Washington used a 5 man defensive line. Just for this game. Green Bay coach Dan Devine took the play calling duties from Q.B. coach Bart Starr before the game. Devine called the plays. It was an awful game for a 9 year old kid to witness in his first year being a Packer/football fan. John Brockington and MacArther Lane were a great tandem. You've heard of thunder and lightning backfield duos, these were thunder and more thunder.

Wow, you are sure on the same wavelength on this as me! I was a 9 year old Packers fan for that game, too. My memories start with the 1968 season…so until I got to college, this was the only Packers playoff game I remembered first hand. And you are exactly right about Dan Devine’s ridiculous stubbornness-despite Bart Starr pleading him to change his game plan when Washington’s 5 man line shut the run game down, Devine was too prideful to change-and how amazing Brockington and Lane were in the running game that season. They finally had a good draft in ‘72 and got huge immediate help from Willie Buchanon and Chester Marcol, too. A word or two in Scott Hunter’s defense: 1. He was far better than the alternative, Jerry Tagge, who was spectacularly bad as a Packer. 2. Hunter had very little to work with in the way of receivers. His best WR was an aging Carrol Dale. Most of the Packers’ passes were to Brockington or Lane. 3. Brockington has been very clear that he thinks Hunter was a much better quarterback than he got credit for, and he would know. Funny thing is, this is the first time I had ever heard about the cigar incident!

I'd just turned 9 three weeks earlier. I remember coming home from church the game was underway maybe start of second quarter and G.B. couldn't do anything. They were just completely shut down. I think they might have got their points off a turnover short field. They had no chance. Yea, they didn't have receivers. Hard to believe a team going 10-4 with a starting QB throwing 6 touchdowns and 9 interceptions for the season.

@@rickshafer6688 It is. But in those days before the rules were changed to favor more passing, that kind of ratio wasn’t as unheard of as it is now. And Hunter split time with Tagge, and it was only a 14 game season. Still, that’s pretty bad in any era.

The only thing I knew about this team before was from my dad (who was a freshman in HS) who remembered RB John Brockington having a very good season. It probably helped he probably had a good season getting a lot of carries from the passing game being awful

Speaking of which, Red Auerbach kept John Havlicek, instead, of Paul Silas, because, he had seniority, the, former, played, two, forgettable seasons, before, retiring, while, the, latter, went, to, the, Finals, twice, winning, the, second, if the Celtics hadn't lucked into Larry Bird, his, gaffe, would have been, historically, ruinous.

That's all well and good but the real reason the Packers lost is because Dan Devine was a terrible coach that didn't have the respect of his players and not only didn't adjust his offense to combat Washington's 5-1 defense that they faced earlier in the season that you can't run against, but also took away the play calling from Bart Starr that game.
