Prior to a 1987 NFL game between the Houston Oilers and the Cleveland Browns, the Oilers were so upset at the announcers assigned for the game (Reggie Rucker and Jim Donovan) that they publicly complained to NBC and requested that the network change its announcer pairing. A complaint like this was unprecedented. Let's just say NBC did not take too kindly to the request, and the aftermath of the game was not pretty. This is the story behind the crazy controversy involving the NFL on NBC

One commentator I will forever have a special place in my heart for is Dick Enberg. His voice always put a smile on his face, he seemed like such a genuinely nice & sweet guy, and I would watch SD Padre games during the end of his run just to hear him. I think the biggest issue here is that, on paper, this looked like a game for the great Dick Enberg to call. He was pretty much the lead play by play guy for NBC in the 80's and 90's, and this seemed to be the game of the week. Also, anyone else miss those old Oilers uniforms?!

Maybe in hindsight yes, but while the Browns were coming off an AFC Championship Game appearance as mentioned earlier in the video, the Oilers were absolutely trash after the Luv Ya Blue era ended with Bum Phillips being axed in 1980. That said, why NBC didn't schedule one of their other play-by-play guys (Don Criqui, Marv Albert, Charlie Jones, heck they could have used Jay Randolph if they wanted a lower-level guy that could prevent allegations of bias against Houston - or if nothing else team Reggie Rucker with native Texan Charlie Jones if NBC absolutely had to send Rucker to Houston that week) is anyone's guess

2017, there was an issue when Greg Olsen, who wasn't completely done playing yet, was doing some announcing while recovering from an injury. As it turns out, this would become a problem when he was put in the booth for a game between the Rams and Vikings. Vikings were upset about this because they were scheduled to play the Panthers a few weeks later. Rams echoed their concerns because the Panthers were in the playoff hunt, and that meant a potential Wild Card match up with the Rams and Panthers. Fox still didn't pull Olsen from the booth.

Very hit or miss with Rucker. He was certainly observant on the pick play, and right to call it out, but listening to him talk, and having heard him on other games, he always sounded in over his head. I remember reading about that in the paper at the time, especially the "we don't tell you who to start at quarterback" quote. If I remember right, announcer assignments are usually done about 2-3 weeks in advance in the middle of the sesson, and in some cases more than that. That weekend NBC had the DH and in Denver we got 2 NBC games since the Broncos were playing in the LA Coliseum. We didn't get CLE-HOU. We got IND-NE which had Criqui and Trumpy. Also for many years Johnny Morris, who played for the Bears and for years hosted a local coach's show in Chicago, worked almost exclusively Bears games for CBS, often with Tim Ryan but also with other play-by-play announcers sometimes, such as Frank Glieber or Gary Bender. I read somewhere that anytime he was assigned to a non-Bears game he wasn't too pleased. Yet unless I missed it I never heard Bears opponents complain about who CBS assigned to those games.

CBS was still in the verrrrry end stages of having team-specific announcers. The literal practice of having team-specific announcers (two sets for each broadcast depending on which market was airing which games) was long, long gone, but there were some guys who tended to stick with certain teams. Summerall and Madden called a LOT of Giants games in the '80s, even before they turned around and became regular Super Bowl contenders. In 1984 they called 8 or 9 Giants games and exactly 0 games involving the 15-1 49ers...despite the fact that Madden lived in the Bay Area and didn't even have the Madden Cruiser yet (doing his traveling by train).

It does seem ridiculous to think of a couple of Cleveland guys broadcasting a national game involving Cleveland. But then again, I can't tell you how many times Marv Albert broadcasted an NBA on NBC game involving the New York Knicks and he was a broadcaster for them. Or Vin Scully calling the 1988 World Series between the A's and the Dodgers on NBC and he spent that season like so many calling Dodgers' games. Shucks, I've had to broadcast games myself as neutral when the team I usually call was involved in the game.

For one thing, I have never heard that bias, but also a professional announcer needs to put away his allegiances and be impartial, which I think he's always done. Yes. Johnny Morris did mostly Bears games for CBS, though he would do some non-Bears games as well. This included the 1977 regular season finale at Giants Stadium that he did with Vin Scully when the Bears beat the Giants to make the playoffs for to that point the first time since the Bears won it all over those same Giants after the 1963 season (back when prior to 1967 the ONLY playoff game (unless a division tie-breaker was needed) in the NFL most years was the Championship Game).

So is this why we can't get the Kevin Harlan/Trent Green team for a Chiefs game... (Harlan was a legendary PBP for the Chiefs radio broadcast before Mitch Holthus, and Trent Green is self explanatory)? I know the Current Chiefs will draw the network's #1 broadcast team most weeks, but Chiefs fans would love to have Harlan/Green call the game (turning the TV down and listening to the radio doesn't work anymore as there is almost a 5 sec delay anymore).

To be fair, NBC treated WKYC as their “AA” affiliate in the 1970s and 1980’s as they stashed their not-ready-for-WNBC (“AAA”) or network talent in Cleveland. It may seem unfortunate they decided to use Donovan for a Cleveland game but I also believe that using Donovan for a Cleveland game was the ultimate test of his objectivity. The network needed this kind of situation as part of their overall evaluation of Donovan.

The only reason that he even so much as got regional assignments for NBC is simple: At that point, NBC owned and operated WKYC, but it was the lowest-rated owned and operated NBC station. Apparently, according to another comment looking up newspaper articles about this, Enberg had a horse race at Santa Anita or somewhere close by the previous day, hence the L.A. assignment. Chargers-Seahawks was probably the biggest game of the week--the Chargers were 8-1 (two games up on everyone else in the conference) and the Seahawks 6-3, though it seems less big in hindsight with the Chargers dropping their last 6 games to plummet out of the playoffs. They got Jones & Cefalo...uh-oh, Charlie Jones lived in Seattle. Controversy time! Marv/Joe and Criqui/Trumpy got the two AFC East games--the East was bunched together with the Colts and Jets at 5-4 and everyone else at 4-5. You definitely could argue that maybe one of those teams should have been in Houston, but doubtless the Jets game went to a majority of the country in the 1pm slot.

Understandable the Browns would get A Team because their record, previous season, & pre-season Super Bowl odds while the Oilers were not expected to do anything until their surprising start as well as the strike throwing a big curveball (a 3-way tie for 2nd place in the NFC East ended up destroying DAL in 1988, NYG failed to make the playoffs to defend their crown much like SF in 1982, NO made their 1st playoff appearance ever, MN despite 8-7 record upset SF in divisional round & came within 1 play of their first SB appearance in 11 years, DEN-CLE AFC Champ II, WSH wins SB in CA much like 1982 season) Looking at the NFL 1987 Week 11 slate (Pro Football Ref)and trying to figure out who got what teams SNF: MIA (4-5) at DAL (5-4), ESPN (would’ve been on NBC & have maybe Enberg-Olsen because Marino and Cowboys, don’t know who the team was then) MNF: LA (2-7) at WSH (7-2), ABC (Al-Dan-Frank who would call SB XXII) Who had the DH & the broadcast teams for each game that week? Top candidates for each network’s lead games w/records before the games NBC IND (5-4) at NE (4-5): AFC East BUF (4-5) at NYJ (5-4): Kelly vs O’Brien, Albert-Namath CLE (6-3) at HOU (6-3): AFC Central, the subject of the video, both teams made the playoffs, both teams lost at DEN (HOU got their asses kicked, CLE “The Fumble”) DEN (6-3-1) at LAR (3-6): Elway & the Raiders SD (8-1) at SEA (7-2), I could see NBC lead team being here especially if NBC had the DH. Start of the Chargers spiraling out to 8-7 & the end of Dan Fouts career. Look at who was one of the starting QBs for SD in 1988 (Babe Laufenberg!!!!) CBS… not a lot of strong contenders for Madden-Summerall STL (3-6) at PHI (4-5): only thing going is NFC East… but a very weak matchup SF (7-2) at TB (4-5): 49ers star power alone (1PM ET) NYG (3-6) at NO (6-3): Defending champs trying to make up for the 3 Ls during strike games against surprise Saints team (4PM ET, likely because NYJ was in early window & NO was NFC West)

Actually, I believe it was Dick Enberg, then Don Criqui (who also at that time was actually doing sports on "Imus In The Morning" on WNBC before that became WFAN when that moved from 1050 to 660 on AM in October 1988), then Marv (a legend on WNBC-TV, Channel 4 in New York back then and for years after even when he was doing the NBA for NBC) and then Charlie Jones.

I remember fans asking that Phil Simms not broadcast any of the Denver Broncos games. Later on, CBS made Simms part of their morning show. PS Simms was terrible regardless of the teams involved. My opinion and yes I am a Broncos fan. I was not part of the petition that the fans put on the internet.

WKYC was then owned by NBC, so that jay have played a factor in Jim Donovan being assigned to some NBC football telecasts. IMHO, Dick Enberg and Merlin Olsen should have been assigned that game.

Jim Donovan is a good guy. Im waiting to see a documentary about in 1990 when Pat Summerall took leave due to him vomiting blood after calling a December game and Dick Stockton had to explain to the nation why he was filling in for him unannounced the next week. Or when Verne Lundquist (his usual fill-in when Pat does golf or tennis) filled in for him on the NFC Wild Card game a little later that season.

I'm always amazed at how much attention announcers garner from fans in general. Some aren't "homers"- which is absolutely what they are not supposed to be. Play by play tells you what you're seeing, and color commentators add NOTHING, other than cliche takes and the obvious (the team that blocks and tackles... yeah, got it). It's such wasted energy to be concerned at all .

How the hell did Rucker still have a job at that point, let alone get to work a game as high-profile as this one was? Donovan needed a better analyst than Rucker was at that point. As for the Oilers, they should've spent more time getting their team ready for the Browns than they spent bitching about NBC's announcer placements.
