Someone did this to me in a duel and since i had no cards on my field, i tried to use lightning storm. The problem was it refused to activate even though i had no cards on the field. It also refused to activate in the next duel and since then i stopped using it.

I had this happen to me, I had normal summon a jellyfish that can search your deck and throw away a field spell to special summon a water monster in your hand and when I did nothing popped up and I was going first too and they didn't activate any cards beforehand either
