dashkevich was in captivity, and the duma sings how he escaped from there and again smashed the infidels." (Michał Gliszczynski, 1852)
