Fantastic effort - well done! I live next to the railway at Auchterhouse and regularly fly over the area. The line is still visible from the air in many places.

Loved watching this. Was just talking about it with my friend a couple of weeks ago as he lived in Downfield and my dad drank in Doc Stuart's. Used to play up Bridgefoot way when a girl as my dad worked in Strathmartine Hospital. Fond memories of jumping in the waterfall at the old Mill. Thanks for sharing this 😀

Great documentary, spent a lot of time walking parts of that line, using a bit of imagination, looking forward to part 2, when all the extensions have been added. Keep up the good work.

Great video, Ron. The Aerial views are lovely. These drones are fantastic things. I wish I had one when I started my walks over the line and building up my web site dedicated to the old railway. I have now completed all my walks with the exception of Pitnappie Cutting which I look forward to doing once the upgrading work has been completed. Of course, you can't walk the track bed where the Gun Club has taken over, so I probably won't ever do that length. I'm afraid you showed the Fallows quarry branch and not the Balbeuchley Incline. Balbeuchley Junction was/is a short distance ahead of the Fallows spur. The only tell-tale sign left is one of the Iron fence posts still standing, if a bit leaning. That was probably the gate across the branch when it was closed for the night or whenever. Balbeuchley quarry was to the immediate left (West) of the Fallows quarry. It was the Fallows spur that crossed the bridge over the Dighty. Hope you can get around to the second part but I am sure these videos take a lot of time and effort to complete. I have been making 'normal' videos over the old Cromford & High Peak Track Bed, over two separate visits during the last couple of weeks and it took me a lot longer than when simply taking snap-shots. The C&HPR was built at the same time as the D&N but was 34 miles long, with nine gradiants spread over that distance.

There were two quarries fed by the railway at Rosemill, the one that led to Balbeuchly is no longer visible (Leoch Quarry, from which the stone for City Square, the Mills Observatory and the Law monument was taken.) but the line you show is the one into Fairlie Quarry a few hundred meters closer to Dundee.

Isn't the Law monument Granite?
@davidmam
@davidmam 4 жыл бұрын
@@roos5167 No. The monument on the law is made of sandstone from the now defunct Leoch Quarry, the same stone as the Mills Observatory and City Square.

Is this the same railway line that ran from lochee station ? or is that a different one that ran through back of beechwood and kingsway and back of stratmatine ?

The quarry you show is Burnside Quarry, not Pitnappie. Pitnappie is just opposite the Couston Road at the top of the brae.

Pitnappie quarry is not what you show. It was at the top of the hill, on the other side of the road. It went out of use in about 1900 and the bridge access to it is now filled in.

Are you sure? My grandfather worked at Pitnappie quarry during the war and my father (who made this film) used to go visit him there on Sundays. He stands by this being the true location.
@davidmam
@davidmam 9 жыл бұрын
wattage2007 There are two quarries on Pitnappie - the one you show is burnside quarry. Pitnappie Quarry is at the top of the hill on the west side of the road. It used the halt owned by Scotston Farm at the end of the Bonnyton Road. Check the old maps. It is understandable that the larger quarry became known as Pitnappie Quarry colloquially but that is not it's proper name. Take a look at maps.nls.uk/view/82884444 - look at the 25 inch 1890-1910 maps.
@davidmam
@davidmam 9 жыл бұрын
David Martin A better link maps.nls.uk/geo/find/#zoom=15&lat=56.54187&lon=-3.11584&layers=8 then choose 25 inch 1890-1920 OS maps. Then click on the relevant boxes. Otherwise a great video. Really nice. You should take a looka t what we are trying to do with the Pitnappie cutting to get it back in use as a cycle/walk/horse track.
