I bought this thinking it was a straight forward multi-fx unit, so I could finally axe all my digital effect vsts..... boy was I wrong. This thing has grit, grime and even analogue high fidelity when using a gentle touch/finesse.Things can get ugly quick but there's also a lot of happy little accident's with this box, making it good for sonic exploration, which is what I want from an electronic instrument..a universe in a box. As a musical tool this is somewhere between a sledge hammer and a jewellers saw.

I can explain the weird reverb sound! Analog reverbs use feedback to make the tail of the verb longer… but you actually want to filter the signal that goes back into the input of the effect, otherwise things become too messy. It seems both LFOs are routed to the self oscillating filter frequency of the fed back signal making the resulting noise move in that weird way. It makes total sense considering the approach of the designers. The reverb won’t make your loops sound exactly the same twice and the result will always be more organic than a digital one at the cost of a worse noise to signal ratio.
@bruitsofficial3 жыл бұрын
I was actually so proud of myself for nailing that possible explanation… I am such an analog nerd! XD

Very good review - helping me a lot in deciding 'buy' vs 'wait'... I've been following the progress of this unit since the announcement during a Superbooth (2019? 2020?). On their website it says "the dust collector is the first of series of FX..." so I am going to wait for the second/third/... when they make it (1) stereo and (2) a little bit less or controllable noisy. The LoFi side of this box gives it character but with paying 500euros/dollars should give the user the option to dial in or out that big noise. Thanks and enjoy the rest of the weekend!

These things aren't too common and are actually super super good. I got one instead of an Elektron Analog Heat and have no regrets. I find the actual reverb to be an acquired taste, but there is so much more to it than that. it's the filter is great, and it's really practical for warming up a signal (gotta love the drive and that "balls" knob) and adding nuance with the EG, LFO and so on, while being very fun to just tweak.

I pondered over this one since the Hainbach demo as well, but I already had gizmos that did everything, except for the spring reverb. There was just something that didn’t quite click for me in further demos so I ended up getting the Anasounds Element with the 3 different spring reverb lengths. An Andy Martin demo of it sold me solid on the thing.

This is a dream piece of kit if you are into noise as the musical output and not just using it as a series of FX pedals as a utility. I think of it as a foley generator, adding character and individuality to the background of your productions. A malleable tape saturation/manipulation effect. I like to make long soundscapes with it and a JMT synth, then implement that into another production.
@luckyllou73253 жыл бұрын
i saw the hainbach video back then. When the dust collector was in your video description today, my first thought was: "this is not the right device for ricky's music" ... I was sure that they sent you this for a "review" and I am very surprised that you bought it yourself .. .anyway, I hope it stays with you and we will hear and see it again with you sometimes. btw. very funny: "Yeah we can play with the springs" xD

"You hear this haunting? What is this?!" LMFAO. In all seriousness, great review. I've been wanting to pull the trigger on this for quite some time and haven't. After watching your review, glad I held off. There are tons of cool applications for this thing and it sounds incredible at times, but the non stereo and non normalled signal path was just a bit too much for me to justify.
@ThMntnst3 жыл бұрын
About bleed, always check everything without a patchbay to narrow it down. My patchbay was...I mean it is...the weak spot in my hardware and I'm frustrated about it. But about the Dust Collector: I really want to add this to my arsenal, but it's not easy to get one. The noisefloor it creates may be suitable to "glue" sound together (at least in some genres) in a pleasant way. Would be my "end-of-chain"-choice, if it wasn't for the mono-path.

Hey Ricky - Great review. Very interesting, particularly about the noise/crosstalk. having began recording in the days of tape, noise was always the bane and now I am slightly bemused by gear which makes a feature of it :-) Needless to say, distortion is not one of my favourite effects :-)

Desireable piece of kit, despite crosstalk and overall simplicity. Patchability is a big plus, and I like the brand of crunch of the tapehead. I run just about every track over a tube Studer before mixing, so being able to track through some more colored heads is risky by comparison.

I do the same with my 404. I put mellotron samples on it too, though, and if it loaded faster I would get more use out of it as a proper instrument. conflicted on this one.. been interested since hainbach featured it (running theme here) if you're working with a single aux send this might be pretty sick as a sole effect box (most mixer sends are mono out so no biggie on mono only imo). big knobs for easy tweaking. it's large but consider that once you chain 2-3 pedals together you're already ending up with a cablely mess anyway (at least that happens to me) i'll take one box any day. i'd rly like to see if they continue this line - love the concept but the delay & sat aren't killer enough for me to sub this for the deco that lives on my send now. would love to play with that reverb tho...
@serasera58873 жыл бұрын
Dude of course the delay distorts too much if your switch is on madness mode which gets feedback fully on. Also you doesn’t seem to get a right gain staging. This is not a plug-in, it really distorts as it should when you overdrive the inputs of analog effects. For example you overdrive the phaser on the start of the video. I have analog delays and spring Reverbs and yes they are noisy, especially if you are not careful with the noise to signal ratio.

I think all the noise and bleeding comes from one PSU for all effects. Ask a guitarist about powering a pedal-board. There is a ton of isolators and such involved if you want to have it noise-free.
