"The first time I ever really listened to Kyle Kulinski’s show was in the back of a cab last summer. The driver had his phone hooked up through the stereo and was pumping out an episode through the car speakers - loudly, as if looking to convert a captive audience.
“Do you like Kyle Kulinski?”
The driver, Ahmed, was a recent immigrant and apparently a die-hard fan of Secular Talk, the political talk show that Kulinski broadcasts on KZbin. I told him, yes, in fact. I do like Kulinski, had come across his show several years ago, and, all things considered, he seemed pretty good.
“He understands what we’re up against,” Ahmed said. “Like Bernie.”
But I was surprised to hear Kulinski’s name mentioned in the same breath as Bernie Sanders, particularly with such adoration. Because what I did remember about Kulinski’s show struck me as mostly capital-P “progressive” takes on the news - the left wing of the Netroots crowd more than the democratic socialism Sanders has popularized.
It’s an impression that wasn’t entirely incorrect.
“I have no time for philosophical, airy bullshit,” Kulinski tells me from his home in Westchester, New York. “I don’t want to hear about Lenin. I don’t want to hear about Marx. I just want a super plainspoken, straightforward agenda with a straightforward way of selling it.”
With over 800,000 subscribers and nearly 670 million total views on KZbin, selling a progressive agenda is clearly something Kulinski knows how to do - even Democracy Now, the long-standing flagship of progressive media, cannot match his reach on the platform. Chapo Trap House can certainly boast a wildly devoted fan base (and a not insignificant degree of media influence), but their audience is roughly half the size of Kulinski’s.
While Secular Talk might be more likely to be looped in with the progressive networks around Air America and Pacifica alums like Sam Seder than the more resolutely socialist world, Kulinski’s fiery rhetoric, razor-sharp class instincts, and knack for withering takedowns sets him apart from his peers. Judging by his rhetoric alone, he’s closer to a Eugene Debs than a Chris Hayes.
But unlike Hayes, Amy Goodman, or his friend Cenk Uygur of The Young Turks - who began airing Secular Talk on his web network seven years ago - the thirty-two-year-old Kulinski is virtually invisible in the mainstream media. Despite his enormous fan base, his show has never once been mentioned in the obligatory trend pieces on “the Millennial Left” pumped out by the prestige media. Nor has Kulinski’s name ever popped up at all in the New York Times, Vox, the New Yorker, New York Magazine, or the Washington Post, despite his leading role in cofounding Justice Democrats, the organization widely credited with sweeping Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and the rest of “the Squad” to power.
Just last week, his Wikipedia page was deleted. The reason? “There is very simply no [reliable source] coverage of this person,” according to one moderator. In new media, he’s king - the Sean Hannity of the Berniecrat left. In old media, he’s nobody.
I suspect there are a few reasons for that. There is nothing “cool” about Kulinski’s show. (As a friend put it, “‘Welcome to Secular Talk’ sounds like something you’d hear on Egyptian radio.”) His no-nonsense social-democratic politics won’t get him much cred with the Full Communism crowd. He records his show not in Brooklyn or Los Angeles, but in a studio he built himself in his modest Westchester home. His hair is too groomed and his taste in clothes too preppy to qualify as “Dirtbag Left.” Nor has he ever attended an n+1 release party. “Not only have I not attended one,” he says, “I have no idea what that means.”
And yet he’s astonishingly plugged-in for a young man in the suburbs. Wondering how Sanders ended up on the Joe Rogan Experience? Kulinski, a frequent guest on Rogan’s wildly popular show, introduced them. “You make the most sense to me,” Rogan told Kulinski on a recent episode. “You’re a normal person.”
Much like Sanders himself, Kulinski’s show has a massive audience that just doesn’t compute with our media’s understanding of “what the kids want” or even “what the left-wing kids want.”
It’s probably for the best - the very woke and very WASP-ish decorum haunting much of the media world is nowhere to be found in Secular Talk. “Corporate Democrats over-focus on identity as a trick to divert you from the issues that unite us all - class issues,” he said on a recent episode.

It's even dumber, because gas stoves are not better than electric for home use anyway. I've used both, gas stoves make the kitchen hotter and don't cook food any better. As an added bonus, the gas line can leak and cause major problems. But you can use the gas stove's flame to light alcohol vapor on fire for your TikTok video so I guess there's that.

@@anthonytwohill9726 the entire time he was president my arguments didn't work, and she didn't vote in 2020. Full disclosure, I threw my vote away on Jo Jorgensen (cringe). I didn't like the Biden vs Trump choice just as much as she didn't like it, but she was afraid of covid and therefore did not go to the polling places, I did. My efforts finally paid off shortly after January 6th, and I hammered home the point that he was a wannabe dictator, a tyrant, and an enemy to the Constitution of the United States of America. Now, she hopes that he ends up in prison, and never sees a government position ever again in his life. She has friends who are the same way that she was, and they still remain unshaken. My best advice, because it's something that I did that worked with a friend of mine is you find an issue that they care about and show that he failed miserably. I pointed out the ban on bump stocks under Trump and that it was not the ATF that even suggested a band, it came directly from Trump, and I pointed out other areas where Trump was bad on the Second Amendment. It can be a grueling process trying to change a person's mind, especially if they have to come out and admit that they have been a sucker or a mark the entire time. It's not a guarantee, but it can be effective.

The gas stove study was just measuring the harm. We've KNOWN gas stoves are bad for health for decades, if not over a century. "they've removed the lines, because they wanna take away your gas stoves". I bet when Charlie Hurt came home with a bloody nose and his mom asked "why did he punch you?", Charlie answered "Because he wanted to hurt me with his fist". The real answer, of course, is: it's about saving money. As a harm becomes quantifiable, it becomes monetized, and landlords, insurance companies, and local governments (lawyers, basically) all work together to figure out how to reduce their liabilities from that harm. But when you own your own mansion on a big property like Kamala, you get understandably get more options

My father broke my jaw when I was trying to leave his house after an argument where he quoted a made up story from Fox News about how people are killing children after they are born..... He broke my jaw over BS that he could not confirm nor any doctor would agree to perform.... And all of this started over an abortion argument where my sister felt as if her rights were being taken away.... I tried to explain that to him.... If they wanted to be hyperbolic and also been taken seriously they could have possibly walked that line but they just phoned it in and used the old talking point classics. I am largely on the fence but I wrestle with if these paid sellouts actually believe what they are saying but in this instance it seems like they wouldn’t be able to function enough to be able to portray themselves as a human television personality at all and be this dumb. Sad story I want to add, but its true. My Mother-in-Law was once a center-right type, a registered certified nurse and fairly intelligent. Then she retired and for the last 10 or so years, any time you went to her house Faux News was/is on. Now? Shes lives in total fear of everything. Its like talking to someone from a Doomsday cult- you name it and its 'about to happen'; money being worthless, collapse of civilization, our doors being nailed shut (which would accomplish...?). Once she told me I need to start excavating a 2nd exit from my basement for when I need to use it as a bomb shelter for the coming nuclear war. Like any good Doomsday cultist, whenever the date of collapse passes, she just moves the goal posts another 6 months into the future. It doesnt stop there either- shes become a food hoarder. Her house is jammed with can goods and dry goods. The basement is a nightmare of rodent droppings and water bugs. Her furnace has failed...she wont fix it, yet her house is jammed with food that will largely end up in a dumpster. I know this is from watching the fear-mongering Faux News, day after day. My wife doesnt even wish to speak to her on the phone because after the greeting, its all doom n' gloom for the next hour. Its tragic, honestly.

Eliminating gas lines from new construction almost certainly has to do with the fact that it saves money; the building already requires electrical service so why pay for an entirely separate utility service when you can run the appliances on electricity? (Surprise profit motive strikes again)

This argument is so dumb, when you buy a house you get whatever stove the kitchen is set up for. In Illinois most houses have been built for gas appliances. To buy an electric appliance requires for an extra 220 to be run. We want to get an induction range but it’s not like we can just go to the store and get it ….our house needs the extra line first and we need to tap off the gas line.
