"Sure, my missed kick was the difference, but my teammates were really why we lost this game"- an actual quote said by an NFL player
During week.8 of the 1981 NFL season, the Miami Dolphins played the Dallas Cowboys and lost 28-27. The reason they scored 27 instead of 28? A missed extra point by kicker Uwe von Schamann. And after the game, von Schamann had some, shall we say, bizarre comments about what went down

Interesting fact: Uwe von Schamann was originally born in what was then West Berlin in Germany in 1956 before his family moved to Fort Worth, Texas. After graduating from Fort Worth's Eastern Hills high school, he went to the University of Oklahoma where, during a game against Ohio State in 1977, he led the opposing Ohio State fans in a block that kick chant--and then proceeded to make the field goal and beat Ohio State... In the NFC title game in 1981, funnily enough, the Cowboys would be on the receiving end of a 28-27 loss, to the San Francisco 49ers (although it was due to the Cowboys having two field goals and three TDs, not missing a PAT) thanks to the famous play known as The Catch...

At lease Uwe still had a job. Missing an extra point kick is no joke at times. Case in point: Toni Linhart (who was substituting for an injured Pat Leahy) in one for the Jets against the Bills missed two extra point kicks. The Jets lost 14-12. The next week, he missed a field goal and extra point kick; then lost his job.
@Bruce12867
@Bruce12867 9 ай бұрын
Prior to his odyssey with the Jets, Linhart, as a Colt, missed three field goals against the Browns. Colts owner Robert Irsay sarcastically gave him a $10,000 raise, while Head coach Ted Marchibroda cut him the next day. I believe JG9 made a video about that bizarre story.

I am a big Dol-Fan and of the great coach Don Shula but he made some blunders like keeping inept DC Tom Olivadotti way too long and cutting Garo for this clown even though the reasoning at the time is that he had longer kickoffs than Garo and he did end the MNF game in which Howard Cosell announced that John Lennon had been killed with a OT FG that won the game that made me feel good for two seconds and his 48 yard game winner that beat the Jets 20-19 that gave the Dolphins the AFC East title in 1982 plus the misses in the Epic in Miami kept the Dolphins from becoming frozen fish sticks the following week in the -59 degree wind chill at the Bengals for the AFC Championship game.

Ten weeks later, he kicked a divot in overtime against the Chargers with a chance to complete the comeback for the Epic in Miami. Can't single him out directly as the Phins' offense had too many giveaways that night. Andra Franklin's fumble was brutal.

“There’s no way that I can look at that and say that if I would have hit that, we would have won the game.” Larry Dorman agrees, criticizing Shula for not running the ball while noting Uwe’s misses six misses from 42+ yards out. Uwe’s quote appears to continue “I had expected us to keep the ball on the ground and not take a chance with an interception. I wasn’t really praying for a chance at a field goal. I certainly was hoping that it wouldn’t come down to that one point. I can’t say that I lost the game because I missed the extra point. It was a team effort and you have to look at it that way. You can’t blame it on one person.” Two thoughts: The context seems to add a lot that you left out; if nothing else it doesn't strike me as dumb. Secondly, where was the backlash that kept us talking about it almost 40 year later? Even the article you cite seems to accept von Schamann's explanation despite admittedly weak team-speak.

If you're responding to a question with, "It's not my fault we lost", it had better be the case that everyone else in the room is confused, either by the answer, because the team won, or by the question, because you really didn't have an impact on the game, like you're the second string waterboy or something.

New subscriber. I watched your video on 2002 Dolphins and loved the video. If you haven’t done these videos, can you do a video on how bad the 2003 Vikings choked from making the playoffs, because they lost all 4 games to the top 4 teams in the next season NFL Draft, including a last-second TD to my Cardinals (that’s how I became a Cards fan, unfortunately)? Also a video on both the 2002 and 2003 Saints I exclusively missing the playoffs?

While von Schamann's missed PAT wasn't the only reason why the Fins lost, he played a role in their loss in Irving, Texas that day and he should've owned it and kept it moving.
