If you're down by 1 point and facing 4th down, and you've only got 14 seconds left in the ballgame, what do you do? Obviously, you go for it. However, not the Lions. Not the freaking Detroit Lions. Because in week 12 of the 1977 NFL season against the Green Bay Packers, Lions head coach Tommy Hudspeth attempted, quite possibly, the dumbest final play you'll ever see in your life considering the circumstances

Before we get to this act of complete cowardice, why was Landry not attempting short/medium range passes to the sidelines to get yards and stop the clock? And after watching the final seconds of the game, I think the players realized that if they lose the game and take themselves out of the playoff picture, they can get rid of this bumbling buffoon of a coach and start new, and it kinda worked.

You said the Lions were 2 games back for the final wild card spot. In 1977 there was only 1 wild card per conference. The 2nd wild card wasn't added until the next season when they expanded the season to 16 games. Incidentally the NFC wild card ended up going to the Bears because my Cards were in the midst of a monumental crash which saw them lose the final 4 games of 1977 then the first 8 of 1979.

Yep by final wild card spot it was the last spot (poor choice of words on my part). Cards were 2 games on the Lions for the wild card

This is exactly like what happened in 1994 in a CFL game between the Vegas Posse & Edmonton with one minor difference. With 30 seconds left in the game & Vegas down by 1 facing 3rd down (basically the CFL's version of 4th down as there are only 3 downs in that league) with no timeouts left, Vegas decides to punt the ball back to Edmonton. Vegas coach Ron Meyer's logic behind doing this was that his special teams would force a fumble during the return. That did not happen at all as Edmonton took advantage of the poor punt return coverage and ran it back 75 yards for a TD, ending any hope of Vegas coming back. Out of all the cities that the CFL expanded to in the US during the 90's, Vegas was by far the most disastrous because in addition to this incident, during a game vs BC, one of their kick returners tried to signal for a fair catch which does not exist in the CFL & he basically let the ball roll into the end zone which BC then recovered for a TD thanks to again poor special teams. Then there's the off field incidents which include a national anthem singer completing butchering the lyrics to the Canadian national anthem & hiring (no joke) "Showgirls" (the same ones you see along the Strip asking for pictures) as cheerleaders to try to increase attendance. It came as no surprise that the Posse folded at the end of the season due to very poor attendance (heck one of their home games attracted the lowest crowd in CFL history) & massive financial losses.

Edmonton's team once lost a, Grey Cup, to Doug Flutie's Argonauts 43-37 thanks to a horrible call, that would absolutely have been overturned by the planned review system installed the following year, the reaction of the losing coach was priceless, though, to be fair, neither, team truly deserved to win.

According to my math, it only gets a 5.36: Well inside their own 40 = 1 4th and really long = 0.2 Down by 1 = 4 1,786 seconds past halftime -> 1.786 ^ 3 + 1 = 6.70 1 x 0.2 x 4 x 6.70 = 5.36 But still, no denying how cowardly this was.
